Thank You Table of Contents

We are deeply grateful to our many alumni, friends, students, mentors, staff and board members that generously supported the Thomas Edison State College Foundation during 2012. While gifts vary in size, all gifts are significant and help build a strong platform for the College’s initiatives.

Ways to GiveThere are many ways to make your tax-deductible contribution to the Thomas Edison State College Foundation.

Make an Immediate ImpactCash gifts – the simplest and easiest gifts you can make – support vital areas of funding within the College. Corporate matching gift programs help to bolster your philanthropic intent by doubling or tripling the impact of your gift. Your donation, whether it is a one-time gift, a recurring gift or a matching gift, plays an integral role in helping to support the greatest needs of the College and our students. To make your gift today or to learn if your company matches gifts, visit alumni.tesc.edu/giving.

Grow Your Contribution Over TimeGift pledges are formal statements of intention to make a gift over a period of time. Each payment on a pledge is eligible for an income tax deduction. Gift pledges are often used when supporting an endowed gift – a gift that is invested and generates income for the Foundation in perpetuity. Endowed gifts can be established with a minimum donation of $25,000 and can be directed to scholarships or special programs at the College.

Create a Lasting Legacy Planned gifts encompass a broad range of both short- and long-term gift options designed to offer a way to support the College’s mission for generations while meeting your current financial needs. In the short term, donating gifts of appreciated securities, stocks and bonds provide immediate tax advantage. In the long term, naming Thomas Edison State College Foundation as a beneficiary in your will, insurance policy or retirement account ensures financial resources for the College while alleviating the tax burden on your family. For more information about making a planned gift see Page 19 or contact Misty Isak at [email protected] or (609) 984-1588, ext. 2077.

Dear Alumni, Students and Friends,

On behalf of the Thomas Edison State College Foundation, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who provided financial support this year. I am honored to present Foundation’s inaugural Donor Report, which includes our annual Honor Roll of Donors.

Thomas Edison State College recently launched an exciting new five-year strategic plan that builds on the College’s success in providing high-quality, accessible and affordable education opportunities for self-directed adults. The plan focuses on academic excellence and responsiveness in the global marketplace, sustainability through enrollment growth and the use of emerging technologies to serve our students. The new programs described in this plan significantly enhance the College’s ability to provide pathways for students to reclaim the American dream.

The mission of the Foundation is to support the College by investing in these new programs with your gifts and other contributions. Your donations provided funding for the nursing simulator laboratory that is now being used by nursing students to learn how to respond to crisis situations in a safe environment using interactive methods. It was with your support that the Foundation also provided the funds to develop the new accelerated, online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program that launched this past year.

Your past support empowered the College and the Foundation to remain strong. With your continuing generosity, we hope to do even more. Because the College supports its own operating costs, your donations to the Foundation are able to have the greatest impact by funding the development of new programs and other advancements that directly impact students. This year, your support made it possible for the Foundation to fund the development of new innovative competency-based degree options. The College now has the resources to develop full degree programs that could be earned entirely through the assessment of competency. The College continues to actively pursue the latest and most effective means of assessment and education at a time when our nation has been called to respond to the needs of adult learners.

Thomas Edison State College has embraced the vision of empowering its students to achieve their potential and strengthen the nation’s workforce. Together, we are building a stronger future for our students and the communities in which they will live and work. Thanks again for your support for this vital mission.

Sincerely,

Brian T. Maloney Chair, Thomas Edison State College Foundation

The College launched an accelerated, online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in October 2012 with an inaugural cohort of 10 students. The career-focused program can be completed in 18 months and offers four areas of study, including Data Analytics, Finance, Healthcare Management and Marketing.

“We’ve created a program that enables our students to apply what they learn directly to their careers and professions,” said Dr. Michael Williams, acting dean of the School of Business and Technology. “Our program is designed exclusively for working adults and the applied approach distinguishes our MBA from others in the marketplace, which are mostly theory-based.”

In 2011, the Foundation provided $100,000 to fund development of the MBA.

Courses in the 39-credit program are eight-weeks long and students can enroll at three times during the year. Currently, 38 students are enrolled in the MBA program and 91 candidates have applied to the program, including eight who are enrolled in undergraduate courses required to satisfy the program’s prerequisites in financial accounting, economics and statistics.

Additionally, the School of Business and Technology has developed and launched the MBA Preparatory Program, which is designed for candidates with a nonbusiness background. This noncredit, online program enables students to complete up to three accelerated noncredit courses in 12 weeks to satisfy the program’s prerequisites. The preparatory program was deployed in April and included 12 students in its first cohort.

Competency-based education is becoming increasingly significant as a means to address the challenges of higher education access, affordability and declining degree completion rates. In an effort to create new ways for students to demonstrate learning acquired outside the classroom while earning credit applicable to their degree programs, the Thomas Edison State College Foundation invested $100,000 to fund the development of competency-based degree programs that leverage massive open online courses (MOOC).

“We are grateful for the Foundation’s support and excited to create new opportunities for adult learners that combine our expertise in assessment and the rapid increase of online learning opportunities,” said Marc Singer, vice provost of the College’s Center for the Assessment of Learning.

Open courses, often free and not for credit, are offered by consortiums that include the leading universities in the U.S., such as Harvard, Princeton and Stanford. With a competency-based approach, the focus is on increasing the range of options available to students through which they could attain the educational outcomes expected for the degree they seek.

