I always get a little sad after all

the excitement of the holidays

is over. After that last fire-

works signal another new year, it’s

a little hard to get back to work and

to reality. One of my least favorite

realities usually shows up in the

mirror—extra weight gain—and I

know that I am not alone. In fact,

the majority of the people I talked

to in Street Talk said losing weight was at the top of most of

their New Year’s Resolution lists. That’s why this issue on Health

and Fitness could not have come at a more opportune time.

Each of the people who I interviewed offered really great advice

on how to get fit and healthy and stay that way, even during

taste-tempting holidays!

Here are some of the highlights this issue:

In New Years 2013...The Secrets to Achieving Your New

Years Weight Loss Resolutions!, former Mr. USA and trainer

John DeFendis tells us what to look for in a personal trainer and

from a training program to ensure that you stay motivated to

achieve your fitness goals.

In Trust & Believe, Vanessa Stowers of Gift’s of Youth shares

her passion for helping people look younger by feeling younger

using the power of nature.

In Getting in Shape and Staying in Shape: Have Fun with

Your New Healthy Lifestyle, Dr. Sophie Woorons-Johnston and

her family practice what they preach, showing us that tennis is

a fun way to help keep you fit at any age.

In A Little Piece of Devon, Nancy and William Walker of

Walker Century Farms embarked on a goal to get healthy them-

selves and ended up sharing their grass-fed cow lifestyle with

others.

In Tim’s Story, personal trainer Tim Arndt, shares his per-

sonal story of weight loss struggles and how learning to eat in a

healthy way changed his life.

Although we may be feeling a little sluggish at first, the New

Year is really the perfect time to get motivated to change our

outlook on health and fitness so that we can enjoy our Anderson

Life for many, many more years! À Votre Santé!

Trust & BelieveIn a cozy little aromatic shop not far from downtown, Vanessa Stowers works her magic giv-

ing people the gift of youth. Not really magic, but a gift from God, Vanessa offers hope and

faith if you only trust and believe when you walk through the doors of Gift’s of Youth. Using

a pinch of herbal products, a dab of healing massages plus a healthy dose of good, old-fashioned

listening skills, she gives those in need an alternative way to heal and be healthier.

“What made me go towards a more natural approach to heal-

ing was my daughter Savannah who is now nine. Although I

had some problems myself with certain things growing up,

Savannah really motivated me more because she had so many

different things going on with her from birth. They diagnosed

her with eczema, the allergy kind associated with food, and it

became so bad that it triggered asthma. It also triggered other

things and by the time she was three years old, I was feeding

her 10 to 12 pills every morning. They wanted to keep giving

her tests and getting her blood drawn, and then they were giv-

ing her steroids, which left an impact in certain body areas.

Since she was my daughter, I wanted to see her healed so badly,

I knew that the best place to turn was to God, so he guided and

directed me. I started off with teas to flush out and detox her

body system and by making different creams for her skin. With

natural products, I know exactly what she is taking and there

are no side effects.”

Originally from Savannah, Vanessa was influenced by her

grandmother who lived in Iva. “My grandma was my best

friend,” Vanessa says, “She always inspired me and encour-

aged me to think positively. When I had things going on, people

would say negative things or try to cripple me, but my Grandma

turned it into a healing, a gift.”

A Business Management graduate, Vanessa says she origi-

nally wanted to go into the restaurant business because of her

passion for cooking. “I grew up on hospitality and putting love

and food together from scratch, but I really prayed about every-

thing I did, and God guided me to do this instead. I am such a

compassionate giver type of person. A lot of people need heal-

ing, love and gifts to bring their youth back because when you

feel good, you want to do things.”

Vanessa’s business started out as a mobile one, educating

people on natural herbal products and giving in-home healing

massages. “I started massaging early on, it just came naturally.

It really started with my Grandma. I was the only one that she

wanted to wash her back for her. At the time, I had arthritis in

my hands, but I gave it to God, and he took all that away so I

could help heal people. So then I started healing my family and

friends and it was just like a magnet. I would go directly to the

area where there was stress, tension and inflammation, and I

would work it and people were like, you really are good with

your hands.”

