DIARYMETROPOLITAN

There’s strange logic behind the naming of Delhi neighbourhoods.

Shakespeare says that thatwhich we call a rose by anyother name would smell assweet. The other day, I wentto Khichdipur in east Delhiand could not smell anykhichdi. What differencewould it have made if theplace were calledBiryanipur? But trust Delhinot to care for such existen-tial questions. The city is littered with localities thathave weirdly funny names.

I asked my rich friends inNew Friends Colony and theycouldn’t say why NFC iscalled so.

“We live in a spirit offriendliness perhaps…,” saidAnupama Ghosh, a resident there. If that’s thelogic, then are there moreshaadis at Shadipur? Are

people in Swastha Viharhealthier? Are rooftops inSunlight Colony decked withsolar panels? Do people inMaujpur, near Shahdara, have more mauj than the

population anywhere else? IsGole Market gole? Uhmm… itactually is.

Another curious name isthat of the Metro stationnear Seelampur, called

Welcome. I thought that itmight be Metro’s first everstation in Delhi, which is whythey named it so. I waswrong. Says Anuj Dayal ofDelhi Metro, “Shahdara isour first station, notWelcome, which is namedafter a colony calledWelcome.” Ouch!

But the Oscar for the mostcreative name goes to aneighbourhood called — holdyour breath — NasbandiColony. Around 20 years ago,the government, in a desper-ate attempt to control the population, drafted a policyawarding free plots in anNCR wasteland to anyonewho underwent a nasbandi(vasectomy). Around 5,000did and became citizens ofwhat came to be known asNasbandi Colony.

I, too, may consider a nasbandi but the free plotneeds to be in New FriendsColony.

PLAYING THE NAME GAME

There’s no end to shoe-sha here, even on the main roads ofConnaught Place. Only in Delhi!

Dear diary,

Some days ago, one ofmy friends and I went toa football coaching centre for selection. Iwas really excited asthis was the only day forme to show my talent, after years of regularpractice. We both stoodin front of the coach. Iprepared my mind forsome sports-relatedquestions and then forthe main trial. But to mysurprise, the coach’swords were — “withwhose reference?” Thissingle question raisedmany queries in mymind. He was taking tri-als only after his ques-tion was satisfactorilyanswered. But luckily,my friend had a contactdue to which we wereallowed to give a trial. We were selected whilesome other youngsterswere not, just becausethey did not have a contact. Hence, it is alsoimportant to make con-tacts in today’s world.

Dear diary,

I am an engineeringaspirant and hadapplied at many presti-gious institutes such asBITS, Pilani. I gave theapplication form to mydad for submission by

post, and he furthergave it to one of thehelpers in his office. The next day, I receiveda call; the personenquired if I was Bhavyaand had applied toBITS. I couldn’t getthings at first, but later,he explained that he hadfound my applicationletter near SafdarjungEnclave and was stand-ing near a bus stop. Hepolitely asked me to collect the letter fromhim. I understood thatthe helper must havedropped the letter bymistake and hesitated totell my dad about it. Iasked him to stay thereand decided to ask mydad to collect it, saying,“Thank you..ji.”” Maybehe heard something elseand replied, “phenk duji? (Should I throw thataway?)” I said immedi-ately, “Nahi..nahi..bahutbahut dhanywaadaapka!” He replied, “Koi nahi.” Finally, myletter was collected.Sometimes, Delhiites dodeeds that make yourealise what a thought-ful city it is! Delhi rocksand I’m sure it will continue to..

Dear diary,

The other day, my friendand I boarded a privatebus from Satya Niketanin the morning to go tocollege. It was plying onroute 511. We both tookthe front seat and started discussing aboutadmission procedures incollege. After some time, the bus driver startedspeeding. The passen-gers did not know why.Suddenly, I saw thatanother DTC bus on thesame route wasapproaching fast. Thedriver wanted to raceand win. He did not evenhalt at the bus stop. Atlast, when the bus wasfar enough, he appliedbrakes and my headbanged against an ironbar. Luckily, I was savedfrom falling off my seat. The passengers gotangry and started scolding him. The government should takestrict action againstsuch rash, reckless drivers who risk notonly their lives, but also those of the manyinnocent passengersand co-commuters thatcome their way.