The College will use the Foundation grant to build competency-based degree options by creating assessments for learning outcomes, evaluating the state of available open courseware and associated materials, and developing e-portfolio templates. The development of these options will enable the College to offer a full range of student-centered approaches to degree attainment, emphasizing speed, workforce-ready skills, convenience, flexibility, affordability and validation of a student’s existing knowledge.

Foundation Funds Develop MOOC Competency-Based Degree Programs

“We will provide students who complete these open courses the opportunity to earn credit and apply that credit to our degree programs. This creates new pathways that enable students to demonstrate the learning they acquire in open courses while our expertise in assessing learning that occurs outside a college setting enables the College to maintain its standards of academic excellence.” Marc Singer Vice Provost Center for the Assessment of Learning

“As a Thomas Edison State College graduate, I believe that adult students value education more because we have a better understanding and appreciation of the cost and financial commitment. Scholarship support of nontraditional students seeking to advance their education is essential. As one of those students, the George A. Pruitt Scholarship Fund provided support which allowed me to focus on my studies and reduced some of the financial burden on my family.”

Audrey Cooper, MSHRM ’13

“As a mentor, I contribute because I believe the education Thomas Edison

State College provides is key in allowing its students to learn the facts and critical thinking skills needed for everyday life. ”

Human Patient Simulator Laboratory

With Phase I of the Sim Lab’s development now complete, the next phase can begin; that is, to virtualize the Sim Lab curriculum for use by the School’s RN-BSN and RN-BSN/MSN students. Donor support of this initiative positions Thomas Edison State College as a leader in nursing education in the state of New Jersey.

“The W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing is training our future healthcare professionals to deliver critically needed, first-rate care. We are proud to support the School’s Human Patient Simulator Laboratory

that will help students advance their skills and further ensure the long-term health of our communities in New Jersey and beyond.”

Linda Bowden PNC Bank New Jersey regional president

The Human Patient Simulator Laboratory (Sim Lab) is a transformative idea in nursing education and is now an exciting reality for the students enrolled in the W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing’s Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN program at Thomas Edison State College. Utilizing high fidelity simulators and state-of-the-art digital technology, the Sim Lab is designed to help students learn, practice and become exceptionally competent in vital assessment, diagnostic and clinical skills. In conjunction with the School’s innovative curriculum, the Sim Lab will also assist students in developing optimum critical thinking, decision-making and teamwork abilities in a safe and controlled environment without fear of doing harm to real patients.

“I’m so proud to be both an employee and alumna of Thomas Edison State College. The opportunity to complete my master’s degree at Thomas Edison gave me a first-hand look at the quality of our educational programs. I feel that my contribution to the Foundation helps to strengthen the College experience for all students, and allows the institution to grow and flourish. I feel that one student educated at Thomas Edison State College has the potential to influence the lives of thousands of others. I’m happy to be a part of that phenomenon.”

Charlene Martucci, MSM ’09 College Employee

Planned gifts, such as bequests and life income, can be an advantageous way to provide future support to a charity. You can take care of yourself and take care of Thomas Edison State College. The Foundation welcomes gifts made through different planned giving arrangements. These arrangements can:

• Provide for you or your loved ones

• Entitle you to charitable gift or estate tax deductions

• Fulfill philanthropic goals

• Increase spendable income

• Enable you to leave a legacy for Thomas Edison State College

Choosing the right planned gift depends on your personal circumstances and financial goals.

Bequest and Estate Planning

You may make a bequest or gift through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming Thomas Edison State College Foundation as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. The amount left to the Foundation (or any charity) can be expressed as a dollar amount or as a percentage of the assets to be given.

Life Income Gifts

A life income gift allows you to give assets to Thomas Edison State College Foundation while providing yourself or others with income for a period of time before the Foundation is permitted to use your gift. You may make a life income gift by transferring securities, cash or other property to the Foundation. The Foundation then manages the investment of the assets and pays an income to you, your designated beneficiaries or both.

For more information about planned giving opportunities that benefit Thomas Edison State College, contact Misty Isak at [email protected] or (609) 984-1588, ext. 2077.

Foundation Board of Directors (as of Dec. 31, 2012)Board of TrusteesPaula Vaughan BSBA ’90, MSM ’98 For Paula Vaughan, giving back is an ingrained behavior.

Vaughan, who completed a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1990 and a Master of Science in Management in 1998, said she always felt a lingering need to finish college to satisfy her own sense of accomplishment.

“For me, earning the bachelor’s degree was a personal milestone,” said Vaughan. “By the time I completed my master’s degree, it was clearly to help address the changing work environment and to have credentials that would serve me in any future position. My gratitude to the College continuously evolved to my participation in the Alumni Association and becoming a donor.”

Vaughan, a Prudential retiree and long-time donor to the College, was able to increase her support of the College through the generous matching gift program offered by her former employer.

Today, a scholarship endowment at Thomas Edison State College bears her name with a portion of the contributions she makes matched by Prudential.

“When I was approached about considering a scholarship endowment, it just felt right to move to donating through the institution to deserving individuals who qualify for the [Paula Vaughan Scholarship] Endowment Fund to help adult learners achieve their goals. I give to the College because it was the most viable solution for completion of my education, and I want TESC to continue to be accessible for other adults like me. This is my ‘paying it forward’.”
