Dear Saint Mary’s family

In this Second Week of Advent, I want to share with you a wonderful reflection by our late brother, Fr. Phillip O’Shea, OFM on the virtue of Patience, as he moved to Holy Name Friary, the Province’s former skilled nursing facility in Ringwood, N.J. Let’s reflect on how patience works in our lives, or better yet, why we grow impatient, especially as we age and become more dependent on others. Let’s keep in mind that impatience often comes from having a lack of peace about a situation.

“Basically, patience may be defined as the capacity to tolerate otherness. For us in the Judeo-Christian tradition, original sin is our inability to accept God’s way from being different from our own. In other words, God was other than we. As we grow older, our attitude toward otherness must mature if we are to live a full life. This is God’s world. He has given this world to us to enjoy and to make use of properly. If we accept this, if we say Thy Will be Done,” that enables us to develop a tolerance for things as they really are. The exercise of that tolerance is one of the meanings of patience.

Here at Holy Name Friary, our aging and our physical disabilities give us a greater awareness of our limitations and of the increasing otherness of what we would like to do and what we can do. This awareness can be approached positively or negatively. From the positive point of view, we accept our limitations and utilize our capability to the greatest degree that we can. From the negative point of view, we refuse to accept things as they are because they are not as we would like them to be. It is here that patience reveals itself as a dimension of wisdom. This realization makes it easier for us to see ourselves as the House of Prayer, which the Province has declared us to be.

As residents of the House of Prayer, we find that being patient — tolerant of the greater difference between where we are and where we would like to be — changes our image of ourselves from the way we thought we were to the way we really are. We begin to see that God being the other is a good thing for us and for the world in general. We realize that thereafter is a distinction between the way things are and the way we want them to be. We begin to allow God’s way to become more and more satisfying. We discover that the virtue of patience allows us to be positively content with being who we are today.

That patience also allows us to think differently about ourselves and the way we relate to others. Patience allows us to work effectively with others even in area where there is some disagreement.

Coming to Holy Name Friary helps us to realize how great is the possibility we possess to work with others here. Humility — the virtue which allows us to cooperate with others — is not a down-grading of our dignity or ability but rather a joyful acceptance of our limitations as sources of understanding and acceptance of the reality that things can be other than we want them to be, without destroying our capacity to see possibilities in areas we never thought we would.”

Fr. Philip, was native of Massachusetts, he died on November 16, 2019. He was 88, a professed Franciscan friar for 46 years and a priest for 44. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace!

Your brother and servant in Christ, in the spirit of Francis of Assisi,

Padre Gonzalo

The Giving Tree Program is beginning its 42nd year. In 1977, the

Christian Service Club of St. Mary’s School had its first Giving

Tree. That first tree stood in the school. The students’ efforts

produced almost 400 packages the first year. Today the giving tree

program supports parish community families who are served by the

Food Pantry.

This year we are asking for monetary donations of $25. This will

allow our families to make their own choices of things they need

for Christmas.

Gift tags may be taken from the trees hanging in the church, in the

Carnevale Center and in the Parish Center.

Gift tags and donations must be returned by December 8.

Thank you for your continued support.

RCIA 2019

Are you searching for a Church community to call your

own?

Do you know any adults who might be interested in joining

our Franciscan community at St Mary's?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the

process by which adults are formally received into the

Roman Catholic Church.

RCIA is a journey of faith where adults are introduced to the

Church and is the process by which adults who were never

baptized or were baptized in another Christian tradition or

those who were baptized as Catholics and never received

Confirmation or Eucharist complete their Sacraments of

Initiation.

RCIA Inquiry sessions are ongoing, for more information,

please contact Keith Orotosky at 973.476.4398 or

[email protected].

The 2nd graders will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation on December 4, 5 and 12. Please keep them in your prayers.

The 4th graders completed their Service project by donating Christmas gifts to the needy children from the Soup Kitchen.

What a beautiful way for the children to start the season of Advent. A special thank you to all the children and their parents who participated.

I would like to invite all of our children and their families to the Family Liturgy Mass on Sunday’s. The Mass time is 10:30 am at the Carnevale Center. The children participate by doing the readings. The homilies given by our Friars helps the children to understand the Gospel.

I encourage all of you to attend and share as a family during the Advent season.