In November of 2011, Vanessa opened her shop, Gift’s of

Youth. “The name came from when I was doing my mobile

work. The things I was doing seemed to be helping people,

and when I would see them again, maybe even after just three

or four days, they would look more youthful. Like they had a

glow, like they had been cleansed. Again I prayed, and He was

inspired to give me that name with an apostrophe because the

youth really belongs to the gifts. And the gifts are God’s gifts,

which is His nature.”

All walks of life are welcome in her shop, Vanessa says. “I

have a lot of repeat customers—those with cancer, with differ-

ent body inflammations, hot flashes, people asking all different

kinds of questions. I operate on free will. Whatever they want to

know, that’s what I tell them, I never proclaim that this is going

to cure them, I’m just giving them hope and faith. Usually they

will try it themselves and come back and give me a testimony.”

“For instance,” she continues, “I received a card from one of

my regular customers whose husband had cancer. I had made

him some tea, and they wrote in the card that it really made a

difference, so much so that they were able to go on a vacation.”

Vanessa says that her herbal teas help by flushing out your

kidneys, your bladder and your bloodstream, giving you ener-

gy by flushing out toxins. “People just don’t know that in their

backyard is healing and peace. It is amazing the power, the en-

ergy, the healing you can get from just flowers and with nature

itself. But, I have some people who want fast results. Well, when

you want it fast, you have to go back to the pills or something.

This way you have to trust and believe. It will work—your body

is going to respond to it like it is supposed to in its own time.

Sometimes you get an outbreak before you even start your heal-

ing because it has to come out before it can start healing and

be repaired.”

Some of the natural products offered at Gift’s of Youth are

made in Africa and other developing countries by companies

that work with orphans and people without jobs. When you

purchase these products, Vanessa says, you’re actually giving

children food, clothing, and education, as well as helping the

adults get jobs.

“Peace, love, hospitality—that’s what I want to give,” Vanessa

says. “If you get what you give, that’s what I want. Gift’s of Youth

is open to whomever, but I pray, and this may sound crazy, but I

pray that people don’t come in here if they don’t have faith, be-

cause it would be pointless, like me fighting a tiger, a lion and a

bear. Like why are you even here if you don’t trust and believe?”

Gift’s of Life offers all natural health and beauty products for

internal and external usage including healing products such as

creams, oils, teas, signature incenses and much more, as well as

healing massages by appointment only.

Gift’s of Youth is located at 1219 N. Fant Street, Anderson, SC 29621. For more information, call (864) 760-1027.

Did you have a New Year’s Resolution

last year? Did you keep it?

My resolution was to stop drinking soda and I did stop. It took me a while to get into it, but I stopped after the summer and I haven’t had a diet coke since August. I do still need the caffeine, so I supplement with

plenty of coffee.

:My resolution has always been the standard “Gotta lose weight” but I have never kept it! I decided to make that a sum-mer resolution. My New Year’s Resolution for 2013 will abso-lutely be to volunteer more in service to the community AND to include my children to show them the importance of volun-teering. Our main focus will be helping at Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson. My mom is a resident out there, and I had never considered the needs of nursing facilities until going out there, even if it is just talking to the residents, donat-ing bird houses and bird seed and/or assisting with their

daily needs.

I always say I want to get richer and lose weight, but I always get poorer and gain weight, so I’m not even going to say that this year! I’m going to strive each day to be happy and to help someone along the way

each and every day.

On a picturesque piece of farm land, not far but nice-

ly hidden from the hustle and bustle of I-85, graze

small herds of rather beautiful red-hued cows.

Known as Red Devons, these small, boxy cows are the breeding

stock that supplies the steers that provide some of the tastiest

and healthiest beef in this area, which is what Walker Century

Farms is all about.

Owned by Drs. William (Bill) and Nancy Walker (a pulmo-

nary care physician at AnMed Health and a retired plant ge-

neticist from Clemson University, respectively), Walker Century

Farms has been in the family for over 100 years, and is today

operated by the couple, their son, Clifton, and Kelly and Kevin

Porter. All live on the property, and except for Nancy, help run

the business around full-time jobs.

According to Nancy, at one time Bill and his father operated

a commercial cattle farm using the Limousin breed of cattle.

“The Limousin is a big cow. Big and crazy. I never did like them.

I would comment to my friend at Clemson who is an animal

geneticist, Carl Thompson or Cattle Carl, that it was just not

in me to like cows. I just couldn’t do it, I’d tried. At some point

about 12 years ago, my husband decided that he was tired of

fooling with cows, so he got out of the cattle business, sold all

the calves, and leased out all the land. Then I got cancer.”

