to use these devices as their way of communicating.

• This device “speaks” for a child• When activated by the push of
a button or using an adapted system, the child can expressively communicate one or more messages
• The touch pads can have printed words, line drawings, photos, textures, objects, or any combination of those to represent the contents of each recording

• When a child says a word and teachers provide a response, that child can start to attach meaning to the spoken word
• Some devices play the recorded natural speech of an individual other than the SGD user for voice output.
• Words, phrases or entire messages are recorded and stored onto the device for playback to be activated by the user
• Voice Output Devices using synthesized speech apply the phonetic rules of the language to translate the user’s message into voice output via a computerized speech engine

My thoughts…
I am a huge fan of voice output devices. This is a wonderful way for non-verbal
children to communicate daily with their teachers, peers, and families.
