A.     External Conditions Imposed on the Group Groups are subsystems of a larger system & therefore,

group’s behaviour is extracted from the organization to which it belongs.

(i) Organization Strategy The strategy the organization pursues influence the

power of various work groups ii) Authority Structure

Defines who reports to whom, who makes decisions, & what decisions individuals or group are empowered to make.

(iii) Formal Regulations Rules, procedures, policies, job descriptions & other

forms of regulations to standardize employee behaviour. (iv) Human Resource Selection Process(v) Performance Evaluation & Reward System(vi) Organization Culture (vii) Physical work setting influence the work group.

B.     Group Member Resources

A group’s potential level of performance is, to a large extent, dependent on the resources its members individually bring to the group. The two important resources are

Abilities & personality characteristics.

C. Group Structure (i)  Formal Leadership

(ii) Roles Identity – Role Perception & expectations, Role Conflict

(iii) Norms Formalized norms – Informal norms – things that one should or should not talk of Performance norms – Appearance norms – dictate the kind of clothing to wear

Social Arrangement norms - come from informal work groups;

GROUP PROCESS Refers to activities sentiments that

are shared among the group members: includes Communication – Conflict Management of relationship Managing Group Think, Group Shift

and Social facilitation effects
