Seven years ago, after a long, trying day, Kudo Banz founder Amanda Naqvi’s3-year-old son came to her with a sad look on his face and said, “Mommy, I’m not a good listener.” Amanda could see the discouragement in his eyesand it broke her heart. “I vowed that day to change the way I parentedhim,” Amanda says. “I needed to find a way to parent him more positively.” Amanda realized that yelling, repetition and constant time outs – tools commonly used by parents - whether by design or out of frustration not only didn’t work, but made everyone unhappy.

The problem was that she couldn’t find any effective positive parenting tools. Sure, there were sticker charts and other reward systems, but a sticker chart wasn’t something you could readily bring with you to the grocery store. And what 3 year old could remember the good behavior he was being rewarded for after waiting hours to get home and receive it? The mobile apps were not much better- they tended to be nothing more than an online picture of a sticker chart. Amanda realized children needed something more – they needed something tangible and immediate and that could be given to them at home or on-the-go. She also wanted to make something that would avoid all of the negative parenting traps and build good behavior for the long term. And it had to be fun.

And so Kudo Banz, a sticker chart for your child’s wrist, was born. Simple, yet genius. Kids wear a colorful wristband with the numbers 1, 2 and 3 on it. For good behavior, they receive a fun-themed charm for their band called a “Kudo.” The Kudos provide immediate and positive feedback and the numbers make it easyfor the kids to see their progress. Amanda Naqvi, Founder & Creative Director

An entrepreneur practically since birth, Amanda is a natural at coming up with creative ideas and she thrives on bringing them to life. Whether she is designing a new product for her business or building an elaborate, home-made, backyard “carnival” for a simple playdate (yes, she does that!), Amanda brings a super-creative energy to everything she does.

Since 2008, she has successfully run her own company, PaperRamma which creates custom artwork for homes, nurseries and weddings. Her innovative client-designer partnership takes personalization to the next level and has grown an average of 70% per year.

Amanda’s biggest passion is being a good and loving mom to her three children.

Her combination of passion for parenting, uber creativity and business savvy is how Kudo Banz was born. Amanda created Kudo Banz because she wanted to be a better parent. She wanted her kids to listen – at home and on-the-go – without her resorting to all the negative methods like yelling and time-outs. Kudo Banz gave her a way to be more positive – to focus on what her children were doing right, instead of what they were doing wrong. Further, it was a tool she could use anywhere because it was always on their wrists. It was not just a reminder for them to keep up their progress, it was a reminder to her to stay positive and help them achieve their goals. It brought her family closer and made everyone happier.

Hamza Naqvi, Director of Business Development

Hamza, Amanda’s husband, has a degree in Finance and International Business. He enjoyed a successful career in the Hedge Fund industry for 10+ years.

Like Amanda, he too has a passion for positive parenting and innovative ideas. As Kudo Banz became more and more real, Hamza knew Amanda needed his dedicated support and expertise to make it happen. He left his hedge fund career and began working full-time with Amanda.

Hamza is a practical man who wouldn’t leave all the security of a corporate career if he didn’t fully believe in Kudo Banz; its mission, its value, and the positive impact it can make on families.

Millennial parents are at the core of our target market. These parents regard parenting as one of the most important priorities. Millennials place parenthood and marriage far above career and financial success.

4 In a report by Millennial Marketing, “Millennial As New Parents" parenting websites, online forums, parenting blogs and social media collectively gathered 71 percent of first and second place rankings-- far outranking parenting books and parenting magazines.

There is no rule book on parenting and now more than ever our target audience is seeking advice. “3 in 4 millennial parents are open to parenting content when seeking guidance on parenting topics.”

2 Millennial women (those born from 1981 to 1997) accounted for about eight-in-ten (82%) U.S. births in 2015. At the same time, Millennial make up 31% of the adult U.S. population, and just over a third (34%) of the U.S. workforce.

Parents of young children don’t have as much time to read as they used to. Parents are turning to parenting books less often. Kudo Banz is simple and something that

Case Study/ Facts

Confidence. Responsibility. Character. Isn’t that what every parent is working towards? Eight years ago when my son, Mickey, was just three years old he came to me and said “Mommy, I’m not a good listener”. It honestly broke my heart. How did I not see that all of the time outs, yelling and negative methods were breaking his confidence? I knew that day that I needed to find a better way to parent him. Like many first time parents, I was only beginning my parenting journey. I resorted to quick “shortcut” parenting methods. Problem was these same quick methods were changing who my child was meant to be. Ever since he was little, Mickey was a confident child who thrived on attention. This same attention often got him into trouble because he didn’t mind if it was positive or negative. Any attention was good to him. This got me into the habit of always yelling or giving out time outs for bad behavior. “Dont do that.” “No, No, No.” It seemed like I was hardly telling him “good job” because I was so wrapped up in telling him what he wasn’t supposed to do. Like many parents I was overwhelmed with the responsibility of raising an upstanding citizen. I worried that even the smallest “wrong” thing that he did needed to be corrected. (He didn’t share! Oh no, he’s going to grow up and not know how to care for others!) What I didn’t realize is that in order for him to learn he was good, smart and confident, I needed to build up the positive more than the negative. Otherwise I feared it would change who he was.

That famous day, it really hit me. Am I changing my son? Am I changing who he was really meant to be by always reinforcing the negative and not the positive? I refused to give in and let him grow up thinking he was a bad listener. I wanted to show him that he was good, smart, kind and most of all confident.

That’s the day I vowed to change the way I parented him. That’s the day I researched and researched but found nothing. And that’s also the week I came up with Kudo Banz.

A word from Mickey, age 10½When I was younger, I was still learning which things were good and which things I wasn’t supposed to do. Whenever I did something that looked like fun my mom would yell a few times and I never knew why. Sometimes I really liked what I was doing so I kept doing it but I always ended up in time-out. I never liked the punishments. They made me feel left out of what everyone else was doing. I loved when I was in the spotlight doing my own thing but all of the yelling made me feel guilty and frustrated.

But then something changed. I wasn’t completely sure at the moment but I get it now. One day my mom yelled less and started saying more things in a nicer way. It made me more motivated and confident to make sure my mom would keep saying these nice things.

I think this had a big impact on who I am today. Instead of being a shy and overwhelmed kid, I am the outgoing and confident kid I am today. (Maybe a little too confident from time to time!)
