A very happy New Year to you all.
At the turn of the year, our thoughts are often aspirational… I’m going to be thinner, smarter,learn a new skill, be an amazing cook… the list is endless; but the reality is that we all toofrequently set ourselves unachievable goals. We expect miracles, feel disappointed whenthey don’t happen and then give up. But I reckon miracles do happen every day and allaround us. Martin Luther King wrote that ‘only when it is dark enough can you see the stars’.We are all remarkable and unique, so I am going to concentrate on the small miracles andgood times… that way I get to build a bank of great memories. So please, take time toenjoy those around you, appreciate their uniqueness and enjoy the miracles that they bring.
Preparing the magazine is not an easy affair and whilst the autumn brought quite a fewarticles, this time of the year I think people have gone to ground a bit to stave off the coldand damp!! The magazine depends on your contributions, so please ladies, let me knowyour Tangent News, what makes your region special or just share what’s on your mind!! It’s really easy, just write your articles and email them to me. In this issue, we formally announce that the AGM will take place in Harrogate on Saturday18th April. There is plenty of hot news about the AGM – please turn to pages 5 and 6 tosee what it is! I hope that as many of you as possible will be there and if your club isn’t ableto attend, do consider asking another Tangent to act as your Club’s proxy. I have askedAlex Voller and Terry Cooper – currently vice-presidents of Tangent and 41Club respectivelyto look forward and our lovely President Janice, has given her story from the hot seat.Another hot piece of news is the imminent new Tangent website. I have been working hardwith our website developer, Rob Fisher and his team; but in the meantime I have to givemy enormous thanks to David Hewitt who is keeping us on track by managing the presentsite until we switch over. As I write members of the Exec are helping me to input into theclub finder which will be a new feature. Linked to google maps, you will be able to locatethe nearest club to you and then get directions. I hope you will be as excited as I am atthe new look site… we are hoping to go live soon!!! There are lots of events in prospect, so do take note of them and come along. You arenever alone at a Tangent event!

President’s corner
I can’t believe this is my last missive for Tangent News as
National President. Where did the time go? So here we go….
I attended the Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show at Grosvenor
House, Park Lane, London in October with Jilly King, our National
Treasurer. We were privileged to take our daughters. The event
was so moving, with all the models, including 2 men, having
had breast cancer and some of them had had mastectomies.
The Women of the Year lunch was truly inspiring!
Since the last Tangent News I have attended 22 Club events
including Clacton on Sea’s Round Table Family Ball. Friendship
evenings in Downend, Pinner, Altrincham, Stowmarket, Daventry,
Amersham, Anniversary celebrations in Petersfield, Kenilworth,
Gillingham and Shaftesbury, Spalding where there have been
several clubs represented. I have been made welcome in so
many places, Winchester, Retford, Wallington and Carshalton,
Burnham on Sea, Rushden, Harpenden, Llwchwr, Chepstow,
Mumbles and Thornbury. I do hope I haven’t left anyone out.
There has been so much laughter but I think Mumbles win on
having too much fun. And thank you to Llwchwr Tangent, you
know why!!
I attended a Ladies Circle Council Meeting in Newquay and
the National President of Circle’s Ball (Claire Wevell wowed us
all right from the beginning with a stunning table firework
display). There have been 2 more Regional Lunches, thank you
Aberdeen and Fareham and apologies for not shortening my
speech.
My own Presidential Ball was a huge success raising an
extraordinary amount for Breast Cancer Care. It was a
complete sell out before the closing date and I must thank the
team from Bushey and Oxhey Tangent and Take Two,
Berkhamsted who organised the event; .a massive act of
juggling to accommodate everyone!
There have been lots of meetings in preparation for my Charity
Lunch in London which also sold out before the Early Bird
deadline! I am looking forward to recreating the Regional
lunches we used to attend where we celebrated on the train
before the event even started. I’m not so sure about standing
on chairs though at this event! A little more difficult climbing up
and down! Hopefully there will be lots of photos!
I went to the first Half Year Meeting for Tangent Club International
in Sweden where I really did jump into a freezing cold lake after
the outdoor Jacuzzi. Why did I do that? Goodness only knows.
Karen Durie our IRO is the current Tangent Club International
Treasurer, a less frenetic position after her busy year as National
President, but exciting as it is so new.
I did some washing up at the Harpenden Circle Christmas Fayre
with the Circle VP Zoe Gaskill. I drank far too much (as did many
others!) at The Lamb Christmas party in Leadenhall Market with
79 41’ers and a sprinkling of Tangent ladies. My poor husband
had to take me home in a ‘poorly’ state for the 2nd year
running. Never again she says!
I’ve been touched by the donations sent to me for my chosen
Charity, Breast Cancer Care. If we can take anything from our
partnership with Breast Care, it is the hope that we are more
aware of the importance of having a mammogram even if we
are outside the 50-70 age group. Please ladies, get yourselves
checked out, it is your right to be tested. Chepstow Tangent
sent me a cheque for BCC and even met me at short notice
so I could say thank you personally. Fingers crossed they might
even organise a Welsh Regional Lunch – please?
Halloween with Wallington and Carshalton was amazing, the
food was spectacular and we discovered one lady went to
school with my brother and played in our front room! Small
world Lesley!
Thank you to the clubs who also looked after my husband so
royally, Gillingham and Shaftesbury and Clacton to name but
a few. John loved the bulbs from Spalding; I think they are
beginning to pop up now.
Now I’m into the final stage and I’ve joined up with Saltburn and
also Beverley Westwood this week. The home hosting was
superb.
I have been invited to a further 32 Tangent clubs, a Round Table
Council meeting and President’s Ball; more AGM planning trips
to Harrogate, 2 more Regional Lunches, in Malvern Hills and
Northern Ireland, a Circle Regional Lunch and a trip to
Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey fame).
We have just held the National Exec AGM planning weekend –
grateful thanks to Melodie, our lovely secretary who has worked
tirelessly to prepare everything! The conference will be held in
Harrogate this year; have YOU booked yet? Bookings are doing
well and there are lots of exciting things to do while you are
there – and it is a beautiful part of the country.

