Cosplay or “kosupure” play in Japan was originally a Japanese term for dressing up like an anime, a video game character, a movie character, pop or rock star. The term or word is now more widely used in the United States as the activity has become popular, particularly at conventions.

The word comes from the joining of two English words “costume” and “play”.
