School NewsBOOK - LEARNING!

We've had a very exciting Book Week atStilton Primary, coinciding with WorldBook Day on 5th March. Throughout theweek, teachers from each class 'blew thewhistle on reading', where the children hadto choose a book and read for 10 minutes.

Owl and Robin Class have been thinkingabout animal stories. Owl Class have beenreading 'Dear Zoo' and Robin Class read'Rumble in the Jungle'. The children havebeen thinking about the different animalcharacters and ordering the stories. RabbitClass have focused on the work of RoaldDahl. The children became Willy Wonkafor the day by designing and making theirown sweets. Badger Class have beenmaking their own Iron Men out of recycledmaterials.

We also had Bedtime Stories in school, where the children came back to school inthe evening for a bedtime story with theirteachers. To round off the week, the wholeschool dressed up as book characters, witha heroes and heroines theme.

The children celebrated Mother's Day inschool with a special crafts afternoon inwhich they made a card and gift for theirmums. We would like to thank all the parenthelpers who came into school to help thechildren with this.

We would also like to take this opportunityto congratulate Mrs Harrison and MrsKnowles on being awarded five stars byHuntingdonshire EnvironmentalCommunity Health Services.

FRAUD OF THE RINGSOne of life’s certainties is that there are fewnew scams; most of them are the same oldsame old because people continue to fall forthem. One such has been reported by police:

Whilst driving, the victim is flagged downby a man (or men) next to a broken-downvehicle. The man states that he needs moneyto get petrol. As payment, the man offersthe victim one to three ‘gold’ rings and mayalso provide a business card suggesting linksto Berlin, Germany or Glasgow, Scotland.

The amount of cash taken is between £20and £300. (£300? How gullible can peoplebe?) However, the rings are worthless anddefinitely not precious.

Offences are occurring on ‘A’ roads andslip roads at major junctions in the Southof England. One victim reported seeing thesame offender(s) back at the same spot (the

Easter RecipesLET’S TRY A GERMAN TRADITION

In many countries, the end of the Lent fastis marked by traditional foods. In Britainwe eat hot cross buns on Good Friday. Thespiced sweet fruit bun is marked with across. We also eat Simnel cake; a fruit cakewith a layer of marzipan in the middle andone on the top. It was originally made forMothering Sunday but, since Victoriantimes, it became an Easter cake, decoratedwith 12 marzipan balls representing thedisciples plus Jesus - but minus Judas!

In Germany, celebrations begin on MaundyThursday and end on the Sunday withspecial food each day. The Easter egg andEaster Bunny seem to have originated inGermany and feature in decorations.

Maundy Thursday is known there asGründonnerstag, or Green Thursday, so itis usual to eat green foods such as herbs, leeks or spinach. Here is a typical recipethat would make a good lunch or lightsupper.

CHEESEY BAKED LEEKSClean four large leeks. Cut into quarters andsteam until soft (about 10 minutes). Drain.

Wrap each leek in a slice of ham and placein a buttered casserole dish.

Top with 150gms each of cheddar and goats’cheese and four thinly sliced spring onions.

Bake at 180oC, gas mark 4, until the cheeseis melted and brown. Sprinkle with choppedparsley.

On 26th April I am attempting to completethe 26.2 mile Virgin London Marathon, writes Sarah Paice. I am new to runningand only began it seriously when I foundout I had got a ballot place in the marathon.I hope to complete it in around 5½ hours.

I am fundraising toward a specialist SeizureAwareness Dog for a special little girl calledXanthe Peacock. Xanthe is five years old;she lives in Stilton and attends the villageschool. But Xanthe has a rare geneticdisorder, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, andhas drug-resistant complex epilepsy. Shecan experience anything from 6 - 45 seizuresevery day, which obviously massivelyeffects her and her family's life, as well asher physical and emotional development.

Service dogs can be trained to alert andrespond to children having a seizure. Theycan be trained to stay with the child andkeep them safe from danger, fetch blankets, protect them falling, stimulate and reassure

them while semi or unconscious, possiblyfetch medicine and even dial 999 on thephone! Some service dogs also develop asixth sense to alert people before a seizurehappens; often these dogs actually reducethe number of seizures children suffer wheremedicine doesn't work.

Sadly, these dogs aren't free or available onthe NHS and require a donation of about£6000 toward their specialist training.

Donations can be made directly to Xanthe’sPaypal account - please put a note sayingyou are sponsoring Sarah Paice.www.paypal.co.uk [email protected]

as part of a commute or school run. You’llsoon find yourself looking forward to the‘me time’ it gives you! You’ll be gettingfitter AND helping other people who maynot be lucky enough to get outside and moveevery day.