Stuck for someone to stand for Chairperson?
Bury St Edmunds Chairman, Pat Brega and Stowmarket & District Chairman Chris Shemming with Janice O’Neill
For the last 12 years Stowmarket and District 913 and Bury StEdmunds 187 Tangent Clubs have held an annual Chal-lenge Evening. The challenge is usually some silly game butit is a good excuse for getting together and enjoying somecontinued friendship. This year Stowmarket challenged BurySt Edmunds and invited National President Janice, whoturned out to be very good at Beetle Drive! After the wineand cheese, many laughs, and a good time had by all, Burywon the trophy. We very much enjoyed meeting Janice andpresented her with a hamper of Suffolk goodies.

Shepperton Tangent share their experience …..
We all know the dilemma of trying to encourage membersto take on the role of Chairperson for our clubs. It can bequite a headache. Shepperton Tangent, however, had itcracked. They had 3 candidates hotly contesting the post…but there was one little problem… they were all members ofShepperton 41 Club!
Tom, Gerry and Mike are not down-hearted – they can see all thebenefits of belonging to Tan-gent and are very willingto swap their allegiancefrom Shepperton toany other club whomay be interested. The‘Nora Batty’ lookalikes arealso willing to appear atbirthdays, weddings or, funerals etc…. in fact they’lltake any gig offered!!

The Exec have met several times during the year. Historically
we’ve met on the Friday before the Regional Luncheons, but
we have tested the option of Sundays to help working ladies.
This will obviously change to suit each Exec group but it shows
our flexibility. We’ve had a myriad of subjects to discuss, the
most exciting being the new website which is due to go live
soon. We’ve listened to what the membership need from a
website so I hope you will all be proud of the efforts put in by
Pauline Campbell and the rest of our team. For Facebook afi-
cionados, we are building up the membership on our Tangent
Group page; we must increasingly embrace social networks as
a communication tool just as businesses use LinkedIn.
We have also discussed the option of an additional meeting
for extra contact with our members. In October we are hosting
the Half Year Meeting for Tangent Club International in October,
and hope to trial a Half Year Meeting for Tangent GB, to give
members the opportunity to share and discuss issues.
We have worked very hard behind the scenes with the 4 Club
Family and especially on membership. Alex Voller, our VP has
been in contact regularly with the Circle Membership Officer
and we are looking at more ways of building the bridge into
our Tangent clubs. Sue Hill has had a health issue recently but
is recovering and getting ready to return to work. However, top
marks for continuing to place Regalia orders and liaise with
Luncheon committees.
After all that I look forward to getting along to my 3 clubs.
Aside from Tangent I have continued singing in the Rock Choir
and we have even recorded at Abbey Road Studios! I’ve
managed to carry out my monthly ‘Dinner Lady’ duty at the
local Hospice In-Patient Unit and enjoyed my monthly network
club called Business Buzz. I’ve even managed to make the
monthly meetings for NLP. I am a Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic
Programming and looking forward to studying for my Masters
Certificate. I also have a new ‘grand-dog’ which I walk regularly
for my daughter (or should I say grand-dog takes me for a
walk!).
So what will I do when my Tangent Year ends? As IPP, I will take