At that point, Nancy says, her husband started thinking

about eating healthy. “We weren’t necessarily people who ate

that bad, but there were some weak areas like we all have, so we

reevaluated, and he decided that he’d like to get back and have

some cows…just a few…maybe.”

Page 24: Anderson Life Winter 2013

24 AndersonLife•Winter2013

Bill started researching and looked at everything from the

Wagyu Kobe to the Angus. “Then he realized that grass-fed was

the healthy beef because it has an excellent omega-6/omega-3

fatty acid ratio,” Nancy says. “Wild-caught salmon is the only

thing that has a better ratio. So my husband decided that grass-

fed was the way to go.”

The Red Devon seemed

like a good choice for healthy

eating purposes, but that is

not exactly the reason the

couple chose the breed, says

Nancy.

“There are many breeds

that do well living on grass.

There’s the Red Devon, the

Scottish Highlander and some

others, mainly Northern Eu-

ropean breeds that do well on

grass. We found a farm up in North Carolina that had the Devon

cattle, so we went up there to visit them and see what they were

like. Well, these animals were so gentle, so docile. They were

pretty, but they were nice. You didn’t have to be concerned about

walking out in the pasture with them. I looked at Bill and said, “I

like these cows!” and that was it. That’s why we have this breed,

but that being said, we are really glad we chose them because

they marble extremely well. In fact, when we sent the first one

to our processor, he said, ‘Are you sure you didn’t give this cow

some grain. I can’t believe you only gave him grass.’”

There are two kinds of operations at Walker Century Farms,

the breeding operations, and the steers that are used for meat.

“We originally bought

five cows for breeding

purposes,” Nancy says.

“You don’t need all the

bulls for breeding, so

the rest are turned

into steers for meat.

At first we only had

a few steers, so my

husband convinced

some of his doctor

buddies to buy half a

cow. They knew it was healthy, but after they got their first

sampling and they ate that up, they came back for more. Beef

tastes different according to where it was raised. It all starts

with the soil—healthy soil gives you good grass gives you good

meat. We must have something right in our soil, because our

meat tastes great!”

After the Walkers had such a success selling half cows, they

started selling 20 piece family packs. “That allowed many more

people to try our beef.” Nancy says, “but it became a nightmare

because you had to arrange to have it frozen and for people to

pick it up from the local processor.” Slaughtering and process-

ing meats for sale must be done in a facility

licensed by the S.C. Meat and Poultry In-

spection Division, and it is labeled as such.

State and federally inspected processing

plants follow the same guidelines to en-

sure that meat is wholesome and safe for

consumption. The main difference is that,

by law, state inspected meats can only be

sold within the state.

Then, about two years ago, Nancy had a brainstorm. “I

thought to myself if I had a place to sell, I bet I could sell two or

three more cows in the next couple of months. So we decided

to build the market down the street, which opened in May of

this year.”

The Century Farms Market is open most Friday and Saturday

afternoons and sells their grass-fed beef, along with pork and

honey produced on the farm. It also carries a variety of prod-

ucts including milk, butter, cheese, eggs, rice, pecans, sauces,

mixes, dips, jams and jellies, peanut brittle, olive oil, sea salt,

coffee, tea and fresh produce—all produced in South Carolina.

And selling local is a concept that the Walkers want to support.

“The Red Devon is a heritage breed of cattle, and it is on the

slow food arch of taste,” Nancy explains. “Slow Food Interna-

tional is an organization that started in

Italy in the 1970s when McDonalds tried

to put a restaurant into Italy. The Italians

rebelled; they wanted nothing to do with

that fast food. So ‘slow food’ is the concept

diametrically opposed to ‘fast food.’ It is

local, it is sustainable, it is seasonal; that’s

the way to eat healthy. The other aspect is

buying from local farmers which supports the local economy.

It keeps people in business. It is much

better to eat anything local, rath-

er than things that are shipped

from another continent.”

“Our objective,” Nancy continues, “is to

really have Walker Century Farms be eco-

nomically sustainable. It is definitely a team

effort. Without the day in and day out help of

everyone involved, it wouldn’t happen. It just

wouldn’t happen.”

I hope that you enjoyed the holidays!

