We Are All One in 2021 and Our Shrine Kids are number One! We are optimistically opening more as the new
year moves forward! Back on February 20th, Oasis Shriners hosted our first virtual Club and Unit Officer Orientation. Like so many things in the past year, we missed the fellowship of being with you in person, however the success of the virtual meeting was certainly noted. We believe it was beneficial to all and will surely be an option in the future for Nobles that have to travel from far distances or when challenges arise for a Noble that would not allow him to attend in person. May I, on behalf of the Divan and all that participated, congratulate and thank those Nobles that put in the work to
make sure the technology was up and running. We appreciate your efforts in putting on a successful meeting via the internet.
My travels this past month allowed me the privilege to present the 50 Year Service Award to Noble Ralph Dellinger. It was also a privilege to attend Piedmont Shrine Club Member Recognition Night and to install the officers of the Crowders Mountain Shrine Club.
On the first Saturday in March, we traveled to the Asheville area to be a part of the first ceremony of 2021. Hosted by the Land of the Sky Shrine Club, it was exciting to see 24 new Nobles from all over our 50-county jurisdiction be created and added to the Oasis Shriners family. I must give recognition to our Director of the Cast, Noble Allen Hardy, for his many hours of planning and flawless performance. In addition, I would like to recognize our First Ceremonial Master Noble Tim Farris, Ceremonial Aide Ron Mundy and all the Nobles and Ladies of Land of the Sky Shrine Club for their hospitality and many hours of planning. Looking forward to April 16th – 18th, the Oasis and Sudan Kids’ Weekend will take place at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, NC. Lady Kelly and I hope you have registered and will be joining us that weekend. This is a family event and will be in conjunction with Sudan Shriners. They are excited and have many registered, so come on Oasis, please join in. We will have a light hospitality room and suggested local attractions if you wish to go off campus. Oasis is staying steadfast on our Spring Ceremonial in Maggie Valley and parade in downtown Waynesville on the weekend of June 4th. We are meeting by zoom with both towns monthly to keep updated on current N.C. ordinances and planning so please stay tuned! If you have not purchased your beautiful Oasis Challenge coin, please see ad in this edition and contact Oasis office or your Divan Representative.
In closing, remember that “Life is a Journey…enjoy the Ride” in 2021!
Illustrious Sir Tommy Helms and Lady Kelly
An interview with Lady Rose Stanley “After John’s year as Potentate in 1997, he went back to school to become a chaplain. We never dreamed that Imp. Sir Al Madsen would ask John to be his Imperial Chaplain. We were able to travel with he and Jan, and we met so many wonderful people who are still our friends to this day.”
Lady’s Rose’s interview is a living testimony to the importance of being part of our Shrine Family. She named one lady after another there for her…to answer questions, “look out for me when we traveled,” give guidance, and advice.
“Lady Mary Richardson and I were very good friends. (PP James Richardson 1995) She called me ‘Baby Rose.’”
When asked if she had any advice for ladies on today’s Divan Line, Rose commented, “When you attend functions, visit every table, include everyone so they’ll feel like part of our family.” Lady Kelly Helms

on the Cover Get to know the 24 new nobles on page 5 and be sure to welcome them to Oasis.
Greetings Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Oasis. Well, we are coming out of the gate and starting to run the race now with a little bit of normalcy here
in 2021. I, for one have been able to receive both of my vaccinations for COVID-19 and encourage all of you who can to do so. I am hopeful and ready to see all my brothers and their ladies at an Oasis function soon.
Remember to keep up with all the latest changes and cancellations to the Oasis schedule sent by email. As we receive the latest updates, we will get them out to each of you as quickly as we can. Again, please check, or have someone check, your email and phone number(s) in Web-Fez to make sure your correct information is in our database. We are working to make sure everyone in Oasis is getting the most up to date information.
Speaking of functions, Oasis held a one-day ceremonial at the Land of the Sky Shrine Club in Asheville on March 6th. During that one day we obligated 24 new Nobles into the greatest fraternity ever known to man. These fine men learned of the greater good we offer the world. Congratulations to all who worked hard behind the scenes to host, put on the program and to receive more light. Please reach out to these new Nobles in your area and invite them to join a club or unit as things are starting to open.
If any of you know of anyone who would like to be obligated and join Oasis, our next opportunity to do that will be June 4th and 5th in Maggie Valley. Please get the word out now, so they can make arrangements to attend. If anyone has any questions about accommodations or events for these new Nobles and their Ladies, please contact Divan Nobles Tom Bridges, Tim Farris and Donnie Wrenn and they will be more that happy to assist you.
In the latest news from the Oasis office, we have requested all club and unit financial reports be
received by now and thank you for being timely. We are completing our yearly review and audit from an outside CPA firm before submitting our information to the IRS. Also, under Imperial by-laws we are sending them our yearly reports and records for 2020 to be reviewed and submitted by Imperial as required.
Oasis Staff and Divan are currently working on getting members who are able to receive 50-year pins and awards. With COVID taking up most of last year, Imperial and Oasis are running behind on getting these out to our eligible members. As things are opening, we will be getting these in the hands of our Nobles soon.
I talked in my last month’s article about Lady Edie Wilson being the first place winner of Shriners International Dromedary Award and receiving the Potentates Special Award of Honor. Lady Edie has taken our monthly newspaper to a whole new level and won the Dromedary Award ahead of 195 other Shrine Temples. The only bad thing about winning this coveted award is that under the rules of Imperial, Lady Edie and Oasis are not eligible to enter our newspaper this year. The good news is Oasis, and our Information Technology Team are eligible to enter as are our other forms of information sharing. Good luck and I know your product we see each month will do Oasis proud.
As I close, I am reminded of how short our time here is to do good work for others. I look at those close to us who have passed on to that temple not made with human hands. There are several good men that have not joined our great fraternity who have left a lasting impression on those around us.
One such man was Bobby Grant. Bobby was
never a Mason or Shriner but worked to give everything in life and his death to support Shriners Hospitals. Some of you knew Bobby from working with me to secure football uniforms and equipment for the Shrine Bowl back in 2015. During that time, Bobby had Champion donate over $300,000 in product and sponsorships. Bobby died a couple months ago and, in his death, requested that memorials be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Again, Bobby never was a Mason or Shriner, but loved Oasis and the friendships he made so much that his last request was to keep giving. We as Masons and Shriners must be that shining beacon of light for others to see every day. Please take note and govern yourselves accordingly.
Remember to thank GOD for all His glory, enjoy your family, stay safe, and be thankful every day for you never know who is watching. We are stronger together and we always will be. Hope to see you at Oasis soon. Until next month. YITFJohn G. Cable
Reminder All ads & articles for the May edition of the Desert Dust must be submitted to Edie Wilson at [email protected] by April 10.

