  • The following works are mostly university projects, presented in a chronological order and categorized by typologies. As the use of computer programs was pro-hibited in our first two years of study, some of the following projects are presented with hand drawings - isograph pens, drawing pencils or collages. The desti-nation of the buildings is mostly residential, with variations, such as tourism and mixed-use. Restoration projects were included, with different proposed desti-nations.

The design process varies according to the context. Personally I consider the location as one of the most important aspects of a project. Whether it is remote or in the center of a city, the site is the starting point of the project. Also, the cultural heritage and local context must be kept in mind when designing a contemporary building - especially if it is in a his-torical center or a national park. I prefer projects with various constrains (lighting difficulties, small urban areas, building regulations etc.) because they represent a challenge. I believe that a succesful project is based on an intense theoretical and design study.

The majority of the projects presented in this portfo-lio were realized during school and were appreciated by the teaching staff. Some were even presented in the school exhibitions or on the faculty website.

"House in Nature" was the rst architecture project did in school. The location was an old tuff quarry, near Timisoara. As a prime exercise, the students were asked to think of a strategy for a landscape recovery of the quarry and to create an alternative "urban" planning for a hypothetical community of artists, ecologists or, simply put, nature-lovers. Our teams proposal was, on one hand, to create systemized terraces from the slope and, on the other, to create a poll of interest for the community which would consist of a lake and an outdoor amphitheatre in the middle of the existing quarry. The next step of the project was to individually design a house for a family, considering the landscape and its natural surroundings. The chosen site for this project was on one of the terraces. While designing the house, several factors were kept in mind - the relationship with the exterior, blending in with the topography and several other key-elements, such as a pool, an organic "forest", or a remote and shaded courtyard at the entrance. It was a project designed with pleasure and perhaps that was showing at the end of the semester, when the project was selected in the "Top 10" and was featured in the school's exhibition.

    Dwelling in Sibiu

Context: school project, competitionStatus: unbuilt - theoreticalType: residentialYear: 2011

This project was a school project as well as an entry for the national competition among architec-ture schools, "CASA". The assignment was to design a dwelling at the edge of the historical center of Sibiu, near the third fortication wall. It was designed as a transition element between the old and the new city. Despite its compact volume, it has two facades, both having a grid generated by the facades of the nearby buildings. This enables a random window and material display - a reminder of Sibiu's organic medieval urban development. The materials used are copper and plastered panels in a ventilated system. The proportion of the copper and plaster differs on each side of the building according to which part of the city it is facing. The white plaster is a classic nishing material, while the copper symbolizes a contemporary touch, but still well grounded in the local building tradition. Copper has an organic character, changing its color from golden brown to green, thus allowing the building to settle in its surroundings over time. The playful facade is also an expression of the interior space, as the two triplexes are designed for young people. The gap between the two facades marks the entrance to the antique store on the ground oor. The tower has two roles: an observation deck and a "shelf" for old books. The store and the bookshop are meant to encourage the recycling of antiques and together they form a public space. The building works as a catalyst for a new genera-tion, aimed to revitalize the neighborhood, current-ly inhabited mostly by the elderly.

This project is based on a study of the Bega canal, Timisoara, which splits the town in two. Its initial purpose was industrial, functioning as a a transport route for barges. This oating house was designed using recycled shipping containers. Its target user is the underground artistic community, functioning also as an open air museum. The setting for this alternative house is in the former industrial area, now abandoned. Attention can be brought to these gray areas using this device, which is a mobile social and cultural attraction.

The project was realized for the architectural design class of the Timisoara Faculty of Architec-ture. The task was to realize a passive duplex house in one of Timisoara's suburbs. The local planning laws imposed several construction laws, such as a sloped roof and an alignment at a distance of six meters from the street. Apart from the urban planning laws, another challenge was to create a passive house. Thus, the concept for the volume of the house emerges. A simple, compact shaped was opted in order to reduce heating energy and loss. Also, the display of functions was done according to the same principle.

The project spanned three years. It started out as an architectural design project in the third year and it was nished in the sixth, with a technical project - drawings for the authorization phase.

Social housing in Romania, as well as in the majority of East European countries, is usually associated with conveyor-belt-apartments. This project tries to break the mentality and create different typologies of housing units conveyed in the same "box". The building itself tries to break the limits - it is more of an artistic object placed at the corner of a housing quarter.

As students, we were asked to create an economi-cally efcient housing block for a potential "shark" investor. The site was most inappropriate, as it is lied at the corner of a housing quarter - a less than ideal urban situation but, unfortunately, one that is very common in contemporary Romanian post-communist cities.

