DISASTER IN JAMESTOWN
- CAUSES: (WHY DIDN’T THE COLONY WORK?)
1.) Settlers focused on finding gold and planting
tobacco and not on SURVIVAL !
2.) Settlers were not used to working hard
(Many came from rich, noble families who did not know
how to clear fields, plant crops, build shelter, etc.)
3.) Disease from infected river killed many.

ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES SPLIT VIRGINIA
As the Jamestown colony grew, an influx of poor indentured
servants migrated to the colony. Once their service ended,
white and black former indentured servants traveled to the
western to build their own homes and plantations.
Two societies came about:• Wealthy, land owning planter society located in the
eastern part of the colony.• Poor, black & white indentured servant class located
in the western section of the colony.
