Author's program note. It is Christmas Day, the most important day in the Christian calendar intowhich I was born nearly 66 years ago. As such I shall spend a happy portion of this special day withbeloved family and friends. But some time, important time, I shall do that which has made me richand will make me richer still. I shall, that is, tend my business by promoting it, for this is asnecessary on this blessed day as on any other day.

Where this will take place.

Want to get rich? Then create for yourself a space dedicated to one thing and one thing only, a spacewhere the focus is exclusively and solely on getting rich, where NOTHING else is ever allowed,tolerated, or accepted. I call this place the "space capsule", and I want to give you a brief butmind-altering tour.

Some 30 years ago, when I was just starting the business which has made me a multi-millionaire Isaw this space late one Friday afternoon. It was exactly what I'd been looking for for months; it wasbig enough to suit but not to overwhelm, perfectly located across the street from Harvard LawSchool and the storied Harvard Yard. In short it was the perfect location for who I am, where Ishould be and what I must do.

Thus I purchased it on the following Monday and long ago erased the mortgage, paid for in part bypayments (and tax deductions) from my home-based business therein situated. Since purchase, itsvalue has appreciated by over 1000% and is not done appreciating yet. I recommend such a wisepurchase for you, too; that is if you plan to get old and well-heeled. You do, don't you?

The decoration of such a place.

Remember the line from the old English nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Six pence", the line whichdirects you to the King's office, the counting house where he delighted to while away a lazyafternoon counting his money? This sapient sovereign knows something about money that you haveso far disregarded or never knew: the making of fortunes is expedited by being surrounded by andseeing as many manifestations of your wealth as possible. In other words, if you've got it, flaunt it.

But, you wail, you have no manifestations of wealth, nothing to flaunt, hardly even an idea of whatyou'd like to flaunt, even if you could. No problem. Take a dollar out of your impecunious walletand staple it to a piece of paper. Then post it where you can see it every day. That dollar, that singledollar, is the single step that begins the thousand mile journey to wealth.

Then regularly add to your gallery of wealth objects. Post copies of bounteous bank statements, orreceipts that show you are polishing off your mortgage, each payment another step to your goal.

In due course, you'll be posting evidence of much greater wealth and of the process that produces it.Thus, in my office, hub of my "space capsule", I am surrounded by things of consequence, includinga dozen Old Masters, masterpieces painted before 1800. Each one, and all the other treasures in thisroom, are tangible, beautiful evidence of successful promotions, of prospects identified, offers made,offers accepted, money in the bank. Each is tangible evidence of your success... which is constantly"in your face" to remind you of what you must still do to advance further and faster.

As I write it is 1:36 a.m. Eastern time. It is a night of howling winds and driven snow. I needed extrapadding against the gelid temperatures and the cold distractions playing themselves outside mywindow. This is where planning comes in. Write down everything you're going to need to do yoursignificant and necessary work. Then make sure you have it readily available and in sufficientquantity. When you are supposed to be marketing, you shouldn't be wasting precious time trying todiscover just where you left your bunny slippers.

The crucial mantra.

It is now time to "psych yourself up", to put your brain in the proper state and condition so it can doits essential work. You need a "mantra."

In Hinduism, a mantra is a sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation, or incantation, suchas an invocation of a god, a magic spell, or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mysticalpotentialities.

Here is the mantra I have written for you:

Promote!

When you are ready... promote./ When you are not... promote. When it rains... promote/ when it'sdry... promote. When you're rich... promote./ when you're not ... promote. When you feel like it...promote./ When you don't... promote!

The great thing about a mantra is that is can easily be customized for you. Thus,

"When my kids are screaming... promote/ When they're not... promote!" Get it?

Mantras are designed to put yourself in the place you need to be, your subconscious mind ready totake you there.

Your "power song."

Music is good for more, much more, than soothing the savage beast. It can give you the essentialbeat you must have to feel bright, energetic, motivated, a power player about to astonish the worldwith deeds of derring-do, or at least achieve today's promotion quota. (You do have one, don't you?).