in Cyprus the week after Harrogate, 24-26 April. It would be

Paula farnfieldHello Ladies, I’m Paula Farnfield, if you were in Bournemouth for last year’s AGM you may remember me from there or if you have left
Circle recently you will remember me as National Secretary 2004-05.
I’m making the most of the free time my redundancy has given me to enjoy visiting friends & family, my various crafting interests and as a
trustee for Round Table Children’s Wish.
A lot has changed in my life since last year in Bournemouth, but the one constant has been my desire to give back to the Round Table
Family. Having been on the receiving end of incredible amounts of friendship and support from members of all four clubs, I know that that
it is vital that these fabulous organisations continue to thrive and provide future generations with the opportunity to experience the fun and
friendship we have had. I’d love the opportunity to give my time, energy & experience to work towards that future.

Jocelyn MilesI am the great Pretender! After a busy Circle career in my own club and then in Area and on the National Executive as Treasurer, I am a late-
comer to the joys of Tangent and as yet have not taken up the challenge offered by a post in a local Tangent Club. My interest in pursuing
the gargantuan step of standing for Vice-President has been fired by attending my first Tangent Conference last year, where I met up with
good friends, who have encouraged me in this venture. What else has taken up my time and kept me from Tangent otherwise, you may
ask? Well, working as a school bursar and rekindling my interest in playing the violin with some local groups have certainly kept me busy.
And I very nearly didn’t put myself forward, but this is a really exciting opportunity and one that I just couldn’t let slip through my fingers.

Lesley sevilleI joined Tangent shortly after Frank left Table for 41 Club; being a Circler it seemed the natural thing to do. Formerly a member of Ripley
and Chairman of Ely & District Circle, I am now a Tangent member of both Bebington and Octagon and the cluster clubs of City of London
and Emeritus. I was previously a member of Ely & District Tangent, where I served as both Chairman and Treasurer. I have also been
Chairman of Octagon and Secretary of City of London Tangents. As a recent National Treasurer of Tangent, I believe this experience stands
me in good stead for the role of VP and, ultimately, President as I understand both the roles and the operation of Tangent Exec.
I would love to serve Tangent again nationally, as I believe I have the credentials to do so. I enjoy theatre, ballet, good food, good wine and
fun!

