Business meetings are held the first Tues. after the first Wed. 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. of each

month at Marysville School Service Center, 4220 80th St NE Marysville.

Next meeting will be the annual dinner meeting April 9, 2018.

activities necessary to run our member organization. If you haven’t attended a

meeting, please come and share your ideas!!!

Hello Happy Hoppers,

The past several weeks have not been kind to our club. Rod Davidson, the

Happy Hopper President for the past three years, experienced some health

issues over the winter. Rod’s health took a downward turn in February, and he

passed away on March 1st. Rod was a great ambassador for square dancing

and greatly contributed to the continued success of our club. We all wish

Bertha well during this trying time.

Also in February we had to cancel one dance, cancel one lesson and reschedule

another lesson. And most other clubs had to cancel dances as we all sat home

and watched the snow continue to come down. February was not a good month

for square dancing in this region.

But spring is quickly approaching and it is time to get back to normal activities,

including square dancing. All the clubs are back to normal schedules with

dances as listed in the Council Notes. And now is the time to look into

destination dances for this summer. There is the State Festival in June. The

Circle 8 campground near CleElum has Mainstream dance weekends in May

and August and the Education & Leadership Seminar in July. Then we have

the Winthrop Barn Dance in September. If you have questions about any of

these, please talk to any of the club officers or other member that has been to

some of these destinations.

See you in a square soon!

Wanted: Creative, crafty person to prepare a tri-fold poster board for the No-Experience dances

being sponsored by the Mount Baker Council each January and August. The board should tell and

show Happy Hoppers having a good time at dances and perhaps other activities, plus provide

information on our upcoming lessons. The volunteer could use what

other clubs have done as a guide. Our club will pay for materials.

Please contact Eric or Cindy if interested.

Wanted: Happy Hoppers representative to the Recruitment

and Retention Task Force. This Mount Baker Council task force

meets one Sunday a month in the early afternoon at the Marysville

Library (close to most of us). Their objective is to develop activities and programs for getting more

people into lessons, and keeping new graduates and others dancing. Please contact Eric or Cindy if

interested.

Wanted: Members to scan the Happy Hopper scrapbooks from years past so we can store the

important parts of our club history digitally. The goal is to get all our relevant history on-line so we

can dispose of the hard copies. The more people we have doing this, the easier the job will be. We

would greatly appreciate a volunteer to lead this project. Please contact Eric or Cindy if interested.

Wanted: Happy Hopper representative(s) to the Mount Baker Council for the 2019-2020 season

(September thru June). Two positions available. Volunteer(s) would attend the Council meeting in

Marysville on the first Wednesday of each month, and summarize the meeting at the HH meeting the

next Tuesday. Collect dance flyers from other clubs and distribute dance flyers to clubs at the

meeting. Training will be provided. Please contact Eric or Cindy if interested.

Wanted: Happy Hopper Newsletter Editor for the 2019- 2020 dance season.

Editor Note: Best way to volunteer, be active in the Club, make friends, know who club members

are, learn the process of keeping the club functioning/active is to come to the Business meetings.

Happy Hoppers have their club meetings monthly ~~ first Tuesday after the first Wednesday. (The Mt.

Baker Council has their meeting the first Wednesday each month) and then the Hoppers meetings

follow the Tuesday following.

Responsibilities/Duties of a Club Member

1. Be socially clean, courteous and pleasant.

2. NO drinking of alcoholic beverages before or during the

dance.

3. Arrive at the dance early and be ready to dance the first tip.

4. Introduce yourself to visitors and guests – make them feel

square dancer is a friend you haven’t met.

5. Share dance time – don’t be exclusive – no cliques.

6. Accept help from others and be helpful to others.

7. Know and adhere to your dance level.

8. Form your squares promptly, and welcome anyone who joins the set. Introduce yourself before the

tip starts.

fellowship at the dance.

10. Contribute toward the enjoyment of the dance by expressing friendliness, good humor, cooperation

and a real desire to have fun.

11. Guide your partner – do not shove, push or jerk.

12. Stay for the entire dance if possible – dance the last tip.

13. Be courteous to speakers, leaders and callers. Be a good listener. Listen attentively to the Club

announcements.

14. Wear proper square dance attire and badge at all Club functions.

15. End each tip with a flourish, applause and thanks to all in the square – and mean it.

16. Thank everyone who made your evening a pleasant one – the Caller, Cuer, Club leaders, Guest, etc.

Your “thanks” is their pay.

17. Attend and participate in workshops to learn new calls and to improve your dancing abilities.

18. Participate in all club visitations, exhibitions, charity activities and other functions.

19. Know your leaders and the relationships of your caller to the club.

20. Talk to the caller and Club leaders about your dance problems and desires for the club.

22. Serve in positions of responsibility – its your duty to help. It is Your club and surely you want the best.

23. Recruit and assist new dancers (Angels).

24. Be financially responsible – pay Club dues in advance without being asked.

The Happy Hoppers had a successful caravan to the 2016 dance and “The Boot” was handed over to the Rainbow Squares while the Hoppers finally got the “Golden Horseshoes” for the club who had the most members registered. The club also received a 10 lb. bar of chocolate given by Sheri’s Sweet Shop in Winthrop who was the sponsor of the dance. So thank you to all the Hoppers who attended/pre-registered this year!!

The Hoppers had the boot for five years so we were celebrating!!

Rod Davidson with the Golden Horsehoes award 2016

Rod was so proud of the Happy Hoppers!!

Hello Fellow Dancers,

If you plan on going to the Winthrop Barn Dance this September, now is the time to arrange your accommodations (see attached flyer/registration form). Hotels, KOA Camping Cabins and other lodging fill up early, so you should reserve your room soon. For you RVers and campers, we encourage you to join us at the Winthrop KOA.

Jean Raymond of our Happy Hoppers reserves campsites together for club members and their friends. If you want to camp with our group, please let Jean Raymond (360-568-1176) know. She will need to know what type of site you want (full hook-up, tent site, etc.) and if you have an RV, whether it is a motorhome or trailer, how long it is and if it has slides whether they are on one side or both sides. Everyone is welcome to join us for a Happy Hopper campfire at the KOA Saturday night after the evening dance.

And for those of you that haven't been to this dance in the past, please note that there is a friendly competition between several of the local square dance clubs to see which club has the most pre-registered participants at the dance. The prize is a 10-lb. chocolate bar provided by the dance sponsor, Sheri's Sweet Shop, and bragging rights for the next year! So, it is important that you also complete the registration form and send it in prior to Sept. 1, which is the cutoff for counting the club participation. The Happy Hoppers missed winning the first prize last year by just 1 person. The Samena Squares managed to win (again!). Let's see if we can get more participants this year! Please let us know if you have any questions. This is one of our most favorite destination square dances and we hope you will join us! Hugs, Eric & Cindy

The club requires dues from the members for the next dance season. We need $25 each year from each member who wants to continue to be in the club. Of that, $6 goes to the Mount Baker Council and State Federation. Please note that our new graduating students that are joining our club as of February 11, 2019 have already paid their dues for this upcoming 2019/2020 year. For the

rest of us, please submit $25 per person by cash or check (made out to Happy Hoppers) to Eric or Cindy by March 1. Thank you!
