Words of thanks to a valuable friend
When Richard Maine P’09 joined The Ethel WalkerSchool Board in 2008, he served on the FiscalManagement Committee. This commitment on the partof a trustee may seem typical, but the extraordinarilypositive impact and results of his service to the Schoolare still being felt.
Under Dick’s guidance, the School received aStandard & Poors credit rating in 2009. Workbegan immediately to restructure an existing loansecured by a Letter of Credit from Allied Irish Bank. This permitted the School to lower the interest rateand secure far more advantageous terms in servicingthe loan. In light of the School’s long-term financialstrength, it’s hard to overstate the value of thiscontribution.
Dick has also worked very closely with theSchool’s Finance Office and guided the School to astandard of operating on a cash flow, break-evenbasis. His chairmanships include the AuditCommittee, the Fiscal Management Committee, and the Investment Committee.
For all his hard work, keen insight, carefulstewardship, and dedicated effort, we wish to offerthis public statement of thanks and gratitude.

When Ethel Walker startedher school one hundred yearsago, she had vision, drive andcommitment. In 2011, hervision is more relevant.Although our commitment issolid because of your generoussupport over these past years, it is even more critical today.Walker’s is so fortunate to havestrong, committed alumnae, parents and friends who support the School in continuing to seethis vision thrive…Thank you.
As we head into our next hundred years, our School is strong, stable and thriving. We have a balanced budget and a clear, concise and forward reaching strategic plan. We enjoy the full
confidence and commitment of a Board of Trustees in planningfor a sustainably thriving future, a rejuvenated alumnaepopulation, and a dedicated and committed faculty andadministration.
As we look to our future, the support of alumnae, parentsand friends to help guide us and support us is fundamental. Wecannot accomplish the goals that have been set without yoursupport. So, a very big thank you and, as we say at Walker’s,Hooray Sunray to you! Here’s to our School which has given us so much and whom we love so well!

Annual Giving Report | 2010–2011
Dear Walker’s Alumnae,Parents and Friends:
We all learned the role of thereport card early in life. We alsolearned that generally speaking, the harder we worked, the morewe had to show for our efforts. This year, it is my honor to saythat thanks to you, thedevelopment team and seniormanagement at Walker’s have a lot of great news to report, anda strong story to tell.
First, the School is on sound fiscal ground, with a balancedbudget in place. Thank you to our strong fiscal managementteam and committee for your leadership and counsel.
Second, we also have achieved the largest unrestricted AnnualFund total in our history — a total of $1,523,074.00.
Our path to this goal was assisted mid-year with our TrueColors Centennial Auction in February organized by The EthelWalker School Parents’ Association, which raised more than$70,000 for the School.
In April, the generosity of several key donors establishedAlumnae and Parent Challenges, which triggered $220,000 innew Annual Fund contributions. Their leadership set the tone forthe year and set the bar higher for us all. You — the foundationof our financial strength — did the rest.
The year 2011 is about to hits its pinnacle, as we celebrateWalker’s Centennial the weekend of September 30 – October 2.
There will be plenty of festivities and great opportunities toreconnect with Walker’s this Centennial Weekend. TheCentennial is a singular chance for everyone whose life has beentouched by this School to come together and celebrate its spirit.
So the report from the Development Office is positive.Positive about our financial state in the present, and even moreoptimistic about how we begin the journey to our Bicentennial.
Warm regards,
Pamela ChurchillDirector of Development

highest caliber,” they performed all over the world but settled
at Walker’s where they taught piano to over two hundred
students from 1950 until 1974. After leaving Walker’s, the
sisters continued to perform worldwide — still keeping in
touch with many of the students whom they had taught
during their years at the School.
After Toni’s passing, a fund was established to celebrate
and honor the two sisters. To date, $21,785 has been raised,
but an additional $3,215 is needed for the initiative to become
an endowed fund.
Please consider making a donation to establish the Rosi
and Toni Grunschlag Endowed Scholarship Fund for Piano
Students, and celebrate the past, present and future of music
at The Ethel Walker School.

The Ethel Walker Heritage SocietyFounded in 1911, The Ethel Walker School is an independent, college preparatory school
for young women in grades 6 through 12.
We believe that women’s education equals opportunity. Thisopportunity takes many forms and the result is a particularquality of education that is not found in co-educationalinstitutions. The arts, athletics, leadership opportunities, closebonds with teachers and advisors, and friendships that often lasta lifetime are all indispensable elements of a Walker’s education. In this caring setting, Walker’s girls make the journey ofdiscovery through which they develop their natural talents, findtheir unique voices and emerge as strong, confident youngwomen.
The Ethel Walker Heritage Society honors the vision andspirit of Ethel Walker, the School’s founder. Ethel Walker herselfset the example for such philanthropy by naming the School asbeneficiary in three separate trusts. Her gifts are truly gifts thatcontinue to support the institution long after her lifetime.
The Ethel Walker Heritage Society is a critical element in thecontinued endowment growth of the School as it enters itssecond century, since planned gifts will be designated for theSchool’s endowment unless the donor has a specific, alternativedesignation. As other schools have seen, endowment providescritical income for the financial stability and growth of theinstitution.
Donors to The Ethel Walker School, who make all or aportion of their gifts through their estate plans (bequest, trust, gift of life insurance, real estate, retirement account, or lifeincome agreement) will be recognized as members of The EthelWalker Heritage Society.
The Ethel Walker Heritage Society encourages all members ofWalker’s extended family to remember the School in their willsor through other planned gifts to benefit Walker’s. All those whohave made such plans need only to notify the School in writingto become a member of the Society.

“I had tried and enjoyed teaching for ten
years, and, after that, secretarial work … both
of which I found stimulating and constructive.
But the moment came when I wanted more
freedom of expression and action, and the
opportunity to create something of my own.”
“I took a chance that I might learn how to
manage a school from having one since I
learned to teach, by teaching, and secretarial
work, by doing it.”
“It was a very big gamble, because in addition
to having no experience, I had no capital, and
I found it difficult to interest anyone in such a
visionary project.”