Now comes the question of how

are we going to get rid of the extra

pounds. The key to sticking with it, like in

any endeavor, is to actually enjoy exercis-

ing. You are going to tell me “enjoy” and

“exercising” in the same sentence, that’s

an oxymoron! But not really. Consider

tennis as an activity, for example. Besides

the obvious cardio-vascular benefits, ten-

nis is the No. 1 sport when it comes to

staying mentally sharp from the focus and

strategy it requires. You’ll get a great over-

all workout; muscles, heart rate, strength

and power. Although tennis can take

years to master—I’m still working on it

The intensity of the programs depends

on the objective of the students. Some les-

sons are geared towards learning proper

technique, others towards doubles strat-

egy. One particular program is geared to-

wards exercise, weight control and fight-

ing obesity (including children’s obesity).

That program is called Cardio Tennis.

There is a hard core component to it, but

it can be geared down to the objective of

each player. Tennis experience is not nec-

essary as the purpose is to hit some tennis

balls and keep moving. Players typically

burn between 500 (ladies) and 1000 calo-

ries during a one hour class. We crank the

I was heavy and overweight most of my life. It is kind of

hard to deal with when you have two brothers, and no one

in your family is overweight but you. My mom was a typi-

cal mom who wanted to protect me, who said it really wasn’t

my fault. I was made fun of, I was a running joke. Finally in

2002, right before my 22nd birthday, I just prayed. I said ‘Lord,

I feel that you are calling me to be someone that I just cannot

be in this situation and who I am now. I don’t know what it is,

and I don’t know how to get there, but if you’ll give me a way

out of this, I’ll take it.’

And at that point, I was about 358 lbs. I wouldn’t eat in front

of people, I ate once a day, I had been throwing up for about

three years. I had been in the hospital a couple of times. That

TIM’s Story

is something most people don’t like to talk about but it really

gets a grip on you, you feel like it is helping, but it is not. But you

do it for so long, it is really hard to stop. It got to a point where

my esophagus had ripped, and I was bleeding on the inside, and

the doctors told me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to stop doing this or you’re

going to die.’ That was easier said than done. I didn’t feel like

I could stop, but I knew I had to make some changes for real.

The first thing I had to do was to understand that it was my

fault. I couldn’t point fingers anymore, this was the hand that I

was dealt. There were things that I could do and be proactive, I

could learn and try to change my life.

At that time, I lived in Williamston and there was a pizza

place that I frequented. One day I called up there and told Chad

Page 29: Anderson Life Winter 2013

AndersonLife•Winter2013 29

Page 30: Anderson Life Winter 2013

30 AndersonLife•Winter2013

the owner, ‘Hey, I want to get some food,’ which was a large

pizza and something else just for me. When I got there, on the

counter was a flyer for this gym. I was waiting for my food, so

I picked it up and started looking at it, flipped it over and saw

‘Grand Opening Today!’ Then I looked at the address and it was

right across from my house. And I heard this clear as day—I

want to chalk this up to the Holy Spirit—he said, ‘You asked for

this.’ And I was like ‘You’re right and I’m done’. So I said Chad,

I don’t want my food. As a matter of fact, you’re probably never

going to see me again. I’ve got to go.

I was filled with fear immediately. It was one of the most fear-

some things I had ever had to deal with because I had already

been made fun of, and I usually avoid-

ed situations like this at all costs.

I didn’t go out in public at that

point, and if I did, I was the guy

huddled up in the corner. I was not about to get out there in the

middle of a social scene at all. But I knew it was my time. I didn’t

know what to do, but I had to take step 1, and this was going to

be it. So I drove over there and I was the first person to sign up

at this gym. I walked in already completely crying, in tears and

said ‘I need to change my life today. Like I need to start right

now. I know I’m not in work-out clothes, but if I go home first,

I’m not coming back.’ And they said okay. So I got on a treadmill

and started walking and that was where it started. I stayed at

that gym through the whole weight loss thing.

I went through two really bad trainers, which taught me what

not to do, and for the first three months, I gained weight. No one

taught me about food. That had not even come up in conversa-

tion. How in the world I did not stop at this point, I do not know.

Then the owner, who I love to death, finally said that he wanted

to help me himself. He said that he needed me to write down

everything I ate, he needed to know exactly what I was eating

because that was one of the biggest parts of weight loss. So, I

said okay. It was pretty simple because I only ate once a day, but

in mass quantity. So I wrote it down and brought it back.

