!The 13th annual Fish Fry is

always a great send-off for

the snowbirds. This year we

hope to have everyone join

us on Friday, April 25th for

this traditional event. The

event will begin at 5:00pm

for happy hour while fish

will be ready to go around

6:00pm. Price will be $15/

person. The “Piano Man”

will be here for the festivities

as well.

Both the Mexican fiesta and

Zorba the Greek events the

past month really turned out

to be memorable events. I

would like to thank our

maintenance staff on their

cooking duties for the fiesta.

Also I would like to thank

intermountain golf for do-

nating prizes for both of our

events. The winners of their

donation received a free cart

for a month. Winners of

that prize were Eddy & Dee

Reisch during the Mexican

Fiesta and Jay & Jeri Ber-

nardoni during Zorba the

Greek. I appreciate all the

work that Brian & JoAnn

Florence volunteered for

during the Zorba the Greek

including the authentic food.

Both March and April are

the busiest months of the

year for outside play as well

as member play. Please con-

sider this when scheduling

and cancelling tee times so

we can accommodate all the

members with an opportuni-

ty to play.

April is also a time when the

snowbirds head back up

north and back east. Please

check in with Linda to make

sure she has your current

email and forwarding ad-

dress.

After considering what I

saw when playing in Vegas

with the men‟s group, I

think our membership does

a great job seeding their

divots. This helps enable

fairway grass to grow back

3 times quicker than leav-

ing the divot bare. It

makes a big difference in

playing conditions.

The aerification schedule is

set for the Canyons for

June 23-25th while the

Palmer will be from June

30th-July 2nd. Overseed

schedule is set as well.

Canyons will be closed Sep-

tember 8th-22nd while

Palmer will be closed Sep-

tember 15th-29th.

ticutting the fairways.

All of these maintenance

practices help promote

the growth of Bermuda

grass. Warm tempera-

tures are the most im-

portant factor for Bermu-

da growth, but all of the

cultural practices men-

tioned above will help

speed up the process as

the temperatures warm.

Our main focus this time

of year is daily course con-

ditioning and preparation.

We are mowing heavily

trying to keep up with the

spring growth. We are

also doing our best to

keep up with the weeds

and detail work.

Its official: According to

local weather records this

has been the warmest me-

teorological winter (Dec.

2013-Feb. 2014) on rec-

ord. This seems to be the

case as we are seeing our

Bermuda grass beginning

to green up throughout

the golf course. This

could be a great year for

Bermuda growth and we

are taking advantage of

the early “green up” .

We have completed all of

our early spring aerating,

and have lowered the cut-

ting heights on all of the

mowers. We have been

aggressively grooming the

greens and will begin ver-

We will try to do a few

small landscape projects

on the Canyons course,

including some rock work

around 8 & 9 tee boxes.

The rocks are coming

from the right side of

#18 Canyons. Once the

rocks are removed this

will no longer be marked

“ground under repair”.

This landscape work

should make these tee

boxes appear clean and

will be great for erosion

control. The rocks to the

right of #10 tee box on

Canyons will be used in

the wash between 10 & 18

for erosion control pur-

poses. Take advantage of

this great spring weather.

GREENS GUY-TERRY DONNELLY

The courses are on their way to being in top condition for

the Roadrunner Member/Guest Tournament April 10-12.

Our transition from overseed into thriving Bermuda grass

is about 30 days ahead of schedule this year. Our winter

was mild and the 9:00 starting tee times helped with excess

wear on the grasses during the coldest part of the days.

The dormant roughs were cut down and much new Bermu-

da growth is visible. Where needed, the crew is doing spot

sodding around the course.

The crew is working on detail work around paths to im-

prove the general look.

Palmer Course

#1-2 Palmer: Power that have been made aware that the

word „maintenance‟ is misspelled on the sign between the

two holes.

#4 Palmer: The pond and waterfall right of the cart-path

going toward the tee area is being filled in and will be a dry

bed with rock and other landscape. The pond under and

to the left of the cart-path will be enlarged and become the

retaining pond for the stream along the left side boundary

of the hole. This work will not be complete until about

October 2014.

#12 Palmer: The rock boarder between the cart path and

the pond that includes the west end of the pond between

the sidewalk is complete. The aesthetics are good and the

rock will keep some unwanted traffic off the area. The

birds have already moved farther north into the pond and

away from the playing area.

#‟s 8,9,12-13,15-16: There will be cart path repair and

improvement done during the summer.

Canyons Course:

#4 Canyons: The hazard stakes have been moved closer

to the green. This is so that the always wet/muddy area

will be deemed in the hazard. There is a drain that does

not connect to any system in the area and getting the

water from watering the green and slope out of the low

area is difficult.

The area around the hole is on schedule to be aestheti-

cally improved with further landscaping.

#8 Canyons: Landscape material donated by the home-

owners on #18 Canyons is being used to improve aes-

thetics around the tee boxes.

