From Watercolor to Quilt Class 405

Friday, Saturday, Sunday October 3, 4, 5

9:30am - 4:30pm $150 + tax

Abstract watercolor paintings will be created the first day using 10 different painting techniques that will leave the student with several paintings to work from. Techniques include: transparent layered shapes, tape resists, rubber cement drawing resist, washes, glazing, dropping in of colors, surface treatments using soap bubbles, rubbing alcohol and grids, etc. One painting will be chosen and cropped to find the most dynamic part. This will be drawn to make templates, then enlarged, and translated with fabrics into a quilt using either my turned edge technique or the students preferred technique. When the quilt is done it will look like a watercolor painting.

No painting experience is needed.

Virginia Walton

Vickie Haskins became an employee of Ann Silva’s Sewing Center in 2007 to teach Mastery Classes. A week after she started Virginia Keys the Handi Quilter instructor decided to move to Montana. Vickie was “promoted” to Handi Quilter instructor instantly. She expanded the long-arm classes from just the “How to Use This New Machine” to cover a wide variety of topics. She boasts she can teach anyone to draw feathers and “if you can draw it, you can sew it.” In February, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History opened a new permanent exhibit, The Hall of Stars, featuring work done by Vickie on her Handi Quilter using the Art and Stitch software. It is an interactive exhibit displaying the night sky as seen in New Mexico. This exhibit won a national award for interactive exhibits in museums in May.

In July, Vickie became the twenty-first Certified Art and Stitch instructor in the world. This software is for computerized long-arm and embroidery machines. Vickie teaches Handi Quilter (long-arm quilting), Pro-Stitcher (computerized long-arm) and Art and Stitch classes at our store. In addition, she creates digital quilting designs and does custom quilting. 221. Art & Stitch - Quilting Wide Open Spaces Each Session: $20 + tax Tuesdays, 6 - 8:30 pm (A) September 9 (B) October 28 (C) November 25 We will be using the wonderful designs in Judi Madsen’s book as a jumping off point to digitize this quilt. This class is for Art and Stitch owners. Students must have Version 3 installed on their own computers. The demo version will not save the designs. Students must have book by Judi Madsen prior to the class to avoid copyright issues. QUILTING WIDE OPEN SPACES by Judi Madsen will be the basis for the block of the month. The quilt design that will be used is "In the Meadow" beginning on page 97. If you desire to take this class and do this project, please call and order the book now from the store. Open House is only a few days before our class. 222. PRO STITCHER Each Session: $20 + tax Thursdays, 6 - 8:30 pm (A) October 23 Let’s Learn to Make Borders. 29. Artist Color Wheel: A Mariner’s Compass One Session: $40 + tax Kate Quinn Friday, November 14 9:30am-3:30pm Learn paper piecing with freezer paper to make this fabulous color wheel design using techniques from Judy Mathiesen’s book: Mariner’s Compass Quilts: Setting a new Course. This technique has no paper to remove, patterns are reusable, and compass pieces fit together with straight seams. The center circle is appliquéd on top to complete the design. Use my color choices to mimic an artist’s color wheel or chose fabrics that speak to you. Look for good contrasts between the star rays and the background for best effect.

30. Featherweight Fanatics Project One Session: $24 + tax Lucy Greene Friday, November 14 1-4pm Many own these cute Singers. Explore what you can do with a straight stitch and all those attachments. Project will be a placemat. 31. Mosaic Stained Glass Teresa Heaphy Two Sessions: $48 + tax 9:30am to 12:30pm Tuesdays, December 2 & 9 A birch tree set in a garden is the focal point of this stained glass piece. Fabric pieces are carefully selected, positioned, and appliquéd to a black background fabric using raw edge or satin stitch. The resulting piece may be quilted or framed as art.

Christine Gist – an educator from the Bernina of America event team will be the instructor. Christine lives in Tucson Arizona, where she continues to teach and create at the local Bernina dealership.
