The Hume Veteran’s Cycling Club has been providing cy-cle racing for veteran aged cyclists for 16 years in and around the Hume and Goul-burn Valley region.
To celebrate its anni-versary of the inaugural race this year’s “Anniver-sary Handicap” was held on the club’s hardest course at Glenrowan. The 61km course leaves Glenrowan on fairly flat roads to Win-ton before heading into the hills taking in Lurg and Ry-an’s Creek before the run home back to Glenrowan with the final six kilometres all uphill right up to the fin-ish line.
The five man scratch bunch were chasing six minutes to ‘block’ with the lone limit rider 45 minutes ‘up the road’ and 18 more riders in between.
A few new and old re-newing faces were riding from the front of the race and this was the only part of the race that the back mark-ers didn’t see.
Scratch scorched around the hilly course swallowing all before them by the start of the climb back to the fin-ish line.
Bernie Grealy, returning after a broken hip found the group a bit too quick but the remaining four rid-ers stayed together to fight out for line honours.
Albury’s Terry Halpin put in a solid sprint in the final 100 metres as the hill kicks up harder to the finish line to hold off the challenges of Col Stokes, Rob Belsher and visiting Ballarat rider
Brett Caddy to secure his first win in cycle racing.
Col Stokes is starting to find his race legs again and ran home for second place with new member Rob Belsher also from Albury held on to fill the dais with Caddy just two seconds back in fourth.
The judges didn’t have to wait long before the main bunch were in view of the finish with the scratch rid-ers leading the way. 50 me-tres before the line Tully Lyster hit the front with Currie and Grealy hot on his wheel. The judges had their work cut out as only a couple of seconds covered the next 11 riders but Lys-ter was clearly the leader of the bunch sprint which also gave him the Fastest Time honours with an average speed of 39.85kph
Results: 1-Terry Halpin (18) 1.47.20 (33.82kph); 2-Colin Stokes (18); 3-Rob Belsher (18); 4-Brett Caddy (18); 5-Tully Lyster (scr); 6-Mark Curry (scr); 7-Math-ew Grealy (scr); 8-Laurie Lyster (6); 9-Tony Reeck-man (6); 10-Ian Strang (12).
Fastest Time: Tully Lyster (scr) 1.31.04 (39.85kph).
Next club race Sunday, April 1 at Wilby – 44km Handicap (10am start).
Race entries close Fri-day, March 30 with club handicapper Chris Wilkins, phone: (03) 5821 0232 b/hrs or (03) 5822 2747 a/hrs.
For membership details, enquiries or information phone Ian Grace (03) 5762 3288.
Member for Murray Val-ley, Tim McCurdy, dined with members of the Melbourne Victory Soc-cer Club, including soc-cer legend and Moomba Monarch Harry Kewell, at Parliament House last week.
Among those present were coach Jim Magilton
and club chairman An-thony Di Pietro.
“I encouraged them, when mapping out their regional tours and pro-motion, to consider Murray Valley as a fan-tastic destination,” Mr McCurdy said. “I told them we would be happy to host Harry and the team if the opportunity arose.”
Originally from Sydney, Harry, who will return to the United Kingdom for the soccer off season, has completed the full sweep of major sporting events while in Melbourne, in-cluding the AFL grand final, the Spring Racing Carnival, the Austral-ian Open tennis and the Grand Prix.