That is the day everything changed because I sat across the

desk from this guy I respected and trusted and he told me, “I

need you to start eating six times a day.’ Of course I said, ‘What?

That is probably not going to happen’. And he said ‘Seriously,

you are going to have to do this.’ So, I’m a sensitive person and

I started crying again because that’s what I do, and I said, ‘As a

matter of fact, I quit. You’re an idiot, I eat one time a day and I’m

gigantic. I’m not going to eat five more meals. That’s not my goal

here.’ So I left and I walked back across the street to my home.

I stayed gone for about two weeks, then finally he called me

and said ‘I know you want to lose weight, I know you want to do

this. You’ve been working hard and haven’t gotten any results,

if you’ll give me 30 days, and you do what I ask you to do, and

you do not lose any weight, I’ll give you all your money back.’ So

he wrote down six meals that he wanted me to eat a day and I

started that the next day. In 30 days, I lost 35 lbs. Now that is not

normal. That was the Lord’s way of kicking me in the butt and

saying ‘This is what you need to do.’

So I went from one meal a day to being a complete Nazi about

eating meals in a very unhealthy way. I ate the same thing every

day for two years straight and would not eat anything else. If I

went out to eat, I had to carry everything I was going to eat in a

bag. That was fear. I didn’t know a middle ground. I went from

‘I don’t know what to do,’ to ‘Okay, this works,’ so I didn’t know

a medium in there at all. I just went completely overboard. At

this point I was getting up at 4 o’clock and doing an hour

look good/feel goodof cardio, I had a full-time job so I went to work all day, then

I’d come home to an hour of circuit training. Then I’d go home

and eat, then come back and do another hour of cardio before

I went to bed. I don’t recommend that, it was way too much.

It took me 18 months to lose 150 lbs, and during all that time,

I had this vision in my head. Once I lost all this weight, all my

bills would be paid, I’d have herds of hot women wanting to

hang out with me all the time—because my perception of any-

one in shape was they were always happy, they had money and

were successful and all that stuff. I walked around my whole

life wanting to be someone else. I had this image I was trying

to get to. I lost all this weight and one day I thought, ‘I still feel

the same about myself.’ None of the issues in my heart had been

fixed. My vision of myself hadn’t changed, my rejection issues

had not been fixed, the mirror didn’t fix me. But I didn’t know

that at the time.

Tim’s TIPS For Healthy Eating

So now after losing all that weight, I had a ton of loose skin. I

went to a local doctor for a surgery consult. No one knew I was

going, and he said, ‘yes we can fix that, it is going to be x amount

of dollars,’ and I said, ‘whoa’. At that point I had quit my job, I had

gone to school to fix airplanes, and I was working full-time at the

gym making no money. So I just prayed to the lord ‘If this is your

will, this is your bill. If you want me to do this, you’ll provide a

way’. A couple of hours later, a man came into the gym looking

for me and told me that they had paid for my surgery, ‘The Lord

had blessed them,’ he said, ‘now they were going to bless me.’ I

still don’t know who ‘they’ were.

So I had my surgery and six or eight weeks later, I had to have

an emergency surgery. I was septic, my organs were trying to

shut down and I almost died. So I had another conversation with

the Lord and I said ’This is your fault. You’re the one who got me

here, you paid for this, and now I’m going to die for this’. So the

Holy Spirit said, ‘Hey, I’m going to let you get as far as you can

get until you understand this is not your identity. You’re chasing

this dream, your whole identity is wrapped up in what you think

your stomach looks like, and it’s not, it’s not you.’

It got me thinking about far I was willing to go. I just kind of

gave it up at that point. I started to change the way I saw myself.

It was not an overnight process, but I needed that healing pro-

cess to start. My whole life story has been in preparation for what

I do now. It is truly amazing, I never saw this coming. I floun-

dered around and did some gym stuff, but I finally said, I want to

open up a place to give people like me a place to go so that they

don’t have to feel embarrassed, threatened and insecure. I want

to do that. There was nothing around here like that at the time,

so I said let’s do this.

I opened up Image Fitness the same month I got married to

my wife Jessica. It has been amazing. It took a little while to get

started, about a year, but basically I have been full ever since.

This has been such a blessing because most of the clients I get

in here are people who are dealing with the things I have already

had to deal with, not that anyone else couldn’t help them, but I

think the Lord chooses people for a reason. It has just been crazy

how much this venture has been blessed and how successful it

has been.

