Under these conditions the detectors are adjusted to provide a perfect balance; that is, no output from the bridge. If an absorbing gas such as CO2 is admitted into the sample cell, it will absorb energy and therefore decrease the amount of energy falling on the measuring cell, resulting in a bridge unbalance which is directly proportional to the concentration of the selected gas. With this method, neither gas-filled reference cells nor mechanical choppers are required. The 8869 I.R. Analyzer can be supplied in a general purpose or explosion-proof housing. Both types of housing are rugged cast aluminum construction which allows reliable operation under adverse ambient conditions. The sensing unit electronic assembly incorporates some of the solid state electrical circuits:

− Current Regulator: supplies constant current to the thermistor cell bridge unit.

− Proportional Action temperature Controller: maintains the entire cell block at a constant temperature.

− Proportional Action Source controller: maintains the radiation received at the detector constant compensating for windows and cell fouling.

− Voltage-to-Current Converter/amplifier: its current output is transmitted to the analyser control unit.

The heart of the model 8869 Infrared Analyser is the Sensor Assembly, which consists of two helically-wound Nichrome wires which provide the I.R. source, a temperature-controlled sample cell through which the sample passes, and a detector housing consisting of two highly stable thermistor detectors (1 reference and 1 measuring) which are connected in opposite arms of a Wheatstone

bridge circuit. A narrow band-pass interference filter is located in front of the measuring thermistor . Assuming that the sample cell is filled with a non-absorbing gas such as ni trogen, al l of the radiation will reach the detector assembly. Only that portion of the radiation t r a n s m i t t e d b y t h e interference filter will fall on the measuring thermistor, while a part of the total radiation is reflected by the polished walls to the r e f e r e n c e

This option, in standard or explosion proof housing, is mounted on one side of the sensing unit and has two basic functions: it permits a check of cell and detector heaters by indicating the heater voltage and it protects the infrared source from hazard of excess power input.
