Narrative of the Red River Expedition, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, 1870-1871, This is Colonel Garnet Joseph Wolseley's account of the expedition in 1870 to establish Canadian sovereignty at Red River. The expedition is described by Col. Wolseley as a police action in face of superior Aboriginal strength, Canada claimed to have a treaty for safe passage. Late in the winter of 1870, under the supervision of Simon James Dawson a number of representatives of Canada had contacted the Indian nations of north western Ontario assuring them that their property and civil rights would be respected by Canada and that Wolseley's expedition was on a mission of peace and friendship.