All I Really need to Know I learned in KindergartenA few years ago, Robert Fulghum wrote “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”. He said that most of what he really needed to know about how to live and what to do and how to be, he learned in kindergarten.
What did he learn?
• Share everything, play fair, don’t hit people. • Put things back where you found them, clean up your own mess.• Don’t take things that aren’t yours. • Say you are sorry when you hurt somebody.• Also, he learned to wash your hands before you eat. Flush, • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. • Learn some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day—some.• When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hand and stick together.• And, LOOK! Everything you need to know is there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. We are reminded that no matter how old we are, when we go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and to stick together. Oh, and this is good: think of what a better world it would be if we all — the whole world — had cookies and milk about three o’ clock every afternoon and THEN lay down with our blankets for a nap!
John Stanley, P.M., P.P. is Chaplain of Oasis Shriners, Past Chaplain of SASA, and a Past Imperial Chaplain of Shriners International (appointed by Imperial Sir Al Madsen in 2012-13). Currently, he is Minister of Visitation of First Presbyterian-Gastonia. He can be reached at [email protected]

Fifty years of dedication to MasonryChief Rabban Tim Daniels presented Noble Robert Erwin his 50 year certificate and pin at a recent meeting at Gastonia Lodge #369. With the Master’s permission, Daniels presented him his award and requested all present who were members of Oasis to join him in the west of the altar for the presentation as well as the Master east of the altar. Noble Robert (Bob) began his Shrine journey October 1970. Oasis Oriental Guide Noble Chris Hall was also present and served as our photographer. The Senior Deacon of the lodge escorted Noble and Brother Bob to the alter. Thanks.
Noble Ralph F. Dellinger was created a Shriner in 1969. Ill. Sir Tommy Helms recently awarded him his 50 year certificate and pin. Noble Dellinger is the father of Noble Freddie Dellinger, Captain of the Wagoneers.

Generosity
Since 1922, Shriner Hospitals for children has helped 1.4 million children. In 2019 alone it has cared for 145,608 children, up to age 18, and invested $38 million in research in 22 hospitals in U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Care is provided in orthopedics, neuromuscular injuries, burns, cleft lip and palate, and other needs by supportive teams that help the children thrive. All regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. All this happens thru the generosity of millions of people in all parts of the world.

