Pollutants Produced by an Engine

Pollutants Produced by an Engine

• Modern computer controlled automotive engines control the amount of fuel they burn by keeping the air-to-fuel ratio as close to the calculated ideal ratio of air to fuel (stoichiometric point) as possible. Theoretically, at this ratio, all of the fuel will be burned using all of the oxygen in the air. For gasoline the stoichiometric ratio is about 14.7:1, meaning that for each pound of gasoline, 14.7 pounds of air will be burned. The fuel mixture actually varies from the ideal ratio quite a bit during driving. Sometimes the mixture can be lean (an air-to-fuel ratio higher than 14.7), and other times the mixture can be rich (an air-to-fuel ratio lower than 14.7).

• The main emissions of a car engine are: • Nitrogen gas N2 Air is 78-percent nitrogen gas, and most of this passes right

through the car engine. • Carbon dioxide CO2 This is one product of combustion. The carbon in the fuel

bonds with the oxygen in the air. • Water vapor H2O This is another product of combustion. The hydrogen in the

fuel bonds with the oxygen in the air. • These emissions are mostly benign (although carbon dioxide emissions are believed to

contribute to global warming).

• Because the combustion process is never perfect, some smaller amounts of more harmful emissions are also produced in car engines:

• Carbon monoxide CO a poisonous gas that is colorless and odorless • Hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds VOCs produced mostly from

unburned fuel that evaporates. Sunlight breaks these down to form oxidants, which react with oxides of nitrogen to cause ground level ozone O3, a major component of smog.

• Nitrogen oxides NO and NO2, together called NOx contributes to smog and acid rain, and also causes irritation to human mucus membranes

OverviewOverview• Even before the Industrial Revolution began in the mid-18th Century in England, man has

been adding harmful gases into the environment as by-products from his use of fossil fuels. Since then, efforts have been made to improve efficiency in the use of these fuels to improve profitability, but emissions keep rising. Only in recent years did most governments in the developed world listen to concerned groups and start addressing laws to regulate industry to reduce the ever-increasing harmful emissions. Large corporations are now taking steps to combine with government and regulatory bodies to effect this change. Can we at Global Emissions Systems make a difference? We believe we can. Virtually any fossil fuel should produce exhausts that we can treat to substantially reduce emissions. This includes and may not be limited to gasoline, propane, natural gas, aviation fuel, butane, synthetic gas from garbage, methane from land fills, coal seam gas. Diesel and alcohol. Global Emissions Systems Inc. was created in 1998 when Eric Latino, owner of Redline Automotive, an Ontario Drive Clean testing facility and Ron Krentz, chemist, discovered that altering the combination of certain precious metals in catalytic converters drastically changed emission levels. After five years of privately funded research, they developed the chemical formula to exceed 98% reduction of engine emission from gasoline, propane, natural gas, aviation fuel, butane,

synthetic gas from garbage and methane from land fills. “Dry Selective Catalyst™ DSC™” was born with great potential to exceed 98% emissions reduction on seam gas and diesel.

• Global Emissions Systems Inc is managed, directed and owned by successful entrepreneurs, professional engineers and scientists. We have a mission and moral obligation to make the air we breath cleaner for us and our descendants.  Each GESis ™ installation will virtually eliminate harmful emissions from any fossil fuel exhaust.  We all know the air we breath can be made better and are dedicated to making it a reality. The Primary MarketThe Primary Market

• Increasing demand for electric power and fundamental changes in the structure of the electric utility industry are driving an increase in relatively small, natural gas and diesel driven generation.

• Many large industrial complexes are now providing generator back up to help insure a stable power supply in the face of increased demand for utility-generated power. This has occurred because most commercial facilities are charged a higher rate during hours of peak energy use, based on their local utility's time-of-use rates or capacity constraints. This peak demand charge is incurred monthly, based on the highest peak usage rate of the facility, even if it's only for a few hours. In certain areas and for certain facilities, peak demand charges can make up most of the electric bill.

• Strategically controlling these peak demand charges by “peak shaving” using back up generators can lead to significant cost savings.

Market DriversMarket Drivers• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has

adopted a comprehensive program that is expected to reduce emissions from future non road diesel engines by integrating engine and fuel controls as a system to gain the greatest emission reductions. To meet the new emission standards, engine manufacturers will need to produce new engines that use advanced emission-control technologies. Because some emission-control devices can be damaged by sulfur, EPA also adopted a limit to decrease the allowable level of sulfur in non road diesel fuel by more than 99 percent.

• EPA estimates that affected non-road diesel engines currently account for about 60 percent of total diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions and about 30 percent of total nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from mobile sources in the U.S. The new non-road diesel emission standards will reduce emissions by more than 90 percent.

A Recent Case StudyA Recent Case Study

• A municipality fleet of 300 gasoline based automobiles, trucks, lawn mowers, tractors and small utility vehicles would save over one ton of emissions per vehicle per year by retro fitting each unit. This is a total reduction of 279 tons of emissions per year which exceeds Koyoto targets.

• The first "Dry Selective Catalyst" DSC (TM) was installed on a local municipality vehicle this month and certified at an Ontario Drive Clean facility.

• Eric Latino, President of Redline Firestone on Sheppard and his Ontario certified drive clean staff report:

“Our first test performed on the Astro van with the stock converter on our Ontario Drive Clean approved analyzer showed that the NOx level at the beginning of the test started at 358 ppm and it took about 60 sec to reach light off which lowered the level to 102 ppm.  After installing the Global DSC™ unit we ran the same tests. The NOx level at the beginning of the test was at 12ppm, after 9 seconds the level dropped to 1ppm for the run of the test. Imagine how much would be saved every time a vehicles starts up in Ontario.”

• The drive clean test results on the 2002 Astro Van were:

CO 0 %, NOx 6 PPM, HC 9 PPM • After translation to grams. This amounts to approximately 1.64

Tonnes reduction in emissions on an annual basis over the existing factory Catalytic converter. (Based on 15,000 kilometers of annual driving)

Time Tested FeaturesTime Tested FeaturesFeatures offered by GESi, having the patented, advanced “Dry Selective Catalyst™ (DSC™)” emission reduction design: ♦ Scalable: GESi ™ vessel solutions are precision engineered, scaled up or down to meet the requirements size and scope of the exhaust project. Certain applications require special sizing due to pressure drop, especially if the hot exhaust gases are to be used to heat something downstream, i.e. energy or heat recovery or co-gen application. ♦ Adaptable: Various chemistries can be used inside the GESI to achieve specific emission results. Example: Greenhouse installations may want to recover CO2 to enhance plant growth at night time. ♦ Diversified: Multiple banks of chemistry can be added inside as well as air injection, if the application warrants it for special cases; different fuels burned may have different problems to solve. ♦ Longevity: All stainless steel construction for longevity. ♦ Certification: Pressure & Sample Point fittings are available for proof of performance tests. ♦ Rebuild-able: Industrial Sized units are rebuild-able and serviceable due to the large, bolted flange that passes around the middle section, thus creating a top and bottom half. Although the GESI unit may be positioned before or after a muffler, the unit on its own gives some muffling characteristics. Extra baffles could be added internally if an all-in-one system was desired. ♦ Recyclable: All GESis ™ devices can be recycled; with precious metal recovery core value up to 20% of original cost. ♦ Simple Installation: Easy to install; flanges can be fitted to our GESI unit plus the consolidated exhaust piping. For larger units a support structures are provided, taking the load off the exhaust piping.