Colchester tangle: Ladies in the Driving seat with
On 4th December 2014, Colchester Tangle visited their local KwikFit to experiencea new initiative ‘Ladies in the Driving Seat’. KwikFit established these evenings toencourage ladies to learn general maintenance for their vehicles, in a non-intimi-dating environment. We had heard rumours about the evenings and decided to contact them to see if it was true. It certainly was, and following ashort email to the contact address on the website http://www.kwik-fit.com/ladies-car-care-home.asp proved incredibly easy to arrange. We had fantastic communication from them, arranging a convenient start time for us (they usuallystart at 6.30pm but moved it without hesitation to 7.30pm, as several of our members commute from London) and numbers attending.
We were promised a relaxed, welcoming evening where we would be shown various aspects of car care, from ‘under the bonnet’ to tyres, wiper blades andlights. Refreshments would be provided, and we would all get a small goody bagto take home. The cost of this evening? Absolutely free! It sounded too good tobe true but proved to be just that, we got exactly what they promised. Hot andcold drinks, biscuits and small cakes (one member was very excited by the pinkfondant fancies!) and a team of mechanics who took us through the different aspects. We even had the pleasure of meeting the Regional Marketing ExecutivePolly Cooper who had arranged it all for us, as she liked to attend the eveningspersonally to welcome the ladies.
On arrival, we were introduced to the mechanics, all of whom looked slightly nervous at being accosted by a bunch of rather chatty, excitable women, and informed of how the evening would run.
We split into three groups, one to learn about ‘under the bonnet’, wiper blades andlights, another to learn about tyres and the last to learn how to change a tyre. Thegroups rotated so that we experienced all three.
We learned about topping up oil, screen wash, brake fluid, and the reasons forchoosing different products for these, how to read the dipstick accurately, cleaningwiper blades and changing bulbs.
The difference between winter and summer tyres was explained, how to know thesize of tyres and the importance of pressures, tread and general condition, and finally how to change a tyre. Even those of us who thought we would know it all(I was one of those) learnt some really useful facts, and we all felt comfortableenough to ask questions.
We had an extremely informative, and more importantly fun evening with a greatbunch of staff who we found out, had stayed late at work to run the evening. Somehad been at work since 6.30am but at no point did we feel they had been inconvenienced or did not want to be there. At the end of the evening, we werepresented with the goody bag which contained a window scraper and a tyre treadmeasurer amongst other things. We could not praise ithighly enough and would thoroughly recommend it asan event for any Tangle/Tangent programme.

Jill harrisHi everyone, I am Jill Harris, and I am standing for the post of National Treasurer. Many of you will have know my Husband and it is due to
everyone’s kindness to me throughout the 4 Clubs that I am standing in order to personally give something back.
I am a Chartered Surveyor by profession, still working part time and I prepared the company accounts. I am not a trained accountant but I
have drive and determination and am not afraid to ask those that have done it before for advice as I am not here to reinvent the wheel.
I have 2 children and 5 grand children with ages from 10 to 1 month all which keep me busy. My main hobbies are photography and travel
and I try to do both as much as I can. If asked to an event and I can get there I rarely say no! I have always supported Tangent, Ladies
Circle, Round Table and 41 Club and attended hundreds of events through my support for Vaughan but I now have the opportunity to be
able to do something myself.

Jackie hamptonI’m Jackie Hampton and have been happily married to Paul for 32 years. We have two children Christopher (24) and Samantha (21) and
live in Winnersh, in Berkshire. During my day I am a Teaching Assistant - working with children is interesting – no two days are the same.
My Circle journey started in 1999 when a friend introduced me to Twyford Circle. I held a number of roles including Secretary, Treasurer
and Chairman. My love of Circle developed and I soon started playing an active part in my local area, Area 13 – being the Secretary and
Chairman. I attended a number of LCI events – Tallinn during my year as Area Chair and India (50th anniversary year).
I also have helped organize 2 National Presidents balls for Table.
I am a member of two clubs - Twyford Tangent, but also helped found a new Tangent – Lodden Tangent, being the founding Chairman.

Glynis suttonI’ve been married to Andy for 36 years after we met at Reading pop festival - I was a child bride obviously!
I joined Chesham Circle in 1990, enjoyed years of fun and friendship, and was LC Area Chairman 1998-9. Such fabulous memories, co-
ordinating area balls, ladies nights, old folks lunches and charity events. Progressed on to Tangent and enjoying continued friendship. I’m
currently heading the Tangent Charity Lunch committee, keeping Janice our President in line, not an easy task! My day job is Office and
Communications Manager, am involved in spreadsheets, databases, campaign planning, and co-ordinating events. I believe all these expe-
riences would be beneficial to the exciting new position of Executive Administrator, I’m confident I can be a useful member of the National
Executive. Once the work is done, I’m very keen on G&T’s and wine – essential for every Tangent experience! It would be an honour to be
the new Executive Administrator.