    Ground Floor

The building was designed as an opening box. It's "exterior", facing the street and other tall buildings, is a white wall, with a compact limit. As the building faces the smaller houses, its limits deconstruct. Thus, the box opens up, revealing its cheerful "interior". On this other side of the house, as opposed to the compact one, is a mosaic of colors, camouaging the windows and playing with the scale of the building. It is meant to reduce the illusion of an invasive object and to create an art object for the other neighboring houses to enjoy. The white wall is still kept in some places - its monotony and shaded windows create the illusion of a non-offensive construction. The nal image is that of a friendly building opening up to its neighbors.

    Mixed Use

The mixed use complex is located near Balcescu Square, in Timisoara. It embodies ofce areas, service facilities (shopping/restaurants), as well as a residential area. The concept was to arrange these functions not in a compact building, but in the form of an urban landscape. Thus, the plot is divided in two: the ofce and public area and the residential area (which, again, is divided in different zones according to the privacy level). The different heights of the building (or buildings) were determined after a light study of the plot and its surrounding buildings.

An important feature of the project is its landmark tower, located in the public "square" (the rst courtyard of the complex). It is a counterpart to other tall buildings of the city, including the nearby church. It was designed as a social attractor, with its panoramic view of the city. Also, it has a secondary function for the sports enthusiasts: a climbing tower. This square is also meant to provide an entertain-ment area for the neighborhood, as it has wooden terraces for sitting, covering the ramp for the parking area of the underground level. Also there are several restaurants or IT shops targeting the young generation at the ground oor. The other "square" is located in the residential area and is more private, belonging to the residents. The other courtyards on the southern side of the plot are private and are connected to the ground level apartments, or houses.

Baile Herculane (Herculane Baths) is one of Romania's most important historical wellness resorts. It was founded during the Roman Empire period and it is named after Hercules who is said to have come to this valley for resting and bathing. Also, during this time, Emperor Marcus Aurelius is said to have visited the baths. The popularity of the resort grew during the Nineteenth Century. It was a glamorous destina-tion, rivaling with Karlovy Vary or Baden Baden. Various personalities, such as Goethe, Hans Christian Andersen or even Emperor Franz Joseph, came to this place. During its peak, the Casino was built (according to historical informa-tion, in 1862) in an Austrian-baroque style, by architect Wilhelm Daderer. The building becomes a landmark for the resort and it is a testimony to the market demand for casino gambling tourism. In the present, the building of the casino is not functional. It hosts a restaurant in the right wing, while the main hall, once a cinema and theatre, is now closed. The current project proposal was realized for the restoration class of the Timisoara Architecture Faculty in collaboration with the current owner, who wishes to restore the building to its initial glory.

    Restoration

Groung oor and mezzanine oor plans - demolitions: the theoretical study showed the original and valuable building parts, as well as the interventions done during the communist period, some of which were invasive and non coherent to the existing historical building.

Ground oor and mezzanine oor plans - new compartment walls: the proposed new functions and spatial designs are meant to enhance the architecture of the historical building. The materials used are non invasive and all the new interventions can be removed without harming the original structure.

In order to maintain the local spirit, the restoration project also involves a conversion. Since the gambling industry has fallen in the region, the new function must correspond to the current market demand. In the present, tourists come here for the thermal baths which help in healing and therapy. Because this region already has a tradition in chiropractic therapy, the proposed new main function is a school for chiropractors. The estern wing, which currently functions as a restaurant, can be transformed in a treatment area for tourists or sportsmen, such as local mountaineers. This would also function as a practice area for students and teachers alike.

Church of Saint Gregory The Great(Chiesa di San Gregorio Magno)San Gregorio, LAquila, Abruzzo

    San Gregorio Magno

San Gregorio Magno is the main church of the village of San Gregorio, near L'Aquila, in the central region of Italy, Abruzzo. In 2009 there was an earthquake which struck this area killing more than 300 people and leaving thousands homeless. The historical centre of L'Aquila was severely damaged. Likewise, the village of San Gregorio was affected - its church and main square were 80-90% destroyed.

There have been many proposals for the reconstruction of San Gregorio Magno Church. For a community of only 500 people, the church is very valuable. It is also notable for its history. The nave dates back to the 6th century and i t was extended with an apse later on in the 7th century. The two aisles were added during the 18th and 19th centuries, changing the initial structural system - a reason for its collapse. A nal interven-tion on the facade was done in the 20th century.

