The Speak Easy CabaretDown some steps and through a room that looks just like a classic movie palace lobby is The Speak Easy Cabaret.

The Cabaret hosts oustanding entertainers in a close-up, intimate setting. This month will feature Chazzy Green, the master of the sax, on Saturday, April 20.

You will want to see the whole Deco Art Deco Building, too. It’s an architectural treasure that’s filled with antique treasures.

The first floor is a museum and shop called It’s Showtime with a focus on movie memorabilia, but also including a huge collection of other antiques.

The penthouse is home to an exhibition kitchen. And it’s a great place for the cooking demonstrations that it regularly hosts.

And this month the Chefs Kitchen will welcome special guest chef Jerico Hernandez on the 22nd.

All About AprilThe ArtsThe first Thursday of each month is a great start for the area’s arts activities and events. That’s when Downtown San Pedro hosts its monthly Art Walk. Galleries and studios are open, there’s entertainment, and restaurants offer specials. It begins around 6 p.m. and is in the area between 4th and 9th Streets and Palos Verdes Street and Pacific Avenue. Visit the San Pedro Art Association’s First Thursday Gallery at 437 W. 6th Street. There’s a free tour from the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, 390 W. 7th Street. Start your evening at the San Pedro Visitor Center, where you’ll see local art, 225 W. 6th Street, Downtown. www.1stThursday.com.

San Pedro’s local theater company, Little Fish Theatre, has great shows. It’s also the organization that produces the annual Shakespeare by the Sea series.

“The Country House” opens April 4 for a run through April 28. “Dead Accounts” runs from May 16-June 9, and the side-splitting “The Nerd” will be running from July 3-28. And shows continue throughout the year.

Little Fish Theatre is located at 777 S. Centre Street, Downtown.310-507-0269, www.LittleFishTheatre.org.

This year’s Shakespeare by the Sea festival will present “The Comedy of Errors,” opening June 13 and “Henry V,” opening June 20. The plays are presented at a variety of locations throughout the area and admission is free. 310-217-7596, www.ShakespeareByTheSea.org.

DiningFood from around the worldSan Pedro Cafe, at 605 S. Pacific Avenue, is will well-known (and well-loved) for breakfast and lunch. And now it’s open for dinner with a full menu that includes Croatian specialties like cabbage rolls and cro-mo (Croatian mostaccioli). It’s right in the middle of Uptown Pacific Avenue and it’s well worth a visit. (You’ll find dinner there Thursday through Sunday.) www.WeLoveSPC.com.

It’s hard to know where to start with Babouch Moroccan Cuisine. It brings an exotic and international flair to fun. That’s where you’ll find belly dancing. There’s happy hour—and on Tuesdays it lasts all evening with drink and appetizer specials. The dinners are amazing with fresh, authentic ingredients masterfully prepared. It’s convenient to all of San Pedro and the Peninsula at 810 S. Gaffey Street, San Pedro. 310-831-0246, www.BabouchMoroccan.com.

If you love Mexican food, you’ll really love Jolly Burrito. It’s much more than burritos (but its burritos are amazing). It’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From carne asada and al pastor to pollo and vegetarian options, this is Mexican food prepared authentically and with great care. Dine-in or delivery are available. Jolly Burrito, 726 S. Pacific Avenue, Uptown. 310-832-9196, www.JollyBurrito.com.

NightlifeJazz, jazz, and more jazz at The Whale & Ale, 327 W. 7th Street. On Friday nights you can hear The Paul Gormley Trio, a world-class group of musicians who play traditional jazz that you’ll love. On Saturday nights, Markus Carlton plays beautiful jazz guitar in the pub. And Sundays from 5:30-7 p.m. you’ll enjoy the Hugh von Kleist Duo. Check it out at www.WhaleAndAle.com.

