Dr. Govilkar presented his thoughtsstating the background of demonetisation wherein Reserve Bank had served a notice toall banks to increase currency of 100 Rs denomination on 5th May. Thereafter on November2nd, once again Reserve Bank issued a notice to the banks to increase the 100 Rs currencyin the ATM machine. decision by PM Narendra Modi nor was it a sudden decision, expounded Dr. Govilkar; healso stated that it is not the first or last of its kind.

The Government was fully equipped before implementing demonetisation, said Dr. Govilkar, adding further, efforts were made through Jan-Dhan Scheme to encourage opening ofthe bank accounts. In all 15 crore citizens opened the accounts. Thus awareness aboutbanking was created. One can see the benefits of it after the decision of demonetisation.

Anil Shinde, of Arthakranti Pratishthan stated that the money which has come intocirculation due to decision of demonetisation would be used in the rural sector as is hintedby our PM. This will result in diverting the funds to the rural population through variousGovernment Schemes. It would also help to bridge the gap between rich and poor, theurban developed and the rural underprivileged, and said the nation would go a step aheadin terms of cashless transactions. Hence he predicted that the Rs 2000 notes may not goout of circulation.

Ashish Shah stated that this decision would help to reduce the inflation and commonpeople will get a solace. Since the interest rates are reduced, it is advisable to avoid theinvestments in F. D.s. and that instead investments like mutual funds would be beneficial, said Mr. Shah.

However, the exquisite topography, peculiar socio-cultural nature of thebelt with unique history and recent economic developments makes it important to understandthe strengths and vulnerabilities of the region. The particular objective was to trace downthe challenges faced by the local populace and security forces along the border belt. Also, the study attempted to understand the development aspirations of the region. Theprime objective of such a study is to bring forth the stories and issues from remote borderareas to the mainland, so as to include their concerns in the mainstream awareness andstrengthen the integrity of the nation.

42 villages spread across the four border districts - Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaiselmer andBarmer in Rajasthan were visited and relevant stakeholders in state administration, bordersecurity forces and other agencies operating were interviewed to meet the objectives ofthe study.