    San Gregorio MagnoRestoration

  • The restoration of this church consisted in a design exercise of reinterpreting the initial structure. Instead of rebuilding it, the strategy was to suggest its historical development, which suggested the need of space and expansion. Thus, instead of recreating a (false) basilica section, we opted for a unitary A-framed roof which would encompass the nave and two aisles. The interior space would be minimally altered - the pavement after the earthquake would remain untouched, showing all of the church's transfor-mations, including its collapse. The three spaces would be suggested by hanging perforated metal sheets, the central one having a print of the original painting. The former columns would be reinterpreted using hanging ghost-like lightning objects. The proposed envelope of the building is a metal structure with a ventilated system nished with travertine plates. The new structure would not touch the old one - the limit between them would be a light "ribbon". The existing remains of the church, including the altar, would be restored in their initial state.

    Una metafora per il restauro

The publication is the result of an exercise done during the restoration class of La Sapienza Univer-sity in Rome, coordinated by architect Tancredi Carunchio. The task was to restore several small ceramic pots which the professor would "acciden-tally" drop to the ground while handing them to the students individually. Each would decide, based on his or her theoretical studies, the best way to restore the pot. The result was interesting. Some would leave the broken bits untouched, while others would restore it using various materials and giving it a new use. A few of the students even replaced it by recreating a 3D printed copy or by buying an identical one from the shop.

My approach was based on Cesare Brandi's denition of restoration: in order to restore the object, we rst must acknowledge it as a work of art. In this case, the pot was not an art piece since it was industrially produced. However, I considered it valuable because it symbolized my stay in Rome. Thus, I stitched the pieces back together using clay. I did not, however, take it with me back home - its past and future was in Italy. I left it in my rented room at the Romanian Academy for future tenants to decide its future use (ower pot/support for pens/garbage needed to be thrown away). I also left a letter explaining its history.

The location for this project is part of the nancial and administrative district, in the historical center. The functional distribution was a challenge, as the public records are administered by the county council as well as the town hall - two different public institutions. The general distribution of the destinations was resolved accordingly: the main public area (caf and conference area) are located at the ground oor, the town hall's public services, ofces and archive are located at the second level, while the city council's ofces (with a restricted public access) are reserved for the top oor. Another aspect of this project was the public image. A regular neo-classical facade was opted, to reect the importance and role of the institution. The inner public areas were also very important, where the attention was turned to open space plans and nishing details.

  • Architecture is more than just a building, as Lebbeus Woods might say. The quality of living should be an important matter for everyone, regardless of economy, social class, politics, religion or race. However, even if we consider ourselves equals at birth, the surrounding environment models our personality and shapes our path as we grow old. It is an inevitable factor, which we cannot control.

While we may shape over our private living space, the public one is, most of the time, dependent on politics or public administration - invariable factors over which we have not much control. But, then again, we could change local mentality and demand transparency from our politicians. At first, it may seem that in less corrupt countries these issues are not so pres-ent. However, if we look at our recent history - the Occupy movement - the need for shared public space obviously becomes a global issue. Urban laws and deci-sions regarding public space are matters concerning everyone!

The projects presented in this section of the portfo-lio are based on participation. They also tackle, sometimes with humor, the use and management of urban space and community values. They are based on theoret-ical studies and are directly linked to local adminis-trations, serving as critical responses to various situations.

At The Speaker (La vorbitor) The premise for this happening-type project was the administrative and political context: the recent interdiction by the authorities for protests and meetings in front of the opera house. Because this square has been part of the public memory as an "agora" ever since the Revolution, the authorities' decision contradicts the citizens' desires as well as the local spirit (prior to this workshop, the protest against the exploitation of shale gas using hydrau-lic fracturing was not approved in this location). The installation we proposed consisted in a series of three sitting objects for two people, used for one-on-one dialogues. For each object we invited a professional from one specic domain: an architect (a specialist in town planning), a lawyer (as a representative for the citizens) and an actor (as an entertainer). The people passing by were free to sit down and discuss with each one on several topics, by choice. To make things more interactive, several discussion topics were prepared for each object, based on previous discussions with passers-by. This exercise was inspired by London's "Speak-er's Corner" and it's role was to create a direct dialogue, not with the authorities, but with other professionals which are involved in the city's life and development. It's impact was even bigger than we initially thought, many pedestrians stopping by for discus-sions. The biggest surprise was when the mayor himself joined our happening! However, he preferred talking while standing.

Memory in Steps (Memorie in trepte) The steps in front of the Orthodox Cathedral and the balcony of the Opera house are the main representative sites of the Romanian Revolution - they are facing each other in Victoria Square. A current controversy was the restoration of the steps of the church which are associated with the martyrs' death in 1989, at a high budget. Our small intervention on the Opera house's travertine steps was a reminder of the degradation of other historical monuments in Victoria Square. For our "restoration" we used minimal means and tools (ad hoc action, wood from the workshop) and served as a critical response to the overly priced and (perhaps) not crucial restoration of the Cathedral steps. The result was a collage of existing travertine tiles and wooden planks. The colors of the materials blend perfectly - perhaps this is the reason for which the interven-tion is still present today. Although it was a fun exercise done by enthusiastic architecture students for a noble cause, we hope it is perceived also as warning sign for the neglected historical monuments of Timisoara and Romania.

