The tunes in this book are essentially tunes I’ve played at English sessions. The majority of tunes are of English origin, although a few clearly are not. These versions are the ones I play, not necessarily the commonly played versions. I suspect these versions have been “absorbed” by me over the years from a variety of sources, combined with a little personal creativity and a lot of poor memory. Such is the nature of the beast! I had originally thought that I could download these tunes in ABC format from the Internet, and produce my own tune book with ease. I soon discovered that the available tunes were often versions that seemed odd to me, and many downloaded tunes contained writing errors too. In the end I decided it would be easier to start from scratch and write my own versions, and by and large this is what I have done. However, two tunes (*) were transcribed by Taz Tarry for the Village Music Project and are unaltered by me. Although the booklet was produced primarily to aid my own poor memory for tunes, I thought it might be worth producing a few extra copies for any interested friends. Hence these notes This tune book is also available from me on disk in ABC format for use with software such as ABC2WIN, which can be downloaded free of charge from the Internet. This programme allows you to edit the files and to play the tunes through the computer’s internal speaker, which is useful for non-readers. I hope you find a few tunes/versions that you like. Watch out for Volume Two! John Messenger 27th August 2004
