1. Analysis of Project

I will now examine the various areas that I will have to research to design my project. Thefirst part of this is to get a rough idea of the areas which I have to research. The sketch

shown below is a rough idea of the various elements of the project.

From the sketch, the areas which I have to research are:

1. Types of timber,

2. Previous telephone table designs,

3. Modern stylish designs,

4. Methods of joining,

5. Eco-Friendly materials,

6. Ergonomics,

7. Methods of finishing,

8. Drawer design,

9. Fittings.

2. Theoretical Investigation of Topic Areas

As shown above, I have to research various different topic areas. These are as follows:

I. Types of timber,

II. Previous telephone table designs,

III. Modern style,

IV. Methods of joining,

V. Environmental impact

VI. Ergonomics,

VII. Methods of finishing,

VIII. Drawer design,

IX. Fittings.

I. Types of Timber

For my design, a range of timbers are available to me. It is important that the correct timberis selected, so it has to meet the following requirements:

1. It must be strong enough to support weight of the user, plus a factor of safety of 3,

2. It must be easily machined,

3. It must not be warped or damaged,

4. It must not warp it placed near a radiator(important for a telephone table),

5. It must be attractive,

6. It must be environmentally sustainable.

I will now compare the properties of various soft and hard woods:

It has then been decided that the best timber to be used in my design is Oak.

II. Previous telephone table designs

I will now research common telephone table designs, which are available on the market

today.altough their principle is the same, there are various designs, in various styles.

The above is a telephone table in a simple classical design. It includes most of the functionalfeatures that are required in the brief, but the overall styling is not modern.

There are in addition to the above, problems with the design. These problems are mainlywith regards to the seating area and erogonimcs.the seat has no back support, and the tabletop is too high with respect to the height of the seat.

This is design is more atheistic than functional, a property I wish to avoid in my design. I willtherefore not be using all of the features of this design in my design.

The above design is the art deco style. It is more practical than the previous design, and it isan overall more ergonomical design. The unit has good storage space, and meets nearly allof the requirements in the brief.

Although it is an overall excellent design. It is not in the modern style. I will then use themain features of this design, but ignore the styling.

The above design is in the modern style. It consists of simple, clean lines which is morefunction orientated than aesthitic.the unit has good storage space, and meets most to therequirements in the brief, but the unit has poor ergonomics. I will therefore use this designfor styling more than function.

III. Modern Style

I will now look at modern styles and design features. I have found through my research of

previous designs, that telephone tables usually have a more traditional design style, which isthat cannot not used in my design. I will therefore examine modern furniture in general, aswell as researching a modern designer.

The above design is of a television stand. It is in modern style and has sleek clean lines. Thisis the style that I will use in my design.

Due to the fact that there are few telephone tables in the modern style, I will have the lookat design techniques used by modern designers. The designer I have chosen to research isGiorgettoGiugiaro.

GiorgettoGiugiaro is an Italian designer who was born in1938.altough he has mainly designed cars, his design havenot been limited to them. He has designed door handles, watches and furniture among other things. Throughout hiscareer, he has been at the cutting edge of modern design, designing cars like the BMW M1 and the DMC-12.

He has a belief that designs should be kept simple andfunctional, and that all the aspects of a design should be insync with each other.

He also has a belief in using materials such as titanium, stainless steel and glass.

The below are some examples of his work:

IV. Methods of Joining

In this part of my research and investigation i must take reference to not only the strengthrequirements of the design, but the timber type, environmental impact and style as well.

There will be various joining types, which I will now but into two categories:

1. Those which use timber only,

2. Those which require additional elements.

1. Those which use timber only

These methods of joining involve the use of only the timber of the unit. The below tablereviews various types of these:

It has then been decided that the best timber only joint is the wedged tenon joint

2. Those which require additional elements.

These methods of joining envolve materials other than the imber of the ubit itself.these caninclude, screws, nuts and bolts, plastics, etc. The below table reviews various types of these:

It has then been decided that the best joints which require extra parts are pocketscrews, dowel joints and distance blocks.

V. Environmental impact

One of the requiremnts for my design is that it is enviromentaly freidnly. to achieve this Iwill look at two areas:

1. Materials,

2. Finishes.

To reduce the environmental impact of my design,I will source irish grown oak,and willuse composite materials like MDF as much as possible.i will also use artificial leather andrecycled foam in my seat.

With regrads to finishes,I will use non toxic paint and use as little varnish as possible.i willalso use non cfc aerosels where applicable.

1. Wood finshes,

2. MDF finishes.
