Your Porsche history lesson for the month:
The 901
In September 1963, Porsche presented the Porsche 901 at the IAA in
Frankfurt as a successor to the Porsche 356.
Series production of the 901 began in September 1964.
When Porsche presented the vehicle at the Paris Motor Show in October
of that year, the French car manufacturer Peugeot objected to the model
designation. The reason: Peugeot had patented a three-digit type desig-
nation with a zero in the middle.
Porsche therefore renamed the 901 as the 911. This combination of num-
bers is the same as the emergency number in the USA and was therefore
already well known in this key market for Porsche. 82 units of the 901
were produced before the name change.

President’s message: Porsches and Pastries kicks off
Well another January has passed
by with the new “normal” mixed
bag of weather. The Tech Session
at Total Package Detailing was
well attended by 27 members.
The session was interesting and
timely with the sloppy, salty
roads we deal with during the
winter months. Matt’s passion
for detailing was clearly evident. Check out Todd’s
write-up on the event in this issue.
Our next event is the new member Meet and Greet on
Feb. 4 at the Graystone Ale House. This year we will
have a guest speaker from Kwik Trip talking about the
importance of Top Tier gasoline usage in our vehicles.
On Feb. 15, Dee and I will be hosting the season kick-off
of Porsches and Pastries from 10 a.m. to around 11 a.m.
at Babycakes in downtown Marquette MI. Following
that we will go down to the marina to watch some of
the Midnight Run sled dog teams cross the finish line.
RSVPs are not required but if you want to email just in
case you may drop by, feel free to drop me an email at
sstamnes@netnet.net.
New events are added regularly so check the website
often.
Our webmaster has begun to highlight the new events
right on the home page so you shouldn’t need to dig thru
the calendar to try and find what’s new.
Speaking of events, the Milwaukee Region is celebrating
their 60th Anniversary this year and have several events
planned all year long. The Milwaukee Region has ex-
tended an invitation to the Fox Valley Region member-
ship to attend these events. As they announce events,
they will be posted on the website calendar as well as
being published in the current Whaletales. If you have
the chance, why not attend an event with them? Reach-
ing out and attending events in other regions really
opens up your club membership as you get to meet and
mingle with other PCA members that you may not have
had a chance to meet otherwise. Watch the home page on
the website for announcements as new events are posted
to the region calendar.
Until next month, be safe!

New member meet and greet night at Graystone Ale House, Feb. 4
All members and guests are invited to join us on Tues-
day, Feb. 4, at Graystone Ale House in De Pere for a
casual dinner and a good time.
This is an annual special event which gives an
opportunity for new members and their significant
others to get to know other new FVR PCA members,
as well as old timers who have been around
the club for a while. We were all new members at
one point, and understand the importance of a
warm welcome – especially during a Wisconsin
winter!
Social time at 5 p.m. for cash bar. We will be seated for
dinner at 6:30 p.m. After we order off the Graystone’s
extensive menu for dinner, there will be a guest speaker
and drawing.
Separate bills will be provided by individual/
couple. We have a side room booked.
Graystone Ale House, 3711 Monroe Rd., DePere, Wis.
920-347-2727. (Google map link below)
Graystone Ale House is just 2 miles south
of 172, with easy access by taking the Monroe
Road exit south.
Please send your RSVP to Mary and Jim Haen at
mehaen@sbcglobal.net by Feb. 1 so we have a general
head count for adequate seating. Several of
our group have Cayennes and Macans or other
winter-road-worthy vehicles, so weather isn’t usually
an issue. If weather gets in your way after
you’ve RSVP’d, please err on the side of safety, it
is Wisconsin winter. We hope to see you there.
All about fuel: Guest speaker for Feb. 4 dinner Joining us on Feb. 4 will be John McHugh of Kwik Trip corporate staff (weather permitting). He’s
coming all the way from La Crosse, Wis., Kwik Trip corporate HQ, to talk to us. He will take the
floor for a few minutes to help us understand care and feeding of the fuel system of our Porsche
automobiles and other fuel thirsty toys. After all, Top Tier labelled gasoline is clearly recommended
in the owners ‘manual by Porsche, GM and other fine autos...and readily available at Kwik Trip
throughout the region.