If you want a real San Pedro experience, definitely make it a point to visit God-mother’s Saloon at 301 W. 7th Street, on the corner of Centre Street, Downtown. Music many nights. Nice people and fun times every day and night. There’s late night fun at San Pedro Brew-ing Company. Fridays are game night. Pick out a game and show your skills. And every Saturday is late night music. Sometimes a live local band and sometimes a hot DJ. And always some of the best beers and really great food and service. It’s at 331 W. 6th Street, Downtown. Call 310-831-5663 or visit www.SanPedroBrewing.com.

Every Wednesday is Open Mic Night at the Red Men Wigwam Lodge at Pt. Fermin. The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. and musicians, comedians, and all other types of entertainment are welcomed. The Red Men Wigwam Lodge is located at 543 Shepard Street, Peninsula. Take a look at www.SPWigWam.org.

22nd Street Landing Seafood Grill and Bar has the best seafood in Southern California. Some would say it has the best views, too. Located right on Cabrillo Marina. Watch the sailboats against a magnificent Pacific sky with brilliant sunsets.

And here’s how to experience it in all its glory

Wayfarers Chapel: A Beautiful Sacred SpaceYou might think you’re in the mountains when you approach Wayfarers Chapel. It’s bounded by towering redwood trees. But you’ll know for sure you are in a sacred place.

Local members of the Swedenborgian Church had a dream nearly 100 years ago for a place on the Peninsula where travel-ers and others could stop, relax, and con-template the beauty of creation.

Lloyd Wright, son of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, joined the project and designed what is today considered a masterpiece of sacred construction.

In addition to the chapel (open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. except during wed-dings and certain other services), the 3.5-acre site includes a visitor center (open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.).

The chapel, which has appeared in many television shows and films, is avail-able for weddings, also.

It looms high over the Pacific Ocean, mountainous but with fields full of wildflowers this time of year. And hidden—or not so hidden—are a trove of wonderful places to discover.

Pt. Vicente Interpretive CenterHead up the road about two minutes and you’ll come upon a park overlooking the ocean. It’s home to the Pt. Vicente Inter-pretive Center, which presents the his-tory of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The center has exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the Peninsula and lots of information on Pacific gray whales, which migrate past the center between Alaska and Baja California. And you might catch a view of this annual migration any time between December and April.

The park welcomes picnics and the center is available for ocean view wed-dings.

Pt. Vicente LighthouseRight next door to the Pt. Vicente Interpretive Center is the Pt. Vicente Light, a working light-house that is vital to the safe passage of ships and boats through the Catalina Channel (the largest island you’ll see looking out to the Pacific from the Peninsula; you might see smaller Santa Barbara Island, too, on a clear evening).

The tower of the 67-foot-tall lighthouse and small museum are open to the public on the second Saturday of each month (except March, when it’s the first Saturday).

FRESHEST FISH—San Pedro’s SP Slip and one of the famous commercial fishing boats that sail from there year round. The painting is by Mario Mirkovich, owner of Mario’s Art Gallery at 2438 S. Western Avenue on the Peninsula. In addition to displaying his beautiful work, Mario, who started as a commercial artist in his native Croatia, teaches painting classes at his gallery.

Terranea ResortIf you’re going to build a resort on the most beautiful point on the California coast, it ought to be the very best. That’s what Terranea Resort is—the crown jewel of the Peninsula and the Golden State’s coast.

Terranea Resort sits above coastal bluffs with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean on 102 acres that include a renown 9-hole golf course, along with the amenities you’d expect from the only luxury destination resort on the Los Angeles coast.

And Terranea includes a variety of accommodation styles, including guest rooms and suites, but also spacious casitas and villas and The Bungalows at Terranea with a focus on wellness amenities.

The full-service spa and fitness center, along with four swimming pools let you be active while you’re relaxing in natural beauty.

Terranea is known for its ecological enrichment programs and kids’ club.

It’s also a favorite location for beautiful weddings.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Land ConservancySignificant parts of the Palos Verdes Peninsula are preserved and protected. And the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy preserves more than 1,600 acres of it. Visit their preserves for some of the best views of spring wildflowers and to learn all year about the natural history of the area.

San PedroSan Pedro is on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, too, and there are some great sights especially during the spring.