During the year, Jean said she had been made aware of the following points
1. How many members move house.
2. How many keen members have not been in Ladies’ Circle
3. How many clubs become involved in Charity/Welfare work
4. How much Clubs worry about size – be it too large or toosmall – lack of recruits – need to affiliate and so on’
Jean said that she sometimes wondered if our Motto shouldnot read ‘Let Friendship Continue with Tolerance’; for eachmember to contribute how much or how little they wish to doso, tolerant of change in the needs of the Association.
‘The Old Order Changeth…..time does not stand still. Only bymeeting as many members as possible can the Executiveyou elect run the Association as you wish. Please do not letlack of formality become lack of communication.’
Well, here we are in the final quarter of my two year journey!I must say that the last three months have been very busy butalso very enjoyable, the best part of all is meeting so manyladies on my travels. I have been to Taunton for the SW Regional Lunch, up to Aberdeen for the Scottish Meeting andlunch hence the picture of me with the Scotty dog – I have asmaller one for the car (he comes everywhere with me now) –hand knitted by a member up there for everyone that attended the lunch which I gather was to be 60 and then it in-creased somewhat. Well done to the lady who knitted all thoselittle scotty dogs – a massive task and just amazing!
Then down to Fareham for the SE Regional meeting and lunchwhere I managed to lose my hat – these things happen! I left it at the hotel and I phoned them as soon as Igot on the train but they were in the middle of a fire alarmprocess and then they could not find it! So if anyone has founda white bag with a black felt hat in it – it is mine!
The really special trip was to take part in the RemembranceService in London- this was incredible – such a special day andI was so lucky to be able to be there this year. On the traingoing up I met a man who’s 85th birthday it was and this wasthe first time the procession had taken place on his birthday! He had so many medals, he was telling the wholetrain carriage about how he got them, even serving on the ArkRoyal with Prince Philip and meeting the Queen- this guy reallymade my day – this is what it is all about! So many memories.
Janice’s Presidential Ball wasamazing and especially nicefor me as it is the first dance myhusband and I have been tosince he came out of hospitalin April this year after an 8months stay.
On to Christmas with the familywhich again was very special –all being back together again.
So now the downward slope tothe AGM for me!We have a few meetings organised where we plan the AGM anda few Regional meetings and lunches to go to, the first is the Midlands Lunch in Malvern Hills – never been up there so reallylooking forward to that and then the meeting in Ireland comes up
on the 28th March, then the AGM in Harrogate, so much to do inmy final four months. Then I suppose after all this activity I must findsomething to fill the void that it will leave! I will be very sad for it tocome to an end as I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute butthey say all good things come to an end sometime!
I think the family will be glad to have me back! And you never knowI may stand for something again in the future if you will have me!

This means getting to know how your breasts lookand feel so you know what is normal for you. You can then feel more confident aboutnoticing any unusual changes.
Most changes won’t turn out to be breast cancer but if they are, the sooner this is diagnosed the more effective treatment may be.
Usually changes in your breasts are not accompanied by any other symptoms, suchas feeling tired or having less energy. So even if you feel well, it’s still important to visityour GP.
Although it’s less common, men can also get breast cancer so be sure to ask theman in your life to look at the check list below as well.

girlfriends and your friends who are within the 18-45 age range
are all invited to join us and join in all the fun.
Just like Tangent, we enjoy a tremendous amount of activities
ranging from events such as making chocolate truffles and trips
to the cinema to wine tasting, salsa dancing, or even life drawing!
We’re also active in supporting our local community groups and
charities through volunteering or fundraising and in the past have
been strong supporters working side-by-side with Tangent for Can-
cer Research UK Race for Life, and also our brother-groups Round
Table and 41-Club on behalf of the BBC Children in Need Appeal.

Members of Bournemouth North Tangent thought they would
have a fun meeting and decided to have a sandcastle building
competition!!
Buckets and spades at the ready members teamed up and the
competition began with various designs followed by a group
effort of a big sandcastle placing Chairman Lyn Lambert on top
for photos...
...but it did not end there.
A group of local business people on a team building evening on
the beach approached and wanted to buy our sandcastle!!!!!!!
After a quick explanation of who we were and our fund raising
efforts and a bit of haggling £40 was given towards our charity.

