Thrown Out and Thrown Up
There is something fishy going on here! Can you believe that message on Sunday? I mean… is this something that you would stake your life on? Can you trust and pattern your life around such a story? There are a lot of stories in the Bible. Jesus taught by using stories. He would make up a story that helped people relate to Him and to understand His point. He told stories like the prodigal son, virgins going to a wedding, and a guy robbed and beaten on the road to Jericho. We call these parables, because they are stories with a point (most always have only one point, but some can make an 11-point message out of them). He also used illustrations like a grain of wheat falling to the ground to describe death. He is not talking about a historical event. The word picture was simply used because it helped the hearer understand what He was saying. Jesus’ listeners knew about temples, crops and thirst. Jesus also used examples that were well known to the people that came from the Old Testament. Some people say, “Well that’s Old Testament,” as if that comment alone diminishes the validity of story or passage. But if Jesus thought it was important, then I must take it into serious consideration. It impacts how we are to look at the Bible. Some are like, “I believe in Jesus, but the Bible is a different story.” The Bible is God’s Word. Jesus is the Living Word, the Bible is the Written Word. If any of the Old Testament was wrong, Jesus would have corrected it. He was the Word in the flesh (incarnate). He is the author of the O.T. and N.T. So, if you want to separate Jesus and the Bible, you are on some shaky ground. One of the stories that Jesus used was about a guy who God wanted to send on a mission. God wanted Jonah to go and preach to a group that Jonah hated. God said go this way and Jonah went the opposite direction. While running from God in a boat, a storm threatens to block his escape. He admits that this is all his fault and the crew throws him overboard. He gets swallowed by a large fish or whale which spits him out three days later on the shores of the land where God wanted Jonah to preach in the first place. He is very effective. Can you imagine meeting a guy on the road who just spent three days in the belly of a large fish? His hair and clothes are bleached, he has seaweed dangling from his hair and he smells like half-digested fish. He speaks. REPENT! …and they did (wouldn’t you?) There are many points of interest and lessons that can be learned from Jonah’s story. Jesus did not use these. Jesus uses the story as a sign of what was going to happen. He would be buried for three days and then be resurrected. Bet you did not get that from the original reading of the Story of Jonah! But the story was not there only so Jesus could use it as an illustration. It is there because it is part of God’s story (His-story/History) of His work to bring people back to Him. Can you believe it?
I do! It is not simply an illustration or parable, its history. I cannot explain how it happened. The Bible is not intended to be a biological textbook. God doesn’t explain everything. He explains what we need to know to become His people and to live as His people. Can the creator of the universe create one fish or a whole species of animals that a man can survive three days in its belly? Of course! Is your God big enough? Mine is.
I love one of the quotes from Job, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.” (Job 42:3) I live in a great, wonderful world and serve a great and wonderful God, whom I can believe!
Blessings,
Reverend Ric Harvel

Change the World Day Saturday, May 20, 2017
The Nehemiah Mission of Cleveland is sponsoring a “Change the World” event on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 8:30am to 7pm and is
looking for individuals and groups from churches, companies, service organizations and social groups interested in devoting a day to
cleaning up the “hidden” neighborhoods of Cleveland. general clean up.
Youth and Adults are invited.
We will leave the church

In April, Andover UMC Tweens joined the “Northeast Ohio Hide Painted Rocks” project.
The hidden rocks are found by strangers and began as a way to brighten the finder’s day as an act of kindness.
All the kids participating in the recent project now will see how far their rocks have traveled when picked up.
Check out “Northeast Ohio rocks” Facebook page for more information.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month.
Recently we have lost a member to a stroke as well as another has recently been severely affected by a stroke
so let’s refresh some points! Blood pressure control is a big influence on stroke prevention. Have regular check-
ups and if your doctor recommends medication for better control….TAKE IT!
The article below addresses blood pressure issues.
Do you know the acronym for spotting stroke signs?
F-A-S-T F= Face drooping. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person's smile
uneven or lopsided?
A=Arm weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift
downward?
S=Speech Difficulty. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person
to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” Is the person able to correctly repeat words?
T= Time. If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and say, “I think
this is a stroke” to help get the person to the hospital immediately. Time is important! Don’t delay
and also note the time when the first symptoms appeared. Emergency responders will want to know.
Some other associated signs are sudden confusions, sudden numbness/weakness especially one side of body, sudden trou-
ble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, or sudden severe head-
ache with no known cause.
High Blood Pressure Equals Higher Risk of Stroke.
Normal blood pressure is 120/80.
Stroke happens when a clot or rupture interrupts blood flow to the brain.
Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells die.
Most people who have a first stroke, have high blood pressure.
High blood pressure can damage blood vessels in the brain, raising the risk of clots or ruptures.
Stroke happens when a clot or rupture interrupts blood flow to the brain.
Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells die.
80% of strokes can be prevented.
Nearly 1 in 6 American adults who have high blood pressure don’t know.
At age 50, people without high blood pressure have a life expectancy 5 years longer than people with high blood
pressure.
Have your blood pressure checked and keep it in check to reduce your risk of stroke.