Steve Groddy succeeds Bob Dean as the region’s liaison
with our local dealer, Porsche of the Fox Valley. “I have
had an obsession with cars since I was a young child. I
would pore over any new car brochures that my dad
would bring home and I would read the owner’s manuals
of my parent’s cars cover to cover during family trips. A
trip to the local car dealership was always
one of my favorite activities....and it still
is,” Steve said.
“My first enthusiast-type cars I had were
a Triumph Spitfire and later a Triumph
TR6. While my wife and I were stationed
in Germany I developed a taste for
BMW...we had a 1982 BMW 320
(European Spec) and a 1990 325is that we
picked up at the factory.
“Once we were settled back in Wisconsin
and our children had grown I purchased
my first Porsche .... a 1979 911SC (the car was set on ‘self
destruct’). Later I owned a 2008 Cayman and then a new
2015 Cayman. I currently own a 1987 944 and a 2013 Box-
ster S. The 944 is Zermatt Silver and had 27,000 miles on
it when I purchased it in 2016. I purchased the Agate
Grey Boxster S at a Cars and Coffee at Bergstrom in July
of 2019.
“One of my favorite vacation activities is attending driv-
ing schools. I
have attended
several driving
schools includ-
ing Mazda,
BMW, Audi,
Mercedes
AMG, Bob Bon-
durant, and of
course Porsche.
“I truly believe
that a active
relationship
between PCA
members and the local Porsche dealership is mutually
beneficial and I look forward to promoting this,” he
concluded.

Porsche posts record U.S. retail sales in 2019
Porsche AG announced in mid-January that December re-
tail sales rose 15.8 percent from a year ago to 4,733 vehi-
cles. For the full year, the total was 61,568 or a gain of 7.6
percent from 2018 – marking 10 consecutive years of annu-
al growth. The record goes hand-in-hand with new highs
in customer experience. For the first time, Porsche ranked
no. 1 in two key J.D. Power Studies in the same year: the
2019 Customer Service Index and 2019 Sales Satisfaction
Index.
December retail sales were led by the latest generation of
the Cayenne, up 7.2 percent from a year ago, and the re-
freshed Macan, which gained 24.5 percent in the same pe-
riod. The Panamera also enjoyed year-end demand, gain-
ing 78.3 percent in December from the same month last
year.
Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales in the
U.S. totaled 2,681 vehicles in December, up 17.7 percent
year-over-year. For 2019, CPO sales were up 8.9 percent
with 25,102 deliveries.

Detailing session continued Fox Valley Region members participated in a tech session in January hosted by Total Package Detailing in Little Chute,
Wis. Matt Norton, the owner, demonstrated for the 26 members and one guest who attended how the pros detail a car.
Todd Benz, vice president and immediate past president, brought in pizzas, sodas and water for all to partake as they
socialized before the session started. Benz also volunteered his 2013 Cayenne S as the demonstration vehicle.
Norton started by discussing some of the car washing do’s and don’ts that we are all guilty of.. Norton explained that he
likes to use foam cannons which he demonstrated with a power washer and explained the techniques on how to use sev-
eral different products. Norton then went on to show the two-bucket wash process and how to properly clean wheels.
There was also some hands-on participation by the group in the different phases of the tech session including the proper
way to clay bar a vehicle and the drying process using microfiber drying towels and a leaf blower to remove water in
those hard to reach spots that don’t drain well.
The evening concluded with door prizes donated by Benz, Norton and other members. Benz presented a 2020 Porsche
calendar donated by Bergstrom Porsche of the Fox Valley to Norton for graciously hosting this event.