In addition to eating less fat and sodium, the American Heart Association suggests eating fewer calories and more fiber. To get the nutrients you need each day, opt for:

• More fruits and vegetables because they are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals but low in calories

• More whole grains, which can help lower cholesterol and control weight gain by making you feel full

Choice #1 Take control and start a calculated and progressive strength

training program and compliment it with the perfect nutrition-

al program for optimal results.

• Be healthier in 2013!

• Be leaner, fit and tone in 2013!

• Be stronger in 2013!

• Have more energy in 2013!

• Have more confidence in 2013!

• Make 2013 YOUR Year!!!

Now come on. Did you really need to go beyond choice num-

ber one? It sounds so inviting to me. Who doesn’t want to look

and feel their best? Who doesn’t want to be healthier and have

a better quality of life in 2013?

Okay then, if you insist...let’s discuss choice number two.

Written by John DeFendis Photographed by John Fowler

Happy New Year!

2013 is going to be

an incredible year

for everyone embraces the

great gift of life that we have

been blessed with! I know I

am blessed and I am so hap-

py to be able to work out, eat

healthy and enjoy being fit,

lean, energetic, strong and motivated. I plan to be the best I can be in 2013 at 55 years of age! LIFE IS

BEAUTIFUL!

How about you? Let’s talk about YOU for a moment. Are you ready to be your best in 2013? It’s time

to make one of two choices this New Year...

2013... A New You

Choice #2 Continue to make excuses why you are not in shape and why

your health is deteriorating each day.

• Blood pressure going up?

• Cholesterol?

• Blood Sugar levels rising?

Are you going to be okay with continuing this pattern? Choice

number two involves making New Year’s resolutions that cannot

be met because most people believe that they can just buy a stair

stepper or elliptical machine or just join a gym and get in shape

on their own. They have no game plan, little knowledge and the

temporary motivation of “Okay...it’s a New-year!”

The hard truth is that without truly knowing when to work-

out, when to eat prior and after the workout, how to perform the

correct exercises in the proper order and with proper form, most

people fail and quit within the first few weeks of the new year. And,

without having the knowledge of nutrition, training, how the body

recovers and when to rest, there is little or no success. Also, with-

out the motivation and confidence to succeed, it is easy to bounce

around and attempt so many different things—all which will cre-

ate failure and cause a person to give up on their goals prematurely.

Whether you decide to take me up on my offer to contact me

for assistance or not, my greatest suggestion is to hire a qualified

professional trainer who will solidify a time frame to achieve your

goals and properly train and coach you to success in 2013. After

all, how many times have you made the same New Year’s weight

loss resolutions and fallen short of your goals, finally giving up on

them. Why not make this year different. Go after it and take con-

trol! Don’t make one more excuse.

If you follow the guidelines in this article, you can create the

body you have always wanted. By doing so, I can assure the success

of your 2013 Healthy, Strong, Shapely & Fit New Year’s Resolutions.

The clock is ticking, so let me answer these important questions

for you.

Q: What kind of advice can you offer to New Year’s Resolution-

makers who want to start an exercise program and achieve suc-

cess?

A: First and foremost it is important that they find a profession-

al trainer with a successful program to insure their success. Too

many people begin a fitness program with no direction, no guid-

ance, no game plan and no map to Successville. What would you

do if I handed you the keys to my car and asked you to drop it off at

the car dealership in Hicksville, New York? Would you jump in and

start driving in hopes that you would eventually find your destina-

tion? No, you would first locate a map and outline your trip before

you begin to navigate it. In the same way it is imperative that a

quality certified personal trainer is implemented when someone

wants to lose weight, transform their body and their health and

get real results and long lasting results, it is also important that the

personal trainer they hire is associated with a well equipped fit-

ness center and a results-based program with a proven reputation.

A home based personal trainer does not have the equipment and

tools necessary to maximize a client’s efforts for success.

A well-rounded program will include a variety of strength train-

ing equipment such as machines, barbells, dumbbells and cables

as well as quality cardiovascular equipment, a sound and super-

vised healthy nutritional plan and a team of quality trainers who

work together to support your goals and ensure your success! Ev-

ery trainer on staff should have the same beliefs and support each

other, as to lend credibility to the program and your belief in them.