A message from the Vice President of 41 Club
As I sit in our kitchen in January thinking about April I can’t believehow fast this year has gone and the fact that I’m just three shortmonths away from starting my Presidential year. Then I think to myself“am I ready for this” and the answer is a huge YES, bring it on!The 2015 -16 year is an important one for 41 Club as we have twosignificant events happening in the UK Association. For a start 41Club is 70 years old and to celebrate that mementos event we areholding a Charter Lunch at the Armouries in Leeds on Saturday 12thSeptember. This is going to be a grand affair with a Brass Band, thebroadcaster Martyn Lewis as our guest speaker and a great mealserved in magnificent surroundings. I hope we do the Associationproud and that 500 plus 41’ers have a great time I know I will justbeing part of this occasion. The Celebration continues in the 41Club Regions with at least one 70th Charter event scheduled duringthe year. To make the year extra special any new 41 Club memberjoining during our 70th year will receive a unique lapel badge tocommemorate their membership.
The second big event of this coming 41 Club year is that the UK Association are hosting the International Half Yearly meeting inBirmingham on the 23rd to 25th October. Dave Campbell, our
international Officer (someone your Editor Pauline knows well!), andhis committee have organised a fantastic weekend for ourInternational visitors. Based at Jury’s Hotel on Broad Street in the
heart of the city and close to the entertainment area of BrindleyPlace and the Canal district. There will be a Welcome Party on theFriday Evening then we have the formal International Half YearlyMeeting during the day on Saturday followed by a Ball on the Saturday night. To make this International visit extra special we’vecombined the 41 Club National Council Weekend with this eventso everyone can have a great time. Like all International events andour own Council Weekends this event is with our partners.
So what of my other thoughts, it seems to me that the best way Ican promote our Association is to get out into our Regions and talkto our members. The President should have a visibility and an approachability second to none and I would like to complimentJim Smith on this for his year. Jim certainly has been out there, visitingClubs and talking to members, and I want to do the same. I knowit’s going to mean lots of travelling but I have the full support of mywife Lin and together we’ll cover the miles smiling all the way as thisis such a wonderful opportunity to have fun and fellowship. My ownClub Clevedon 41 Club together with Clevedon Tangent are alsoinvolved and I hope many of them will where possible attend eventswith us.The other thing I’m looking forward to is sharing my year with yourlovely Vice President Alex Voller. Alex and I have already found welike similar things and both intend to go all out for our special year.Doing joint events is going to be fun and I might even learn to ridea tray so I can race Alex down the stairs! I’m going to have to close now asPauline will be editing me back (I expect she will do that anyway) however I look forward to meetingmany of you as I attend joint eventsaround the UK.

I need to start by thanking you all for choosing me to be your VicePresident this year.
The year started off with euphoria, and has carried on with muchhappiness and excitement, I have been so privileged to wear theVP chain and have the opportunity to come out and start meeting many of you, all of whom have greeted me with welcome and enthusiasm. It has been a truly wonderful experience, so my huge thanks, very sincerely.
On Saturday 18 April 2015, at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate I willbecome President of the National Association of Tangent Clubs,and I am so looking forward to the weekend the Harrogate committee are putting on, it looks truly magical, and I would bedelighted to meet as many of you as possible, so please comealong – do look at www.41clubconference.co.uk
And so my year begins, I realise it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am hoping to share much fun and friendship,and serve Tangent to the best of my ability. I aim to make theExec team as tight knit as possible, and make it the kind of closeness that you will all want to be part of in the future.
Obviously I would appreciate any and all feedback from themost important people in all of this, and that is you, the membership. With this in mind, on Saturday 24 October 2015, inconjunction with the 41 Club and Tangent International half yearlymeeting, we are thinking of holding our own half yearly meetingfor Tangent GB&I in Birmingham, thus giving members a chanceto get together and air their views.
As I said in my speech to become VP at Bournemouth, some ofour great successes are the seven regional lunches, and I wouldlove to see you there. Together with my fabulous ABOTS team, Iwill be putting on two events – actually I think they will be doingall the hard work, but it’s the Round Table family that has givenme this brilliant group of friends. Please do join us!