Here's a good tune to get you up and active, alert, dauntless, ready to roll. It's "High Hopes";published in 1959, popularized by Frank Sinatra, it helped elect John F. Kennedy President of theUnited States. High hopes, indeed. You'll find it in any search engine. Here is its most famousstanza:

"Once there was a silly old ram/ Thought he'd punch a hole in a dam/ No one could make that ram,scram/ He kept butting that dam/... Just remember that ram/Oops there goes a billion kilowatt dam."

Set the day's objective.

If your goal is wealth, and if not why not, now's the moment to play the numbers game.

If you're marketing on line (you are, aren't you?) you need to set FOUR numbers: the number of adsyou need to email; the number of clicks from those ads; the number of prospects (atWorldprofit.com we call them "associates") from those clicks, and finally the number of sales anddollars therefrom. These 4 numbers are crucial and must be set and reached DAILY, Christmas ornot.

Now just do it!

Author's program note. The midnight hour was just striking 12. I should have been sleeping; untilthat moment had been sleeping. Instead, I bounded, yes literally leapt, out of my warm bed stackedhigh with a well stocked commissary of things necessary to get me through the night...

... extra blankets, a riot of pillows (why do most folks try to do with so few), the right books facedown where left the night before); the tasty morsels so allowable and necessary before the dawn,and the crumbs which upon waking I find in interesting places about my person....

I tell you, I shot up caterwauling, mauling one of the most beautiful songs ever written... "With aSong in My Heart." For all that my rendition was grossly off key, the smile behind it couldn't havebeen more authentic... more radiant. For you see, I was going to work... yes, work!

Wafted by my imperfect memory of one soaring song, I was about to experience happiness... ahappiness I have experienced so many times before in my life; the happiness, yes, the very joy andprivilege of going to -- work. Yes, work!

The song that came out of nowhere, a lyric masterpiece by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.

Written in 1929 for the Broadway show "Spring is Here", it defines, as well as any human can, theessence of what love is... that which keeps a song in your heart forever and a day. Of the many fineversions you'll find in any search engine, I like the one by Jane Froman. Here is a lover indeedwhose work was blissful and fulfilling... you can hear it in her beautiful voice. Stop a minute, findthis rendition and savor before going on. Lovely, isn't it? It's a grand song for setting just the righttone for going to the work so very important in your life, your current job, the one you are glad to dotoday.

"You don't know my work, buddy!"

The first person who read this article when it was still a draft, couldn't help literally bursting outwith a strong expostulation that went something like this, "Work blissful, huh? Work a privilege,huh? You don't know my job!!!" He all but added "Bah humbug" to his adamant declaration, strongmeat meant to say all that was needed on the subject, cackling like a wet hen. "Privilege indeed..."

Here's a person who doesn't see the benefit on his door step, the person who has failed to see justhow well off he is, even if the job is less regal and remunerative than Your Majesty deserves. It'stime to put all this in perspective; the better to show you just how very fortunate you are, whateverthe job, whatever its limitations and inadequacies.

Let's start with all the millions of our species who died in warfare of any kind, the great givers wecall patriots. I can assure you of just how glad they would be to be given the opportunity and chanceto do exactly what you do, but without the moans, groans and pervasive sense of outrage andirritation you carry daily to the work place, excoriated and derided for its inadequacies. They wouldsee what you cannot... that the work is good and purposeful, whatever you are doing, underwhatever circumstances you may be doing it.

Then consider the legions of people worldwide, including people in your very nation andneighborhood, who would gratefully snatch your unappreciated work from you, the people whowould do it faster, better, with a joyous outlook, and at half the wage, or even less. You worry about

these folks and what they are doing to you, but you won't do what they do and squeeze satisfactionfrom your work as they do; and so your condescension and disdain fuel their advance... and yourdecline. Thus, you learn the hard way: you are expendable, something you have always regarded asincredible, unthinkable, horrible... and yet a fact of your future existence and diminishing prosperity.

You demand everything from work... everything but your employer's well being.