The location was Victoria Square - a historical place, due to the Revolution which started here in 1989. During this workshop, several projects were developed by the participants together with their coordinators. As a participant, I have been engaged in two of them: La vorbitor (At The Speaker) and Memorie in trepte (Memory in Steps).

All the pictures belong to studioBASAR. This project was featured in several publications and blogs. For further references, please visit:http://www.studiobasar.ro/?p=4977&lang=enhttp://www.arhiforum.ro/agora/ateliere-publice-ti-misoara

    Radical Islands of Timisoara

Radical Island Urban Movement / The post communist Archipelago of Timisoara - organized by the Timisoara architecture annual A_TA 2014 and coordinated by Milano based architecture studio Parasite 2.0, the workshop was part of a larger international project involving Dopolavoro and Space Caviar.

It implied a theoretical study and participative process of the radical islands archipelago of post-communist Timisoara - based on the interna-tional theoretical Radical Islands Movement. During one week, the participants built a mobile device which was transported to Sinaia Square as a catalyst for participation. Following a series of discussions with the citizens on urban public space, the participants presented the conclusions at an A_TA 2014 conference. The results left the possibility of an open-end discussion and a continuity of the project both locally and interna-tionally.

Recently, the workshop project was selected for Adhocracy by DPR Barcelona. Also, it was published in several architecture and design magazines, including The Institute. All photographs belong to Parasite 2.0 and A_TA 2014.

  • As an architecture student, it is interesting getting involved in designing or supervising exhibitions. They represent an opportunity for collaboration with vari-ous professionals. It is a more conceptual approach to architecture and I am attracted by the multidisci-plinary aspect of the work involved.

Most of the projects presented in this section were realized during a summer Erasmus internship at Berlin based architecture office, Studio Miessen. I have also included a school project for a pavilion, as well as an exhibition I helped to set up - a project by Paris- based office, Encore Heureux. Furthermore, I mentioned an exhibition which I supervised: the 2014 edition of Spazi Aperti - an event organized by The Romanian Academy in Rome, involving foreign young international artists based in the city.

    Surexpositions

  • I have always been passionate about graphic arts. As a child, I took art lessons - painting and engraving. In high school I took art history classes as an extracur-ricular activity. I also continued studying charcoal and pencil drawing.

When I started architecture faculty, I changed my drawing style and began drawing more "technically". I've always loved using hand drawings and sketches for architecture projects. Further on, as the use of com-puter soon became necessary, I started studying graph-ic design. I took a class on history of graphic design in Timisoara and, recently, one in Rome.

My projects have always been appreciated. This sec-tions includes works ranging from interior to graphic design. Although I don't have a work experience as a graphic designer, I would love to be involved in this field.

The task of the competition was to create a proposal for a workshop space of the faculty. Our team's proposal was inspired by the sunset seen from the other side of the building. Because most of the design classes take place in the afternoon, we wanted to recreate the sunset in this workshop,

The paper written for the design class was on for The Nuclear Disarmament Campaign. Apart from the research, the layout design of the paper was also very important.

During an art workshop in Hungary, I realized the pencil drawing of the camp's magazine cover. It was later used in a photo collage by other participants for the nal image.

since it was on the eastern side and didn't have a particularly beautiful view. To make our concept more visible, we decided to draw a panoramic view of a Timisoara sunset on the western wall of the space. This would have been the view seen

from the workshop, if the wall hadn't existed in the rst place. Also, we decided to draw it upside down, as seen through a pin hole camera. Our team's proposal was the winner of the competition and, therefore, we realized the design.

    Wired - font exercises

    FONTS

The proposed of the new GNAM logo uses a classical font with a contemporary touch: a fading-away dotted background. The concept was to create an image which suggests its artworks, dating from the neo-classical period to contemporary one. Also, it offers a hint of artistic continuity. The two versions can be used variously for the outside and the inside of the museum.

  • As architects, we are faced with the task of present-ing our projects in the best possible way. We have various tools for that, including models, sketches, hand drawings, or realistic renders. Of course, it depends on the client and on the marketing style of the architect. Communicating a concept or an idea is very interesting to me. I have studied perspective and various drawing techniques as a child and a teenager. During universi-ty, I became interested in computer generated imagery. Thus, I began taking classes of digital modeling and rendering (3DS Max, VRay). I also experimented with modeling tools, such as Rhino and Grasshopper, or even animation.

I have been more involved with such programs, as my For this section I included an interior render. I also chose to show some hand drawings and pictures of models - including a presentational one.