This in turn will give you the confidence to go after your goals with

their support and guidance. It is also important that the health

club and trainers take a personal interest in you and truly show

they care about you and your goals. They should have individual-

ized programs that focus on specific needs such as Weight Loss,

Fit After 50 (senior programs), Live the Life (health & heart care),

Beautiful Bride to Be (pre-wedding) Post and Pre-Natal Programs

and Sports Conditioning and Bodybuilding programs. Each pro-

gram should then be tailored to the individual and their specific

goals.

Q: What kind of exercises should be incorporated in the pro-

gram, i.e., walking, weight-lifting, Stairmaster machine, etc.?

A: The key to success in all programs revolves around strength

training. Strength training has more benefits than any other form

of training. With a properly supervised strength training program,

coupled with an effective and complimentary nutritional program,

a client can expect to reduce body fat and weight, increase meta-

bolic rate by increasing lean muscle, improve stamina and endur-

ance, increase bone density, improve stability and core strength,

lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, sustain blood sugar levels

and improve overall health. By increasing lean muscle, the client

will also sustain a healthy metabolism and maintain their weight

loss over time.

Every strength training program should be designed and imple-

mented by a professional personal trainer with knowledge and ex-

perience. The strength training program should be set up for the

person as an individual and should be calculated and progressive.

It should be challenging enough to also give them the cardiovas-

cular benefits as well as the anaerobic benefits. Too many people

attempt to learn on their own or from reading a fitness magazine

with many contradicting articles. Without the knowledge neces-

sary, it is impossible to succeed and can lead to injury or lack of

results. The number one reason why people give up on their New

Year’s weight loss resolution is because they lack the knowledge

to succeed and they end up quitting within weeks because they

aren’t getting results. A good professional trainer will make the dif-

ference.

Q: Is there a best time of day for exercising?

A: You will hear conflicting opinions, but the truth of the

matter is the best time of day to exercise is whatever is the best

time for that individual. It should be a time when you have no

distractions, excuses and the least amount of stress. Many peo-

ple will say mornings are best, but if you quit after one week

then you would have been better choosing a time that you can

be consistent with.

Q: What can someone do to stay motivated?

A: Motivation is a simple formula. It looks like this: A Trainer

+ A Quality Program (exercise & nutrition) = RESULTS = SUS-

TAINED MOTIVATION! As an example, if you started a job that

promised a rate of pay of $500 a week but you were not paid

after your first weeks work, would you come back to work the

following week? The obvious answer is NO. You would be dis-

couraged and probably not return. Now if you were promised

a $500 per week salary and after your first week of work, your

boss paid you the $500 that he promised you plus an additional

$500 bonus, would you come back to work the following week?

It all comes down to THE EFFORT vs. THE REWARD.

It is the same with a weight loss and fitness program. With

professional guidance and a quality program, a client will

achieve maximum success in a short period of time. This will

motivate the client to maintain their effort to succeed and ul-

timately bring them success! Once a person has realized that

fitness and good health is not a luxury—it is a priority—then

fitness will become more of a habit and then a lifestyle for them.

With a professional trainer guiding them and motivating them

to ensure success, they will remain in the game long enough to

see results and become motivated.

I personally started training when I was 10 years old after my

mother had her first heart attack at 36 years old. At that time,

my father handed me some weights and said “Lift This!” It was

the only thing my father knew when my mother went into the

hospital. I listened to him and learned fast. By the time I was 16,

my mother had two more heart attacks and weighed more than

320 pounds. I utilized my knowledge on training and nutrition

and helped my mother lose 180 pounds in less than 22 months.

This year, my mother turns 80. She has lived an incredible life—

forty more years than the doctors expected. This year I will per-

sonally be celebrating my 55th birthday—with my mother, the

beautiful woman that gave me life—and the incredible gift that

God has given me that saved the most important woman in my

life when I was only a teenager. I returned that life and have

since been motivated to save and change people’s lives. I am

motivated and inspired every day, in every way to help others

enjoy a better quality of life and a longer life.

I have truly been blessed and I understand that God has giv-

en me a talent, a blessing, a passion to make a difference and

the motivation to make it transpire. I ask that everyone realize

our health and our body are gifts from God that we must trea-

sure and value. That is what has kept me motivated for the past

45 years and continues to allow me to motivate others. Life is

beautiful and we must cherish our health.
