9 - 11 - 2001 Amy’s Greenhouse was built to be a living memo-rial to Amy O’Doherty who perished at the age of 23 on September 11th, 2001 at the World Trade Center. Amy was the daughter of Geraldine Davie, a since retired Pre-K teacher at Barnard Ele-mentary School.

After the tragic day and during the shock and turmoil after the event, so many people sent flower arrangements and gifts to Amy’s family. The thoughtfulness was appreciated but Geraldine Davie quickly began to see that she wanted something more permanent and constructive for Amy’s memory. The concept of the greenhouse project evolved over time. The site now includes a gazebo, patio and commemorative signage.

Donations from corporations, including especially Cantor Fitzgerald; the New Ro-chelle school district; the Barnard PTA; Sammarco Stone & Supply, and private individuals; were used to fund the project. Amy’s mother campaigned for the project and continues to participate.

The Mission The mission of Amy’s Green-house and the greenhouse com-mittee is positive, constructive and for children. “Let Amy’s Spirit and love of children shape the values of all who come to learn and grow” is the motto of Amy’s Greenhouse.

This plaque was dedicated on the 5th anniversary of the Twin Tower tragedy. The mission statement for Amy’s Greenhouse is:

“On sunny days, as sunflowers grow, the buds track the journey of the sun from east to west. At night, the buds then return to their eastward orientation.

Once a bud blooms, the steam freezes and the sunflower faces an eastward direction to meet the sun as it rises. In the language of flowers, the sunflower promises power, warmth, and nourishment.

Let us promise on this day, to util-ize Amy’s Greenhouse as a place where Barnard children will bloom and the rays of knowledge will allow them to forever face the sun, head on.”

Garden Projects The committee attempts to schedule year round activities in the greenhouse that complement curriculum and enhance PTA events. Individual teachers and grade level departments also create activities.

Projects include: school-wide pumpkin project, ama-ryllis project, lettuce planting for the teacher apprecia-tion luncheon, shamrock seed project, incubation

project, Mother’s Day plant sale, avocado pro-ject, daffodil planting, and more.

Barnard Elementary The Barnard Early Childhood Center values what every member of our community brings to the educational process.

Utilizing the Reg-gio Emilia ap-proach to educat-ing young chil-dren, knowledge is constructed as a result of dynamic interactions be-tween the chil-dren, faculty, par-ents, administra-tion and the physical and social environments.

We strive to help children see the connections between learning and experiences and docu-ment these experiences in a bias-free commu-nity that is rich in diversity of people and thought.

The Amy’s Greenhouse project enjoys full support from the school district, administra-tion, Barnard PTA, parents and, especially, teachers.
