Business meetings are held the first Tues. after the first Wed. 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. of each month at

Cedarcrest Middle School, 6400 88th Street NE, Marysville. Next meeting will be January 10, 2017.

Happy Hoppers are a member organization and all members are welcome to attend meetings and

be on the board, volunteer as committee chairs or participate in the activities necessary to run our

member organization. If you haven’t attended a meeting, please come and share your ideas!!!

Ila Williams Award

Again it is time for all our square & round dance friends within Mt. Baker Council to be thinking about

who you would like to see selected as the recipient of the Ila Williams Award for this year. This award is

to honor a dancer (individual, couple, caller or cuer) within our Council area who has done an

outstanding job of promoting square, round, clog or contra dancing.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ~~Happy Hoppers Student Appreciation Day

Last Sunday (December 4), the Happy Hoppers held the third annual Student Appreciation Day party for our students. About 14 students and more than 40 Hoppers attended and a great time was had by all. The dedication and support of many Hoppers was essential in making the day well organized, fun, and exciting! I want to thank Ron and Sharon James for arranging for the free use of their clubhouse, setting up the facility for the party, providing the punch and other beverages, providing the plates and napkins, and for cleaning up afterwards! And many thanks to Eric and Cindy Selby for collecting, storing and sorting the free square dance clothing for the students (and some Hoppers) for the event. Eric and Cindy also donated a basket of barbecue items they won at the MBC Dance for a door prize (won by Jean Raymond). Thanks to all the Hopper Club members who donated their gently used clothing to get the students started on their square dancing wardrobe. And the students really appreciated the Hoppers who hung the clothes on the racks and provided guidance as to the proper size and style to create outfits for them to wear. The potluck food was delicious, and most of it was gone by the end of the party. Thanks to Tinamarie who organized the Hoppers so that a wide type and variety of food was available and thanks to all the Hoppers who brought the wonderful food for everyone to enjoy. And thanks to Frank for cutting up the chocolate we won in Winthrop into nice bite-sized pieces for all to share. What a fitting end to a delicious prize! And it gave me an opportunity to show the students what an awesome club we have, and what fun it can be to travel outside of our council area. Lastly, thanks to all the Hoppers who brought in games to play and who socialized with the students. I think everyone had a really fun time playing the games and chatting with each other. Here are a couple of comments we received in the comment box at the lessons Monday evening: "Enjoyed the party, friendly people, lots of good food". "Party was great! Wish we could do it again soon! Cannot wait to be an official member". "I think everyone in the club I have met is great. Cindy and Eric are so efficient and conscientious!" The lifeblood of our club is an infusion of new members who are excited and enthusiastic to be a part of our awesome organization! By holding this Appreciation Party and letting them see us as the warm, friendly club that we are will go a long way to attracting them as official Happy Hopper Club members. Our continuing support on their journey to becoming qualified Mainstream dancers, will not only help them experience the fun of square dancing, but will hopefully convince them to become full-time members of our club.

A note from Bertha: When Mark and Bernadine (students) won the 50/50 at our level dance

November 19 Mark immediately donated back his $50 winnings to the Food Bank Drive. That’s

the kind of great people joining the Happy Hoppers!!

Happy Hopper Class Coordinator Report Dec. 13, 2016 Our student headcount is now 21 (2 of our couples and 1 single had to drop but asked to remain on our contact list for lessons next year). The breakdown of students, angels & money collected each class: Nov. 14: 20 students, 29 angels, 6 squares ($66 cash) Nov. 21: 18 students, 28 angels, 5 squares ($54 cash) Nov. 28: 19 students, 24 angels, 5 squares ($54 cash) Dec. 5: 18 students, 22 angels, 5 squares ($60 cash) Dec. 12: 17 students, 24 angels, 5 squares ($54 cash) The Fern Bluff “Turkey Lurkey” dance had 9 HH students and 14 HH angels and Kataryna won the drawing for a free turkey. And Deb and Norm and Chris and Carol scored big on the brown bag auction – congratulations to all that participated! Our Happy Hopper “Black & White” student dance had a great turnout – 17 HH students participated and there were 12 squares total. Kevin T. was in great form and had everyone smiling. Mark and Bernadine won the split the pot. The Mt. Baker Singles & Skagit Squares student dance on Nov. 22 had 9 HH students and 7 HH angels and 6 squares. And the Stanwood Sashayers dance had 10 HH students and 7 HH angels and 6 squares and we got a banner! Dave Harry’s Friday Fun Fest on Dec. 2 had 12 HH students and lots of angels. The Dec. 9 Samena Squares dance had 3 HH students and 9 HH angels. And the Dec. 10 Rainbow Squares student dance had 4 HH students and 8 HH angels. Upcoming student level dances include the Dec. 17 Skagit Squares “Santa’s Workshop” with John Corrigan at the Mount Vernon Senior Center, the Dec. 27 “Tweener” dance at the Mount Vernon Senior Center with Dave Harry and the Jan. 6 Friday Funfest at The Hayloft. The Hoppers have a student dance on Jan. 7 – Gary Monday’s “Crazy Hat Dance”. We only have a few lessons to go. The schedule is as follows: Dec. 19–regular lesson with cookie exchange, no class Dec. 26 and Jan. 2. Regular lessons resume on Jan. 9, no class Jan. 14 and regular lesson & graduation on Jan. 23. Thanks to all the angels that have been helping out with lessons and at the student dances – we have several students that have indicated they plan to join our club after graduation. An Anonymous Letter from a guy named “Santa”

I’m doing my homework while I sit here at the North Pole. I have noticed some ever so friendly episodes

at Hopper dances. Like everyone pitching in to get the show for the night rolling and cleaning

Toys for up……….so impressed…………and then, the many generous gifts donated to

Tots, and the food bank!!! And, not a Santa thing, but noticed that very few people were ever left sitting alone

thanks to friendly people.

Makes me feel good………Santa Claus
