GRADES (A*-C)

We hope you will find this guide helpful in exploring your options for the future, whether you are leaving school or joining us from another college. We have provided you with lots of information to help make your choice, but of course there is nothing like seeing the real thing, so we encourage you to come to our open days and find out about each course in detail and see the College for yourself.

As a college we are well respected in the local community achieving consistently high standards in our results. This was endorsed by Ofsted earlier this year who confirmed that all of our teaching is either ‘OUTSTANDING’ or ‘GOOD’. We continue to grow as more and more young people are making us their first choice when they leave school. In fact, over 600 year 10 students

have just taken part in our taster days saying they loved the enthusiasm of our teachers and the wide variety of options open to them.

We offer exceptional individual support at Andover. We’re small enough to know every student personally but big enough to provide choice and fantastic facilities. Our teachers offer a blend of enthusiasm, creativity and dedicated support, rarely found in other institutions. It’s a great place to work and a great place to learn.

So why not join us?”

WHAT ANDOVER HAS TO OFFER

TOP UNIVERSITIES

UNLOCK A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES

Our students go to over 90 universities across the country. The map below shows some of the top destinations of our recent graduates.

WE HAVE AMAZING TEACHERS

LEARN FROM THE BEST

We have a dynamic, dedicated team of teachers who are truly committed to your success. You are genuinely a name not a number at Andover College and your success is our success. Whether we are providing one-to-one tutorials or personalised projects, our staff make it their business to use innovation and creativity to stimulate learning and understanding.

We’re not just focused on passing exams but on developing independent learning and intellectual curiosity along with personal confidence and self-esteem. We help our students to develop a thirst for learning that makes achievement a natural part of the process.

A LEVEL

THINKING OF UNIVERSITY?A Levels are the gateway to most university courses and if you apply in your second year you will usually be given a ‘conditional offer’. This is an offer of a place as long as you achieve the grades required for your chosen course. For a number of degrees it is also important to demonstrate, through your personal statement, the importance of extra-curricular activities such as voluntary work, as this will show your enthusiasm and dedication for your chosen subject.

The UCAS Tariff is a means of allocating points to A Levels (or equivalent) used for entry into higher education. Not all universities or courses use the tariff points system, so if you have any questions then please contact Sharon Lythgoe, our Careers Advisor, on 01264 360006. The UCAS points are detailed below:

YOUR A LEVEL OPTIONSWith over 40 AS/A2 and A Level subjects to choose from, our Sixth Form provides you with everything you need to achieve outstanding results and is the perfect pathway to university. Our results are outstanding, with a 99.3% A*–E pass rate at A Level in 2014. Almost all of our students who applied secured a place at the university of their choice last year.

Our talented and supportive teachers will challenge you academically to help you achieve great results but will also help you develop personally so you believe in your own abilities and success. We understand the importance of good results, but also focus on your personal development, so we can genuinely prepare you for life after college.

Most subjects will require five A*-C GCSEs including Maths and English, although some subjects such as Psychology require six A*-C GCSEs. Specific entry requirements are shown on our website www.andover.ac.uk

Currently all A Level subjects comprise of an AS qualification in year one and an A2 qualification in year two (with the AS grade contributing to the overall A2 grade). However, from September 2015 there will be changes to the format and assessment of A Levels.

PRINCIPAL CHANGES:

Your AS qualification will no longer contribute to your final A Level grade. However, the AS qualification will be similar to the first year of the two-year A Level course which enables some flexibility.

The new linear A Levels are being introduced over a period of time, with some subjects being delivered in the new format from September 2015 (as indicated). From September 2016, the next phase of linear A Levels will be introduced and these are as follows: • Design and Technology • Dance, Drama and Music • Geography • Maths and Further Maths • Modern Foreign Languages • Classical Languages • Physical Education • Religious Studies

Some of you might take a mixture of A Level subjects which comprise of the new linear A Levels, as well as the current AS and A2 qualifications.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

GUIDE TO A LEVELS

In the first year of study you will choose your subjects at AS Level. AS Levels can be taken as a stand-alone qualification and are completed at the end of the first year. This year will be all about preparing you for your A2s as well as your AS examinations. Therefore, the step up to A2 will seem like a natural progression.

Some subjects are now offered as a full A Level, so examination of your knowledge and understanding learnt on the course will take place at the end of two years. A Levels are mostly assessed by written exams, although some coursework will be required. In subjects such as Art or Science your practical skills are also assessed.

After completing the AS Level year you will choose the subjects to continue with at A2 Level. You will be expected to achieve a D or higher at AS for each subject. You may also get the option of studying another AS subject in your second year. You will complete the AS after your second year of study.Teachers assess and monitor

students’ work thoroughly. They ensure students

understand how well they are doing and what they

need to do to improve their work and excel.”

Ofsted 2014

Some subjects are now offered as a two-year linear A Level, so examination of your knowledge and understanding learnt on the course will take place at the end of two years. A Levels are assessed by written exams at the end of year two, although some coursework will be required. In subjects such as Art or Science your practical skills are also assessed.