Did you today think of your work in terms of how you could make it better? Or did you do what youusually do: carp about everything that's wrong with this employer; consigning this person and all hisworks to the very devil, his way lit by the bluest words in your colorful vocabulary? Let's see... Didyou say anything like this?

"The boss is an idiot. Here's why...."

" I can't believe we had to do (fill in the blank). That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

Or, "What a moron! And he's got an MBA! Yikes!"

Review your record. Were you helping your employer, her company and customers... or was thesum total of your involvement and commentary a mare's nest of acrimony, pettiness, and sustainedabuse of the people you should instead be supporting and maintaining, the people who aresupporting and maintaining you? In defense of even the worst work, the work menial, the bossunsupportive, your hopes and expectations bleak.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) If yours is truly the worst of work, congratulate yourself. From an undeniable bottom you canonly go up; always assuming, of course, that you are willing to do the necessary to advance.

2) Before you throw your current, dismaying work away, have you tried to improve yourcircumstances? Have you considered how from your boss' standpoint, your job could be improvedand your talents better used? The problem with most working people is that they have neverconsidered the work they do from their superiors' position; only from their own. Brainstorm ways inwhich your work could advance their interests. Have you actually ever done this? I think we bothknow the answer to that, don't we?

3) Have you ever looked, really looked at your business and your work within it and, mostimportant, what you could do to their advantage? Have you then drawn up an action agenda on whatshould be done... and your own role in the doing?

4) Do you have in place a plan for your work advancement? In other words, if you truly "hate" yourwork, have you considered how to use it as a stepping stone? Do you know the next step(s) beyondyour current situation, what the requirements are, whether there will soon be openings (or not) andwhat you will do to snag one for yourself? In short, have you studied the crucial matter of youradvancement with the care and meticulous methods of a scientist?

5) Just when do you plan to begin your advance? The correct answer better be "today" because anyother answer makes clear you aren't serious... if you were you'd never wait to escape the work yousay you detest.

Oh, yes, one more thing: did you do any of this with a song in your heart for this is not only the bestway to advance... but the only way.

Just ask 89 year old Oscar Epstein, the Commonwealth of Massachusettts' oldest employee. Forgoing on 64 years, he has worked for the Department of Transportation's Highway Division.

For many years rumors had been rife in Hollywood about a particular piece of furniture found inTara's home office, the place where, amongst so many scenes, Miss Ellen tells her husband about theillegitimate child fathered upon white-trash Emmy Slattery by Tara's randy, Yankee foreman, JonasWilkerson. The piece in question was the desk, the desk which in one way or another was accessedand used by Scarlet, Melanie and Ashley Wilkes, Gerald, Miss Ellen, etc. It was also the desk fromwhich Gerald, unhinged by his wife's death, eerily extracts a pair of diamond ear bobs, almost hislast remaining asset.

Speculation about the desk's contents.

Guessing just what the desk's contents may have been grew into a parlor game at every star-studdedsoiree. One said it was the long and exhaustive list of Leslie Howard's amours with complete phonenumbers, addresses and the dizzying list of their particular expertises and their ability to satisfy hisexacting requirements.

Others suggested Clark Gable's false teeth, the contours of which helped give him his instantlyrecognizable grin, so suggestive and impertinent. ( After all, a set had been lost during the greatburning of Atlanta scene.) Or the packet of salacious photographs taken by a crew member of thecomplete cast. He was fired. His photos abided.

And, of course, the idea was mooted that the ear bobs belonged to the adamant wife of David O.Selznick who hid them there, because he had mortgaged their every asset, often multiple times toproduce his masterpiece. But because the desk itself had been misplaced, maybe even sold (thosepesky debts again), no one could say with authority... until now.

Needle in the hay stack.

