Security: Critical but elusive

Across the globe, the news reports on a seemingly endless parade of emerging

new threats that compromise both safety and peace of mind. From terror attacks

to pandemic diseases, the world has never seemed more insecure, challenged by

hazards that look unrecognisable, unpredictable, or unstoppable.

Whether the threat is from an explosive device, a deadly disease, or an illegal

narcotic, early detection has always been the first line of defence. Many of the

current systems designed to provide early warning rely on technology that is

decades old, with slow reaction times and high costs.

As security threats continue to mount, government officials are pushing for better

security standards, with regulations requiring upgraded equipment in some

transportation systems by as early as 2017.

The needs have never been more evident. A bombing earlier this year at Brussels

Airport showed the danger that explosive devices continue to pose to the

transportation sector. improved security is urgent, and the government is providing

significant funds to transforming transport security over the next five years.

An innovative early detection technology

now, a British company is using the emerging field of nanotechnology to bring

about a fundamental transformation in the science of early-warning sensors.

The breakthrough chemical detection technology from Canterbury-based Ancon

Technologies is poised to transform the level of security at airports and other high

risk areas through an advanced method for detecting traces of threat materials in

the atmosphere that is unmatched today.

This technological breakthrough, known as nanotechnology Molecular Tagging (nMT), offers the most sensitive detection of trace chemicals in the atmosphere to date. The applications are broad reaching, providing accurate detection of the presence of explosive materials, quick warning of radioactivity, and early diagnosis of disease and infection.

A breakthrough in detection

Ancon device can swiftly and reliably detect the presence of explosives or other threat materials through precise atmospheric readings that can measure down to the molecular level. This advantage makes Ancon security products 1,000 times more sensitive than market leaders.

detecting and analysing the content of gaseous vapours has been possible for decades, but its applications are limited by sensitivity, collection technology, and time. Standard techniques that detect trace elements in the atmosphere work primarily through indirect measurements that are converted into concentration levels.

nanotechnology Molecular Tagging is the only technology that directly detects concentration through an inventive process that tags and counts the elemental unit of mass – the single

molecule. This versatile technology

can be modified to meet the growing

needs for improved detection sensors

across a range of industries.

how nanotechnology Molecular Tagging works

nanotechnology Molecular Tagging

is a conceptually unique approach to

measuring and analysing the nature of

compounds present in trace amounts.

Most current real-time systems rely on

detectors that generate tiny electrical

currents which are then amplified

electronically to give a signal. nMT

works in a completely novel way by

attaching a specially generated nano-

sized tag to each molecule, increasing

its physical size by up to a billion times.

Molecules are then “visible” to lasers

and can be counted one by one.

This approach leads to many

advantages, including:

» Unprecedented sensitivities to see

and count individual molecules;

» Very low noise levels- enhancing the

ability to detect small concentrations

of target substances against high

concentrations of background trace

substances;

» A direct measurement of

concentration, doing away with the

need for amplification technology

that can skew results.

The result is a real-time, non-contact

airborne chemical detection system

that outpaces current technology

in many qualities, including costs,

sensitivity, and portability.

The technology can detect very small

amounts of explosives, chemical

weapons and other threat materials

such as radiation which could be

included in so-called “dirty bombs.”

With a step change in sensitivity,

airports can be more secure and early

warnings given of possible attack.

Ancon is poised to revolutionise security and healthcare worldwide

Versatile applications, limitless potential

With its advanced research programme. Ancon Technologies is targeting its product development towards the security and defence industries. There is, however, a wide range of opportunities for applications in fields such as healthcare.

The technology provides a method for rapid early diagnosis of diseases like lung cancer, tuberculosis, and potentially the ebola and Zika viruses, simply by checking a subject’s breath for chemical biomarkers that indicate the disease.

The path to market

After its launch in 2003 by founder dr Boris gorbunov, and the following appointments of managing director dr Robert Muir and director Wesley Baker, Ancon Technologies has developed its technology through grants, research funds, and partnerships. The company currently has ongoing contracts with the home Office and Ministry of defence through the innovative Research Council and Centre for defence enterprise whilst is bidding for numerous contracts with U.S. military to develop the next generation of products for detecting explosives, chemical weapons and trace amounts of radioactive substances.

This is only the beginning for Ancon Technologies, as it seeks to build a revenue model on licensing and supplying key components to “prime” defence and security suppliers. Furthermore, the company is looking to develop long-term partnerships with:

» The home Office

» The U.S. department of homeland Security

» The U.S. Transportation Security Authority

» Metropolitan and state police agencies

Ancon Technologies’ growth strategy includes:

» Targeting trade buyers by building strong, early relationships with regulators and other large-scale purchasers like the military and airports.

» Seeking joint development contracts with prime security equipment manufacturers and distributors.

Conclusion

As threats continue to develop, so must the means by which to combat them. Without fundamental improvements in technology, many of these vulnerabilities remain a threat to Britons and innocent citizens the world over. Ancon Technologies is poised to revolutionise security and healthcare worldwide with advanced products and technology that stand to disrupt the current marketplace while making the world a safer and healthier place.
