Research Project: Safer cars for India Summary of all results

Conclusions

Conclusions: Adult Occupant protection

Bodyshell integrity is critical for the protection of occupants even in cars fitted with airbags. All cars selected by Global NCAP for the Research project showed unstable body shells in the NCAP crash test.Airbags requirement must come along with UN94 Frontal crash occupant protection. The Renault Kwid with driver airbag showed still a poor protection performance. Car manufacturers can produce new platforms and improve their structures in short time but they can also remove reinforcements in short time.

Body shell integrity is critical for the protection of occupants. Without adequate body shell strength

there is no point in fitting airbags.

General Conclusions - Recommendations

Global NCAP welcomes Indian government to adopt Regulation UN94 (frontal crash protection) as mandatory for all cars as from October 2017.

Car manufacturers do not have to wait for legislation to be fully applied in order to align all their production with UN94. Manufacturers that claim to use Global platforms like the CMF-A (Common Module Family-A from Renault-Nissan) should make sure that they are designed to meet UN minimum crash test standard in all markets.

Global NCAP welcomes the creation of BHARAT NCAP and recommends to perform the frontal crash test at 64km/h

Global NCAP and its members are ready to assist the Indian Government with technical support.

Coming up next…

Some models that could not be tested on time for this publication and the Renault Kwid (IV) with airbags will be published after August.

Thank you very much for your attention.