Enter your worker of wonders, your prestidigitator of renown, your man of protean energies,imaginations, inspirations and luck... and, yes, that would be me! And I did what every goodresearcher must do... I went to the movies, this time to watch, and in the middle of a beautifulafternoon at that, GWTW ("Gone with the Wind") all over again... and all over again to be sweptaway by a film that remains the chief of its ouevre, quite simply the single best film ever made. Andbecause I am and have been throughout my life the most loyal and tenacious of fans, the filmgranted my wish. Not for the object itself... that would be too easy; rather for the significant leadthat would deliver the object in question and burnish my already bright reputation as the discovererof dazzling discoveries.

Thus after I swept away the mandatory tears that flow at GWTW's conclusion, the moment whenScarlet comes to know, for the first time, that love is not about what you take... but what you givewithout stinting, without thought of gain or recompense... at this poignant moment of reverie andrecognition... I took my hunch and went to the UCLA film school and, with trepidation and fastbeating heart, asked to see their extensive records on the film, its production, script, actors,costumes, and so much more.

There, in a file simply marked "Tara, properties therein, Gerald O'Hara desk and contents" was thegrail (if not holy, at least venerable) ... a yellowed page in what turned out to be Scarlet's anythingbut copperplate hand... to be followed by over 200 such pages, dated and numbered, with her razorsharp observations on the business of business, a subject she was more than qualified to discuss...Here are just a few of her trenchant recommendations:

1) Surround yourself with the team of people every business owner needs to succeed... and rewardthem handsomely. It pains me today when I think of how much I relied on Mammy and how little Idid for her. It was Rhett after all who gave her the bright red petticoats she loved.

2) Don't fall in love with your partners or, far worse, your employees unless you have an author ofgenius at hand to tell the story and reap the profits. A love affair with Ashley Wilkes in real lifewould have been the very devil, disruption to business being just the beginning of the problem.

3) Know who your friends are and be good to them. Every business owner needs a friend or two tolet off steam with, share tragedies and triumphs. I had the best of these in Melanie Wilkes but let myown selfishness get in the way. I rue her passing every day and squirm when I think of how I treatedher. But she was a true lady... and never complained.

4) Honor the employees who give their time, loyalty and heart's blood to help you move up and up. Iam proud that young as I was, I didn't have to think twice about giving Pa's gold watch to Pork. Hewas the best, even to the extent that he filched from others to help feed me and my family. NoO'Hara ever forgets that.

5) Treat your employees with kindness and humanity. I am chagrined when I think that I gaveJohnny Gallagher, the supervisor of my lumber mill, "a free hand", knowing what he would do withit; working the convicts I employed to their very deaths. Ashley warned me... but I wouldn't listen.

6) Take time for charity and good works. No person can lead a balanced, worthy life withoutempathy; not just in words either. You might think that because my saintly mother died byperforming a charitable act, I'd be firmly opposed to any charitable act. However it is because ofwhat she did, when she did it, that made her a saint.

7) Work your investments... first by having and keeping a good trustee. Even when I was a youngwoman I was rich, though after Sherman swept through Atlanta on his punitive, punishing march tothe sea, it didn't seem so. However, my first husband Charles Hamilton and my second, FrankKennedy, were both wealthy, until the war. Luckily I had the best trustee, Charlie's uncle. He movedheaven and earth to preserve what I inherited. I hardly gave this a thought then; I'd advise you to bemore intelligent and informed.

8) Listen to the "old goats". They're often lonely and firmly believe they are helping when theydeliver their jeremiads and admonitions. Dr. Mead, Atlanta's physician of choice, was windy anddull but good hearted. I could have been kind. Melanie was. But then Melanie Wilkes was....(Editor's note. Here the manuscript seems smudged as if a tear had fallen on it.)

9) Don't worry about the hurtful criticisms and verbal brickbats thrown at you by people who are sooften jealous and envious of your success, whatever they may say to the contrary. They aim to hurt,but can only hurt if you let them. Never, ever respond in kind; as the Good Book says, gentle wordsturn away wrath.

If I'd known this way back when, I would have treated India Wilkes with more kindness. After all,she lost the love of her life in Charles Hamilton. She was entitled to more than my irritation andimpatience with her very presence.

