The Alpine Union School District, Alpine, CA, Board of Trustees is seeking a highly qualified superintendent of schools with an exceptionally strong background in elementary education and a good understanding of secondary education. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2016.
McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development, in collaboration with the California School Boards Association, has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the board of trustees in identifying and screening the candidates. The Qualifications The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The board has identified the following desired characteristics:
An ethical and proven leader who will provide sound leadership and management for the District while eliciting and respecting others’ points of view, thoughts, and opinions. Is an opened-minded listener who communicates effectively through written and spoken words, both to the greater community and to the District and to school site staff.
A problem-solver who will effectively find solutions to problems and will not sidestep issues or delay solutions. A critical and creative thinker who understands educational issues and best practices and who will make student-centered decisions for curriculum and instruction, leading to improved academic achievement for all students.
A leader who has a thorough understanding of educational business, finance and budget processes and has demonstrated the ability to maximize resources and manage expenses with a focus on meeting district goals. A leader who will implement long-range plans to benefit the District and its students. A leader who will build effective governance and administrative leadership teams and provide professional development and guidance the board and administrators.
A charismatic and dynamic individual who possesses high integrity, honesty, trustworthiness, good judgment and a sense of humor; is inspiring, instills trust, and is compassionate. A visionary for the future who has the ability to inspire others towards the fulfillment of that vision.
Additional information: A leader who has experience with district unification is
desirable. Salary is negotiable in the range of $200,000 based on
education, experience and other qualifications.
The community of Alpine is an
unincorporated, semi-rural area located
about 25 miles east of downtown San
Diego. The Alpine Union School District
has approximately 98 square miles and is
located in the foothills of the Cuyamaca
Mountains. The elevation within the
district ranges from 1,800 feet to 2,600
feet.
Downtown Alpine is a picturesque foothill
village with many attractive homes and
small ranches, surrounded by rolling hills.
The downtown area provides the
community with important commercial,
business, and recreational services.
The Alpine area has about 15,000
residents. Set in the “Back Country” of
eastern San Diego County, Alpine offers its
residents considerable open space that
enables residents to enjoy country living
without being isolated from the attractions
of urban San Diego. Regional universities,
including SDSU, UCSD, and USD are
located within driving distance of Alpine.
Many recreational and cultural activities
are easily available within San Diego
County.

*Spanish Immersion-Currently at Creekside Early Learning Center (kindergarten school) and Shadow Hills Elementary School. As the program grows another grade level will be added each year. The Spanish Immersion program will expand to the Middle School for the 2018-19 school year. Students have the opportunity to learn in two languages! In our 50/50 Immersion program, children spend half of the time with an English-speaking teacher and half of the time with a Spanish-speaking teacher. The goal of the program is for students to become bicultural, bilingual and academically proficient in two languages.
Upon graduation from eighth grade, AUSD students attend several high schools operated by Grossmont Union High School District.
Parents and community members support the AUSD schools through a variety of volunteer programs and community organizations including the art docent program, and strong links with the local business community and the Alpine Education Foundation.
The District is committed to the highest quality instructional program; a strong community expectation. There have been successful strategic planning efforts during the past decade, as well as continuous commitments to professional development and the use of best instructional practices.
From pre-school through eighth grade, AUSD teachers promote high academic achievement. Two of the District’s elementary schools have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools.
The Alpine Union School District Board of Trustees is
comprised of five elected officials that oversee the
budget and policies of the school district. Members of
the Board of Trustees are elected to four-year terms. The
Tenure of the Board Members ranges from 2-10 years.

A letter setting forth personal qualifications, experiences
and reasons for interest in the position
A current résumé
A completed application form
Reference letters, certificates and licenses, and academic
transcripts from colleges/universities indicating degree(s)
Candidates are asked not to contact board members directly. Any effort to do so may
eliminate them from consideration. Names of applicants will be held in strict confidence
whenever possible; however, McPherson & Jacobson complies with individual states’
Freedom of Information laws. In the final process, the school board may visit the district
where the candidate is employed, but will not proceed without the knowledge and consent
of the candidate.