REMINDER: 1ST AND 5TH GRADE CLASSES WILL START ON JANUARY 5, 2020 **

IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED YOUR CHILD, PLEASE DO SO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

**Please be aware there is a $25 late fee excluding New Parishioners.

SOUP KITCHEN– The Saint Mary's December SOUP KITCHEN is full. Thank you to the volunteers.

Women of Prayer and Spirit will meet on Tuesday,

January 7, at 7:30 PM in the Prayer Room. We begin

by praying for intentions we have promised to pray for or for intentions that are concerning us. Prayer is followed

by discussion of “The Invitation to a Further Journey” and “Introduction” in Falling Upward by Richard Rohr, OFM.

Most women try to attend every month; however, attend-ance is fluid. If you’ve considered joining this group in

the past, January’s meeting would be a perfect time to come and see what we’re about. New members are welcome every month. “A prayer circle can never be too

big.”

STEPHEN MINISTRY

Training Update

Continue to lift up our Stephen Ministers and Stephen Leaders in prayer. Here’s what they’re covering this week.

Session Four—Process versus Results in Caregiving

If ever there were a time for Stephen Minister trainees to say “Aha!” this module would be it. They learn the key under- standing that they don’t have to (and in- deed can’t) fix whatever problem it is that their care receiver faces.

This session is a time for a collective sigh of relief. God is the curegiver; the Stephen Minister is the caregiver. This establishment of roles is what makes Stephen Ministry possible. The concept runs counter to the strong results-oriented approaches of present-day society. But in caregiving, the more one pushes for results in another, the faster and farther they flee.

St. Mary’s “Gabriel Society”

Dear Saint Mary’s Family,

The angel Gabriel was sent from the Lord to announce to

Mary the good news that she had been chosen by God to

be the mother of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Thanks be to

God for Mary’s “yes” and for the action of God through

Gabriel!

How would you like to be a joyful and protecting “angel”

for the children of St. Mary’s School? Like Mary, your

“yes” will help ensure a Catholic education for our

wonderful and precious students.

We invite you to become a member of the St. Mary’s

“Gabriel Society.” With your financial contribution,

you will help us cover the increasing costs of a Catholic

School education. And you will help us to provide

financial assistance for those families who are not able

pay full tuition. 75% of students who attend St. Mary’s

School receive some sort of financial aid, so your

generous donation will be greatly appreciated.

Suggested levels of giving:

Gabriel: $5,040 (the cost of one year’s tuition)

Michael: $2,520 (one-half the cost of one year’s tuition)

Raphael: $1,000

Please visit our front office, School or website to

contribute.

Thank you for your support of our children and of

Catholic education.

of Assisi,

About Advent Wreaths

Traditionally, Advent wreaths are constructed of a

circle of evergreen branches into which four

candles are inserted, representing the four weeks of

Advent. Ideally, three candles are purple and one is

rose, but white candles can also be used.

The purple candles in particular symbolize the

prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and

goods works undertaken at this time. The rose

candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday,

when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass;

Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because

the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent,

when their preparation is now half over and they

are close to Christmas.

The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes

the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s

first coming into the world and the anticipation of

his second coming to judge the living and the dead.

The Blessing of An Advent Wreath

With hands joined, the leader says:

Lord our God,

we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:

he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples,

he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us,

he is the Savior of every nation.

Lord God,

let your blessing come upon us

as we light the candles of this wreath.

May the wreath and its light

be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation.

May he come quickly and not delay.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

Dear Saint Mary’s Family, May the Lord give you peace! I am happy to report that since we launched our Annual Fund, we have raised $153,640 in total pledges of which we have received $143,974 so far. To date, 577 families have made a gift toward our goal of $325,000. If you have not yet contributed to this year’s Annual Fund, I urge you to do so now. I would love to count you among those donors in my next report! This annual fund is vital to the operation of the parish and our building of God’s Kingdom at Saint Mary’s. Without the income from the Annual Fund we cannot sustain the activities and ministries of our parish. If you've never made a gift to the Annual Fund, or if it's been a while since your last gift, may I ask that you consider a gift of $100 or more this year. Each year I am amazed and humbled by the commitment that you and people like you make to St. Mary's. Once again, thank you for your generosity. I hope I can count on you to support this year's Annual Fund. Thanks for all you do for us and be assured of my prayers and the prayers of all the friars for you and your loved ones.
