Shakespeare says that that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. The other day, I went to Khichdipur in east Delhi and could not smell any khichdi. What difference would it have made if the place were called Biryanipur? But trust Delhi not to care for such existen- tial questions. The city is littered with localities that have weirdly funny names. I asked my rich friends in New Friends Colony and they couldn’t say why NFC is called so. “We live in a spirit of friendliness perhaps…,” said Anupama Ghosh, a resident there. If that’s the logic, then are there more shaadis at Shadipur? Are people in Swastha Vihar healthier? Are rooftops in Sunlight Colony decked with solar panels? Do people in Maujpur, near Shahdara, have more mauj than the population anywhere else? Is Gole Market gole? Uhmm… it actually is. Another curious name is that of the Metro station near Seelampur, called Welcome. I thought that it might be Metro’s first ever station in Delhi, which is why they named it so. I was wrong. Says Anuj Dayal of Delhi Metro, “Shahdara is our first station, not Welcome, which is named after a colony called Welcome.” Ouch! But the Oscar for the most creative name goes to a neighbourhood called — hold your breath — Nasbandi Colony. Around 20 years ago, the government, in a desper- ate attempt to control the population, drafted a policy awarding free plots in an NCR wasteland to anyone who underwent a nasbandi (vasectomy). Around 5,000 did and became citizens of what came to be known as Nasbandi Colony. I, too, may consider a nasbandi but the free plot needs to be in New Friends Colony. I gave the application form to my dad for submission by post, and he further gave it to one of the helpers in his office. The next day, I received a call; the person enquired if I was Bhavya and had applied to BITS. I couldn’t get things at first, but later, he explained that he had found my application letter near Safdarjung Enclave and was stand- ing near a bus stop. He politely asked me to collect the letter from him. I understood that the helper must have dropped the letter by mistake and hesitated to tell my dad about it. I asked him to stay there and decided to ask my dad to collect it, saying, “Thank you..ji.”” Maybe he heard something else and replied, “phenk du ji? (Should I throw that away?)” I said immedi- ately, “Nahi..nahi..bahut bahut dhanywaad aapka!” He replied, “Koi nahi.” Finally, my letter was collected. It was plying on route 511. We both took the front seat and started discussing about admission procedures in college. After some time, the bus driver started speeding. The passen- gers did not know why. Suddenly, I saw that another DTC bus on the same route was approaching fast. The driver wanted to race and win. He did not even halt at the bus stop. At last, when the bus was far enough, he applied brakes and my head banged against an iron bar. Luckily, I was saved from falling off my seat. The passengers got angry and started scolding him. The government should take strict action against such rash, reckless drivers who risk not only their lives, but also those of the many innocent passengers and co-commuters that come their way. people in Swastha Viharhealthier? Are rooftops inSunlight Colony decked withsolar panels? Do people inMaujpur, near Shahdara, have more mauj than the

population anywhere else? IsGole Market gole? Uhmm… itactually is.

Another curious name isthat of the Metro stationnear Seelampur, called

Welcome. I thought that itmight be Metro’s first everstation in Delhi, which is whythey named it so. I waswrong. Says Anuj Dayal ofDelhi Metro, “Shahdara isour first station, notWelcome, which is namedafter a colony calledWelcome.” Ouch!

I, too, may consider a nasbandi but the free plotneeds to be in New FriendsColony.