10) Fight for love and loved ones. God knows, the world knows how I treated the great love of mylife, Rhett Butler; how I ignored him while pursuing the false chimera of Ashley Wilkes. I learnedthe hard way that you must fight and fight hard to keep the good people, the loving essential peoplein your life, for they are the best people of all. Rhett, when you read this, come home to me. After alltomorrow is another day and given good will and love, above all love, we can find happiness andserenity with each other... well, at least happiness....

Does any one, even a single one, open with an offer, any benefit at all, for pickingup the phone AT ONCE so that you can use your magic to make them better off and make yourselfmore money? Even a single one?

The plain, honest and horrifying truth is that you are sending out thousands, hundreds of thousandand over your business career, MILLIONS of marketing communications that aren't delivering thecustomers you must have to get rich. And it's all your fault...

Under the circumstances, with you doing so little to get yourprospects to respond, it is hardly surprising that they don't.

Cut your throat, or cut your losses and PROFIT. Your choice.

Recorded in (1971, it was what rock was allabout... attitude... edge... in your face... don't tread on me, maggot... stand back world and prepare tobe astonished, I've got the ticket to ride.

Now belt out the lyrics that pretty much summarize your entire Internet experience...

Now hear this... you're not just singing a tune... you're announcing the advent of the new regime...the regime where you're a successful online marketer, not just some luckless schlepper, kick-me signalways on your back side, the guy it's oh-so-easy to ridicule, disdain, and dismiss. What that means is not just setting the objective and teaching folks how to achieve it... butto keep each student's nose to the grindstone, keeping them focused, accepting absolutely noexcuses, including absolutely no "special pleading" where the candidate offers "reasons" why shedidn't do what she was pledged to do: following each and every step, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Your nudge is an essential part of your success team, and though I say it myself, I am the best nudgeon Earth, the least easy to deceive and hide from, unrelenting, never losing sight of the goal, moredetermined to see you successful than absolutely anyone except your mother. You'd beexceptionally lucky to work with me, and that's a fact.

So, I ask you. Who's helping you set goals, brainstorm means of reaching them, reviewing results tosee what worked and what didn't, and always ensuring you stay on track? Yeah, I thought so. For the last over 40 years now I've been telling my students, beating it into their often amazinglyresistant brains that "the list is the business, the business is the list."

How important is your list? Say there's a fire in your office. What would you grab first to save?Inventory? No, inventory is easily replaceable. Your computer? No worry here. Easily replaceableagain. (You do back up, don't you?) That picture of your mother-in-law; you know the one thatconfirms her near perfect resemblance to a rare genus of ancient lizard? (Please try to be serious.)

The correct answer, of course, is your list. It is essential, irreplaceable, unique. It's loss would becatastrophic, a body blow from which you might never recover. And that is why "the list is thebusiness, the business is the list." The $64,000 question just this: What did you do today to buildyour list and turn it into the huge money-making tool you require to make the big bucks you say youwant and haven't got a clue how to get. Self-deception, self-deceit, self-delusion. This is what you'respecializing in and your thread-bare results give ample testament about just how successful you'vebeen... and will always be. That better make you happy, because that, lamb chop, is what you'regoing to get.

4) How are your copywriting skills? Can you write the words that dance and thrill, the words thatmake people from Alabama to Beijing jump up and shout, causing even the deadest heart to beatfaster, faster, faster still? You'd better be, because otherwise you're in for a lifetime of significanceexpense, since top copywriters command top dollars... the dollars that come straight out of yourpocket; so sad for you but absolutely necessary if you expect to have ad copy that pulls the morelucrative response.

Of course knowing you, you'll try to conjure the magic words yourself; anything to save a penny.But that, as you'll quickly learn, just won't cut it... words without the wizard's legerdemain, withoutthe magic, produce dismal results... and that just won't do unless you like endless outflow anddriblets of income, few and far between. This is your certain fate when you turn down demonstratedexperts and attempt to do their crucial job yourself. Sucker.

5) Trying to build a money-making business off of "free"?