Greetings Nobles and Ladies. I would like to thank each and every one of you who support our Annual Oasis Shrine Circus year after year.
As with pretty much everything else, our 2020 Shrine Circus was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on large group gatherings. Some may know or not know that our Circus is our largest fundraising event at Oasis. With it being a “Temple fund raising event,” all proceeds are available to use for our operating expenses for the upcoming year. Our successful Circus allows us to cover our expenses but, more importantly, keep Oasis member dues from being increased on a regular basis. Although Imperial has increased our “per capital” tax on each member several times over the past few years, Oasis dues have not increased since the early 1990’s.
Here is a quick update on our efforts for our 2020 Circus that did not happen. We again contracted, for the 20th year, with Estell, Inc. (Shrine Services) to conduct our telemarketing efforts for our entire jurisdiction. Their managers and employees have spent countless hours in their efforts to professionally represent Oasis in their customer contacts. Many of their calls are repeat donors who have been supporting Oasis Temple thru the Circus for many years. We were delayed a month from our normal April 1st start date on telemarketing due to the suspension of all fund raisers from our NC Grand Master. Around the second week of May we were given the go-ahead and Shrine Services began doing what they do best.
A misconception many people have is that we are selling Circus tickets thru our telemarketers. Actually, our script simply informs people of what Oasis Shriners is about and asks for their support. In return, for their donation they receive Circus tickets.
In August when it became evident that we would need to cancel the Circus, several
discussions and options were considered after which your Divan made the decision to continue the telemarketing campaign with a change in our script. Earlier donors were notified that the Circus was cancelled but when the pandemic was over, Oasis Shriners would still be needing their support. Everyone was given an opportunity for a refund and, to my knowledge, not one person or business asked for their money back.
With that being said…we closed out our telemarketing the first week of October with a net profit of $150,460. This amount far exceeded any projections we had earlier with the year’s current events.
Our plans for 2021 are well under way. Contracts are being signed and we are anticipating an even more successful Circus event. October 6th we will have two outdoor performances at Hickory Crawdads Stadium in Hickory. October 8th and 9th we will be back at Cabarrus Arena in Concord. Jody Jordan, owner of Jordan World Circus, is promising a great combination of entertainment as he always does.
The world renowned, Award Winning, Oasis Clown Unit will be again performing during the Circus and again facilitating the “Rodney Morgan Memorial Bicycle Give Away.” More info will be forth coming on how you personally can help them reach their goal of giving away 100 bikes this year. I encourage everyone who can to donate a bike.
We will restart our Circus Moms and Circus Dads program this year and more info will be coming out on it as well.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, want to donate, want to help or just want to go to the Circus.
As I always say, I have the best job on the Divan with the Circus and all it entails. I get to meet and interact with a lot of hardworking Shriners, their Ladies and local leaders while spreading our message and purpose in the communities across our jurisdiction.
I leave you with one question……WILL I SEE YOU AT THE CIRCUS???????

Spotlight on noble Howard KeyesHoward Keyes turns 90 on May 3. His Lady Shirley has shared some of Howard’s notable history with us beginning with the fact that their six children — three boys and three girls — are all military. After 21 ½ years of service, Howard retired from the US Army.
Noble Howard’s Shrine Journey “I was on a military assignment in Taipei Taiwan Republic of China as advisor to the Chinese Army. The Nile Temple was on the Potentate’s annual cruise and stopped over in Taipei having made prior arrangements with the Chinese to have a ceremonial on October 30, 1965. I was one of 48 candidates who were military and Department of Defense employees. That’s how it all began.”
Howard demitted from Nile Temple 111 in Seattle, Washington to become a member of Oasis Temple in May of 1981. Shortly thereafter he joined the Provost Guard Unit. Howard and Lady Shirley joined The Land of Sky Shrine Club and he was selected as Club president for two terms. He also served as Patient Coordinator and worked with Oasis Hospital Tripsters Unit for the Mountain Area. Several Divan appointments include Potentate’s assistant, assistant director, ambassador and trustee. Howard and Shirley are members of the Hendersonville Shrine Club. He expressed his thanks to Oasis Divan and staff—past and present—for their confidence and trust in him. Congratulations, Noble Howard, on a lifetime of achievement.

Red Fez Shrine Club prepares for abusy summerWith the start of a new year, the restrictions of 2020 still linger on into 2021. We pray the light is at the end of the tunnel with restrictions cause by COVID and a renewal of our fraternity with gatherings of family and fellowship.
In preparation for hopefully many events this year, the Red Fez Shrine Club held a major cleanup around the club property. On the brisk morning of Saturday, February 27th members from the Dune Cats, Lake Wylie Classic, Oasis Band, Oasis Divan, Provost Guard, shrine candidates, SOB and the Red Fez all pulled together to improve our club. New doors were installed on the restrooms to the pool house, the pool house was cleaned in preparation for renovations, and trees and shrubs were pruned to promote new growth for an exciting new season at the club. Over 22 people participated in what turned out to be a beautiful morning on the lake.
In addition to the work being done by our brothers and their spouses, the club is sponsoring another Boy Scout Eagle project. Jack Mintich is working on his Eagle Scout project with the support of his Boy Scout Troop 355. The scouts are adding two additional wheelchair accessible camp sites to our tent camping area. In addition to the camp sites, they will be planting shrubs between the camp site and the boat trailer parking area to improve privacy. It was a fantastic morning seeing and working with old friends and making new friends while working alongside the Boy Scouts who are our future Masons and Shriners. We hope to see you at one of our workdays, a meeting, or one of the events this year at the Red Fez Shrine Club. Thank you to those who participated for your help and support in keeping one of the oldest shrine clubs an active, viable club! Alan Marfin, Senior AdvisorDonnie Wrenn, President

The Great Wolf Lodge weekend is open to Nobles, their family and non Shriners. There will be some non-kid families attending like Lady Kelly and myself. If you have never been, you’ll find that it is actually fun for the adults as well.
We will have suggested off campus adult attractions such as indoor karting, indoor skydiving, local prison brewery etc. In addition, there will be a light hospitality room in conjunction with Sudan Shriners. This is an event we planned with Sudan a couple years ago. Hope to see you there. It’s time to get back together and have some fun!
An invitation from Ill. Sir Tommy Helms