The Korean Bell of Friendship offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and coastline. It was dedicated in 1976 as a Bicenten-nial gift from the people of Korea and constructed on site by Korean craftsmen. The bell is in Angels Gate Park and is open daily from 7 a.m.-10 p.m.

The bell is rung for special events and all visitors have a chance to ring it on the first Saturday of each month at noon.Pt. Fermin Lighthouse was constructed in 1874 as a navigation aid and was lit until December 6, 1941. It also had lightkeepers who lived in the structure and lit it up every night.

Today the lighthouse is a museum that’s open for tours daily from 1-4 p.m.

Welcome Cruise PassengersGoing on a cruise? About to take a cruise? Just got off a cruise? You’re in luck. San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles happen to be two of the best things about cruising to or from the West Coast.

There is plenty to see and do in the area and it’s a great place to stay if you want to be convenient to all of Southern California and its attractions. So we hope you’ve planned on a few extra days before or after your cruise. (And if you’re traveling to join a cruise, you will want to consider arriving a day or more early; it just makes good sense—you don’t have to worry about travel delays and you can begin your voyage rested.)

For those driving in, the local hotels offer economical park and cruise packages that allow you to leave your car at the hotel for the duration of your cruise and stay a night or more before and/or after your cruise.Best Western Plus San Pedro Hotel & Suites111 S. By Desiree RewOn a street shared by art studios, San Pedro’s sole British restaurant and pub—The Whale & Ale—is the closest you will get to London without traveling across the pond. The Whale & Ale is San Pedro’s award-winning British pub, owned and run by Londoner Andrew Silber.

He describes his 110-seat restaurant, located at 327 W. 7th Street in San Pedro’s Historic Downtown, as possessing the “look of an upscale British club you would find in Suffolk or Cheshire or Herefordshire England.” The authentic touches of the establishment are not a fluke. Prior to his owner-ship, the initial design team went to England to recreate and pur-chase all the décor, which Mr. Silber described as “bold, daring, and expen-sive.”

Andrew Silber is not a neophyte to the food and restaurant field. His career spans 40 years, providing stellar dining expe-riences in London, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and even at Sony Pic-tures Entertain-ment in Culver City, California. Prior to acquiring The Whale & Ale in 1995, Mr. Silber once visited with an acquaintance for drinks. He couldn’t recall what he ate, but he remembers how the British Pub made him feel, “nostalgic.”

If you have the pleasure of dining at The Whale & Ale, you will not only remember the dark wood and brass furnishings, memorabilia, and the sense of enjoying a meal in the home of a friend, but you are also certain not to forget your feast.

In fact, you will think about that delightful meal for many days after. The menu is a concert of authentic British pub dishes and beers with local fare and brews. You will discover traditional English fish and chips prepared with filet of Atlantic Cod in beer batter and English

chips, Shepherd’s Pie comprised of ground roast leg of lamb, ground filet mignon, onions, peas, and carrots simmered in beef gravy and topped with brown mashed potatoes with a side of English peas.

Other British dishes include bangers and mash (grilled English pork sausages served with mashed potatoes). If you visit during lunch, you can order one of the British classic dishes or the Whale & Ale Burger for $10. Live music is on hand during dinner on a Friday or Saturday. If you make your way there on the first Thursday of the month, you will be swayed by the sounds of a five-piece Dixie Land jazz band.

Not to be out-done by the food, The Whale & Ale has a strong beer offering consisting of Boddingtons Pale Ale (Man-chester, England) Belhaven Scottish Ale, (Dunbar, Scotland) and the award-winning Guinness Draught (Dublin, Ireland), along with several local draft beers, bottled beers, and an impressive wine list.

Owner Andrew Silber jokingly says people either “love or hate” his one-of-a- kind British pub in San Pedro, but I pre-

dict you will love it for all the reasons he does. For more information about The Whale an Ale visit its website www.whaleandale.com. Desiree Rew is a freelance food and travel writer. She is a member of the Association of Food Journalists
