In the Image of God
Q. 42: How was man created?
A#er crea!ng the universe, God formed a man’s body out
of the dust of the earth. He then breathed life into the
body, crea!ng a soul that would never die. Together, that
soul and body formed the first human being, which God
called “Adam.”
The story of the Crea!on of the world and man is told in
the Book of Genesis. Scripture says that on the sixth day
God made all the animals. “Then God said, ‘Let us make
man in our image, a#er our likeness; and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of
the air, and over the ca%le, and over all the earth, and
over every creeping thing that creeps upon the
earth’” (Genesis 1:26). God gave man a body and a soul.
Like the animals, man has a body. And like the spiritual
angels, man has a spiritual mind to know his Creator, and
a spiritual will to love Him.
Q. 43: In what way was man created in the image and
likeness of God?
Man is created in the image and likeness of God in that
God gave man an immortal soul. Man’s soul, like God,
has the facul!es of consciousness, intellect, and free will.
Man’s body shares in the dignity of the image of God: “it
is a human body precisely because it is animated by a
spiritual soul” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 364).
Moreover, our bodies remind us of the power, wisdom,
and greatness of God in the perfec!on of their intricate
organiza!on and unity.
The body’s higher facul!es of physical consciousness,
memory, imagina!on, and emo!ons combine with the
facul!es of the soul, especially free will, to produce
authen!cally human acts. Man is able to be conscious and
to truly know, understand, and remember truth. He is thus
free to voluntarily and responsibly choose to do good and
avoid evil…
Q. 44: Is the soul directly created by God?
Yes, God personally and directly creates each soul and
infuses it into the body. We must believe that the human
race is descended from Adam and Eve, our first parents,
and that Adam’s and Eve’s souls were directly created
by God. Husbands and wives cooperate with God in the
forma!on of the human
body. But the soul,
which makes that body
a human being, is
directly created by God
and is given at the
moment of concep!on
within the mother’s
womb.
Pope Francis’ Inten!on for March
That Chris!an communi!es, especially those who are
persecuted, feel that they are close to Christ and have
their rights respected.
Bishop Ricken’s Inten!on for March
That parishes without a priest in our Diocese may be
blessed with an abundance of voca!ons to the priesthood.
A Family Perspec!ve
Jesus “was led by the Spirit in
the wilderness.” What is the
wilderness in your life to which
the Holy Spirit is leading you
this Lent? Perhaps there are
uncharted areas in your marriage
or family rela!onships. Spend this
Lent in your “wilderness” with
God’s work. Where is the Spirit
leading you this Lent?

Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast, that is, eat only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at other times during those two days. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one's 59th birthday.