The tall red stakes between the playing area and the

wash are not hazard stakes. They are there to mark

drain areas. There is no hazard on the right side of the

hole. Play any shot as it lies or under unplayable or lost

ball rules.

#10 Canyons: The work in the wash is to control erosion.

Scott has plans to clean and improve the aesthetics in

and around the shop area.

There are 30 employees, including Scott, Hector, and the

mechanics taking care of both courses.

A seperate social committee is desperately needed.

Please let Randy know if you are interested in working

on parties and activities for the club members.

Respectfully submitted,

T.J. Donnelly

First, we would like to say that we

do have the best 2 conditioned golf

courses in Mesquite. We greatly ap-

preciate how hard the maintenance

crew has worked this year. The

weather has had a great deal of influ-

ence with course conditions, but the

staff that Scott and Hector manage

are doing a fantastic job.

With that being said, we appreciate

the patience that Oasis members

have with cart path restrictions and

basic golf etiquette. We also under-

stand during busy times that rounds

become slower than what is accus-

tomed, however, we will always try

to get members the chance to play

even on the busiest days sometime

during the day.

As the days get longer, golf shop hours

will be extended. In March, golf shop

hours will be from 6:30am-6:00pm. We

do appreciate members signing up for

tournaments online. This is a fast, easy

way to sign up for Couples or Ladies

Day 24 hours/day. The goal is by Sep-

tember is to have a member only app

that can be utilized to check out the

latest news and ability to sign up for

tournaments right on your

smartphone.

With Roadrunner Member/Guest com-

ing up, we encourage all participants to

call in advance now for practice round

tee times. Guest rates are $65/Palmer

& $55 Canyons. The signup deadline

for the tournament has now passed.

The final spring demo day will be

this Friday, March 21st. Adams

Golf and Mizuno will be here 9am-

2pm to show off the latest product

lines. I recommend coming to try

the new Adams Tight Lies fairway

wood that is very similar to their

first ever shallow faced fairway

wood they developed in the mid to

late 1990‟s. Also, if you would like

to get fitted my a Mizuno techni-

cian, the very popular shaft opti-

mizer tool that Mizuno utilizes is

the best in the business. Please

stop by for a quick 15-minute fit-

ting.

Finally we would like to wish eve-

ryone good luck in the next few

weeks during club championships!

The ladies association has had a very

busy February & March. We had a

very successful “Me & Mine” Valen-

tine tournament on the Palmer

course. We had a total of 92 players

which was a great turnout for both

golf & lunch afterwards. OWGA

would like to thank Vicki Bishop,

Pat Donnelly, & Fay Schulz for vol-

unteering to help with the tourna-

ment itself.

The Member/Member was also a suc-

cessful event March 4th & 5th. We

had 3 competitive flights this year.

We would like to thank Ann DeBau-

fre, Lenora Hutchins, Judy Cole-

White, Tomata Edwards for their

hard work and also the several vol-

unteers to help with scoring. Con-

raised she will have the opportunity

to play in prestigious national junior

events this summer Good luck Ali!

The new officers for the 2014/2015

season were nominated and ratified

Mesquite Couples Tournament Series down to wire with final round coming up in April

The 5th leg of the Mesquite Couples Tourna-

ment series was held at the Palmer on Sunday,

March 16th. Format for the event was a sham-

ble. Front 9 score was a best ball while back 9

scoring counted both player‟s scores (net). Oa-

sis again had a strong showing having 4 of the

top 5 finishers.

Dick & Lona Wilson shot an amazing 60 net on

the back to back their 25 best ball score on the

front to win by 3 shots over Will & Jean Ven-

ski. This is Wilson‟s first ever win in Mesquite

Couples as they have never finished in the top

5 before. The win will catapult their overall

standing to 5th place.

Eddie & Allison Webb had the best front 9 of

any team shooting an amazing 11-under par

24. Will & Jean Venski played very well

shooting the 2nd best score of 62 on the back

(Wilsons‟). Strong showings by the teams

chasing the leaders has now narrowed the gap

between the first top 5 couples.

The couples champion this year will go down

to the last putt. Schulzs‟ lead shrunk to just 2

points with the one event remaining at Cones-

toga on Sunday, April 6th. Mathematically

any team within 18 points has a chance of win-

ning. So the remaining teams left with a

chance are Schulzs‟, Reeds‟, Venskis‟, Webbs‟,

and Wilsons‟.

The overall point standings between Sun City

and Oasis is very competitive. Currently Oa-

sis‟ lead stabilized this week even with 2 fewer

teams. Oasis & Conestoga matched each other

with 293 overall points during round 5. The

overall lead has Oasis leading 1,531-1,474.

In order for Conestoga to win, they must sweep

the top 8 positions during the final event.

Good luck to everyone playing at Conestoga!