At a ‘Let Friendship Continue’ evening, organised by Farnborough
(Kent) Tangent on 30th October there were plenty of friends from
Bromley Tangent, ex-Farnborough Circle and Tangent members who
have moved away, plus groups of ex-Circlers from Petts Wood and
Beckenham.
Forty-six ladies enjoyed a wonderful evening of friendship, good
food and fun. They were entertained by the brilliant magic of Colin
Perrotton, a member of the Magic Circle.
Chairman, Penny Denby, welcomed the guests and said she hoped
this would be the first of many similar get-togethers – and before
the evening was over ex-Circlers from Petts Wood had offered to
organise another gathering in Bromley early in 2015.
Following the event Penny, Ann Cummings, Farnborough’s
Secretary, and member Jackie Mason met up with Louise Sadler,
Chairman of Bromley Tangent, and members Jane Waldeck and
Lindsay Hinds at the South East Regional Luncheon in Southampton
and as if that wasn’t enough they spent the evening at the Bugle
Inn in Hamble – well, there is never enough time to catch up on
everything, is there?
Farnborough (Kent) Tangent has 18 members and meets twice a
month. They go away, together with partners, for a long weekend
twice a year – in the spring to Europe and the autumn in England.
Kenilworth Tangent Chairman, Helen Franklin welcomed National
President Janice O'Neill, to their 30th Anniversary Dinner on 21st
October. 56 members, old and new, attended a fun evening of
good food and great company. Some of the members had been
part of the club from the beginning! Everyone wore their pearls
and there was a cake also decorated with pearls.
Janice made a point of being introduced to all the members and
chatted to them about her role. The after dinner speaker was Rod
Chator, a freelance national journalist, who entertained us with
stories from his many years in the newspaper industry. The
evening was completed by Janice who made us really think about
the future of Tangent and what we can all do to ensure its success.
Editor’s note… a very special group. I spent my
Circling days with them and look where it has got
me. Farnborough, may you long continue to enjoy
your very special friendships!

Kenilworth celebrate with President Janice
Since the last Tangent News I have attended 22 Club events including
Clacton on Sea’s Round Table Family Ball. Friendship evenings in
Downend, Pinner, Altrincham, Stowmarket, Daventry, Amersham,
Anniversary celebrations in Petersfield, Kenilworth, Gillingham and
Shaftesbury, Spalding where there have been several clubs
represented. I have been made welcome in so many places,
Winchester, Retford, Wallington and Carshalton, Burnham on Sea,
Rushden, Harpenden, Llwchwr, Chepstow, Mumbles and Thornbury.
I do hope I haven’t left anyone out. There has been so much laughter
but I think Mumbles win on having too much fun. And thank you to
Llwchwr Tangent, you know why!!
Halloween with Wallington and Carshalton was amazing, the food
was spectacular and we discovered one lady went to school with my
brother and played in our front room! Small world Lesley!
Thank you to the clubs who also looked after my husband so royally,
Gillingham and Shaftesbury and Clacton to name but a few. John
loved the bulbs from Spalding; I think they are beginning to pop up
now.
Now I’m into the final stage and I’ve joined up with Saltburn and also
Beverley Westwood this week. The home hosting was superb!

What a wonderful year it has been internationally for Tangent. TheCharter of Tangent Club International (TCI) was a significant event inMay 2014 and Tangent GB is proud to be a founder member alongside the Tangents from Cyprus, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
More countries are now in the process of joining TCI with the Charterof Finland Tangent taking place in April 2015, just a week before ourown National AGM. If you would like to come along and support theFinland charter then full details are on their website www.otfsagm.fi. I am also in discussions with a lady in the Ukraine with a view to startingthe first Tangent club there and you will have already heard about thepossibility of Tangent starting in Zambia from the last magazine so let’shope that this is the year it gets off the ground. With new clubs formingboth at home and abroad there is still lots of life left in Tangent yet!
The 1st AGM of TCI will take place in Cyprus over the weekend follow-ing our AGM and again if you would like to support TCI the website iswww.agm2015limassol.com. A number of UK members are alreadyregistered and some are making a holiday of it so why not join them- it will be a fantastic experience and an opportunity to meet like-minded ladies from other countries.
We will also be hosting the Half Yearly Meeting (HYM) for TCI on 24 Oc-tober 2015 in Birmingham and may hold our own HYM or a TangentGB get together on the same day. The website for bookings is not avail-able just yet but all will be revealed in ample time for you to join in.
I have had a fantastic year as IPP and IRO and will be sorry to leavethe National Executive in April but it is time for some new faces and Iwish all the candidates standing for posts this year every success,though it is a shame they can’t all win as they are all so enthusiastic.I know I will still catch up with many of you at Regional Lunches andhopefully at some international events in future so until then...

