A note concerning a'original #omen and countr #ivesSwampy Cree Indians inhabited most of the northern part of this country. They

were scattered, i!in" in different paces, ne!er ha!in" a permanent abode, roamin" frompace to pace, continuay huntin" whereby they made their i!eihood. # number camefrom $or% &actory, Cumberand, 'oose (a%e, The )as, Chemawawin, *rand +apids anda o!er the surroundin" country. In those days n"ish ships were pyin" bac% and fortheach summer from the od country to $or% &actory, brin"in" merchandise for the countryat ar"e, at the same time brin"in" their empoyees, -hite men, most of them bein"sin"e many of them from the r%ney Isands, Scotand. It was common practice for

ships of the udsons ay Company saiin" from (ondon or )ymouth n"and to pic%up abe bodied men in the Scottish i"hands, the ebrides and the r%neys beforesaiin" to Canada. The men and merchandise was unoaded at $or% &actory from whereit was distributed in different districts inand where the udsons ay Company C4had stations and stores. These empoyees, -hite men, were distributed as we to these!arious stations. This bein" the case, the -hite men and the Swampy Cree were prettywe scattered throu"hout the northern part of the country. The -hite men and the 5ati!e6+ed 'en6 came in contact with each other pretty often.
