YEAR OF MERCY

Happy Labor Day to each of you!

I pray that you are able to relax and take it easy from your daily jobs and earthly duties that God calls each

of us to. Labor Day is about more than backyard cookouts, days off of work and school, and the last day for the outdoor pools to be open. Labor Day originated in the US as a day to honor and celebrate the spirit of the labor and trade organizations as well as the workers and their families. This day is a good day for all of us to be thankful for our jobs and for the work that God calls each of us to.

While this is certainly a day of rest from our physical, earthly jobs; we should never take a break from our spiritual duties. Saint Paul writes about the reasons for which he labors and struggles, it is not for himself, but rather for others. Saint Paul says the reason for which he labors is to proclaim Christ to all, to teach them His ways and His word, so that one day with God’s grace everyone may be presented perfect in Christ. Saint Paul labored and struggled in order to build up the people of God, to grow, nurture and help those who were in need of God’s love. Saint Paul labored to bring Christ to everyone he could, we too would do well to follow his example.

While we may rest today, let us never rest from spreading the good news and from bringing Christ to all those that we are called to.

Father above, we thank you and praise you for the gift of this day. Lord, thank you for our jobs and for the work that you are calling us to now. Lord help guide us and strengthen us in this world, so that we may be

your perfect servants at all times. Lord, all good things come from you, and we pray that you will help make us good lights in this world and that we may help share your good news with all those that we can. We pray for all those who are unemployed and for all those searching for jobs. We ask this all through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

¿La Dignidad del Trabajo o del Trabajador?

Todo trabajo es digno e importante porque es realizado por una persona humana. La dignidad del trabajo no reside en el tipo de trabajo que uno realiza sino en la persona humana que lo realiza. Por ello, es la persona humana que confiere dignidad a cualquier trabajo y es el trabajador que hace digno el trabajo.

Además, todo trabajo es importante porque si falla alguien se refleja en el conjunto. Es como una

cadena donde todos los anillos son importantes ya que al fallar uno se rompe todo. La toma de decisiones, la limpieza, la acogida a la entrada, el papeleo ordenado forma un todo y como un todo dan una buena o mala impresión e influyen directamente sobre la eficiencia del trabajo.

A veces se confunde lo importante con la responsabilidad. Toda persona es importante simplemente porque es un ser humano, pero, evidentemente, en el trabajo algunos tienen más responsabilidad que otros. También se suele confundir lo importante con lo público. Algunos tienen un trabajo público, pero esto no les hace más importantes que otros. Basta preguntarle a un niño quien es

más importante para el: ¿un personaje público o sus propios padres?

Esta visión que comprende la realidad a partir de la dignidad de lo humano se rompe en una sociedad clasista y racista, ya que en este caso se otorga una superioridad a un grupo social o a una raza, con la correspondiente asignación social de tipo de trabajo. Y no se aprecia lo humano por ser humano sino por lo que pueda tener (características, poder dinero, vestidos, etc.) Además, en este caso, tampoco se aprecia la habilidad personal sino simplemente la pertenencia social o racial. Resulta increíble y totalmente anacrónica esta mirada discriminatoria que es incapaz de apreciar lo humano simplemente por ser humano,

es decir, de reconocer el “ser persona” por encima delo tener cosas”.

En la dinámica de la rutina cotidiana en el ambiente laboral, uno tiende a olvidarse que detrás de cada trabajo hay una persona humana, concreta y real. Por cierto, existen no solo derechos sino también deberes en el trabajo, pero jamás debería arrojarse la vida de un trabajador a la arena del mercado como si fuera un elemento más entre otros tantos.