The flight is long and not for the faint hearted but so worth the effort. New
Zealand is an amazing country and the experience of those who we spoke to
before our visit was ‘you won’t be disappointed’ and we weren’t! Time
constraints meant that we were only able to visit part of the island, but we
enjoyed every moment. We overdosed on amazing sites; round each bend
was another breath taking view and in a country where if you see a couple of
cars ahead on the road you are free to explore without the stresses of grid
locked roads and parking night.
We giggled our way through the living arrangements with Dave and I
clambering a ladder each night to sleep over the driving cabin! However,
exploring the country in a camping van is a great experience. Sites are well
situated and appointed. They provided good facilities and we discovered that
other campers often donate goods to you as they finish their tours.
We booked a few visits; including whale watching and swimming with the
dolphins. The former was extremely moving as we got up very close to a
sperm whale and then experienced a pod of dolphins laying on a side show
under and around our boat! When we went to swim with dolphins we donned
our wet suits with good humour. Chris as ever looked great, the rest of us
looked less than glamourous and regrettably despite us getting in the sea the
Hector’s dolphins immediately took off! At Franz Josef we stayed in a rainfor-
est area campsite, took in a hot tub under the trees and then walked up to
the Glacier only a few miles away – a really awesome experience!
Many of the little towns we visited were very quiet and quite remote, so it was
a bit of a shock all round when we came upon 3 good friends who were on
the Pre-Conference Tour, only to find the rest of the gang eating lunch in a
bar! It really doesn’t matter where you are in the world, with the 4 Clubs, you
are always with friends and it was lovely to see Beth and Arnold Allen and
John and Rosemary Livingstone amongst the group!
Despite the distance there were about 200 people attending the 41 Club
International Half Yearly Conference. There were contingents from many of
the European countries and a substantial group from India and we enjoyed
renewing old friendships and making new ones. There were members from
all 4 of the clubs, despite this being a 41 Club event and we enjoyed an
evening chatting to an ex-pat who is trying to establish Round Table and
Ladies Circle in New Zealand. The New Zealanders were lovely hosts; they
were laid back, friendly and entertaining. Blenheim is in the heart of Marlbor-
ough country so there were plenty of opportunities to sample the famous
wines from the region… especially the Sauvignon Blanc which Chris and I
voted our favourite. We were treated to some traditional Maori singing and
dancing as well as to a less formal, but highly entertaining rendition by the
local 41ers.
Business conducted, banners exchanged and the banter kept going.
The essence of our organisations transcended the differences in cultures,
backgrounds and languages. Where else could you strike up a conversation
with a complete stranger, and find that you have so much in common? May
the fun and friendship ever continue to flow ….

My husband, Dave, is the International Officer for 41Club and has had
the privilege to support 41ers across the world. Work commitments have
prevented me from accompanying him very often, although we often play
host to 41ers from both the UK and abroad and they have all become
good friends. So I was very excited to be able to go with him to the
41Club International Half Yearly meeting in Blenheim, on the South Island
of New Zealand. We went with good friends Chris and Jim Smith (41
Club President). Our work and Club commitments meant that we couldn’t
join the pre-arranged Tours, so we decided to do a DIY tour…. sharing a
Camping Van! Now to do this you have to at least start out as good
friends and with a friendship of nearly 25 years behind us, we were in
good shape!
It is fair to say that we are not in the first flush of youth, but in our defence
we all have masses of energy, a well-developed sense of humour, a
shared sense of irony and love of the ridiculous, and a passion for the 4
Clubs. Nothing was going to dampen our enthusiasm!

My husband David (from Llandrindod 41Club) and I were
lucky enough to enjoy a terrific adventure to China recently,
including a trip up the Yangtze River and all the usual
tourist sights.
However, we had to go all the way to China to meet 9
Tangent and 41Club members from Tettenhall Tangent 322
who holiday together. We were delighted to meet them all,
a ready-made group of like-minded friends!
A Walk on THE Wall was an experience we shall never
forget, albeit in the smog!!
We are pleased to report that we are in contact, and
hopefully may see each other again at Tangent events.
