Born to compete. Even with ourselves.

The form varies. But the racing bloodlines, the undying dedication to pure sports car performance, the marriage of power and efficiency embodied in the Porsche principles, do not. And that truth is revealed in that moment you turn the key. Discover it for yourself with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute.

Experience every form of Porsche performance.

SPRING 2016 n 3

As my first contribution to Zeitung since accepting the nod as President of IRPCA, I figured I had better write about people, rather than cars. I’m much more comfortable with the car side of the things than with people... so here goes.

I got into this role, not by any mem-bership vote, but rather by raising my hand to be Vice President two years ago. Traditionally, the role of Vice-President has been a two-year training ground to become the President for the two years that follow. Say-ing “yes” to my V.P. recruitment came with a feeling of dipping my toe into the Colorado River, cliffs on either side, and knowing there would be class V rapids waiting to hit me two years downstream. I had been in the IRPCA and on the Autocross Committee for only a year. All I knew about our club was that the other folks on the board were dedicated people who liked to have fun. So I jumped into the kayak!

So, fittingly, my first action as I’m now hitting those rapids, is to profusely thank Gus Stribakos, our outgoing President. He spent four years in those two roles, and made it out the other end without drowning! He’s now sitting on the shore, having left a very healthy IRPCA behind, and looking upstream for me! Thanks for your service, Gus! And wish me luck!

Later in this issue, you will read about the growth of IRPCA. We are tremen-dously appreciative of the symbiotic relationship that we share with Utah’s Porsche dealers. While providing financial support to offset the core costs of many of our events, Ken Garff Porsche of Lehi and Porsche Salt Lake also excel in steering first-time owners to IRPCA. In return,

be to update our bylaws, an activity that should be un-dertaken every few years, and it is long overdue. On page 16, you will read about the proposed updates, and we will also ask for your vote to approve the amended bylaws. We appreciate your engagement in this process.

As you probably know, IRPCA is run 100% by volunteers. Our board members and subcommittee members are paid only in the satisfaction of knowing that our membership is showing up and having a great time doing what they enjoy, meeting like-minded people and connecting socially. We are paid in smiles. The only way we get a pay increase is if there are more “perma-grins” across all of your faces. And from my first three years in IRPCA, I can personally let you know, there

is a level of satisfaction with volunteering in IRPCA. And I think most who volunteer would echo my sentiments. Later in this Zeitung—on page 18, to be exact—you will find a partial list of opportunities for you to get involved.

If you’ve not been coming out to join in IRPCA activities, take another look at the cal-endar of events included in this magazine and at www.irpca.org. Consider dipping your toe in the water.

our aim is to add to the excitement of owning and driving a Porsche while creating social opportunities to make the connection even deeper—lead-ing to loyalty for the brand and repeat sales for our sponsors! As a result of this “virtuous circle,” IRPCA grew in 2015 at the fastest rate among the 144 Regions of PCA in the US and Canada.

Rapid growth in IRPCA is also driv-ing your board to update how we operate. One of our goals in 2016 will

on the personal side of things Rich Sanders, President

Fittingly, my first action as President is to profusely thank Gus Stribakos, our outgoing President, who left a very healthy IRPCA behind.

Editor’s note: Our previous issue was 12 months ago in spring 2015. We’ve welcomed 123 new primary members since then, so we are using a condensed format to fit everyone. Welcome!

Page 7: ZEITUNGINTERMOUNTAIN REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF …irpca.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Zeitung201605.pdf · ZEITUNGINTERMOUNTAIN REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA ... Kim and Paul Gardner,

ing” in the Region. As you’ve already read in our Presi-dent’s column, we are starting with a refresh of our bylaws, which probably haven’t been officially revised since the Region was founded in 1960! The proposed amendment reconciles our bylaws with the way the club actually operates (as well as some adjustments we’ve wanted to make), aligns our Regional pro-cesses more closely with National (for

example, by incorporating National membership classes as our own), and modernizes some of our procedures (such as recognizing electronic means of communication and conduct of elections, among other things). You can read more about the amendment proposal on page 16.

After (hopefully) an adop-tion of the revised bylaws by the membership (don’t forget

to send in your vote!), we’ll then turn our attention to autocross classing—which appears to have been updated more recently than our bylaws, though probably not by much. The Cayman, for example—introduced in 2006—is nowhere to be found on the current class sheet. And we now have several regular autocrossers competing in a class of one. So we’ll probably be looking at combining some existing classes while creating some new ones, using the guidelines provided in PCA’s Parade Competition Rules. Stay tuned.

See you at the next event!

Those of you who have been read-ing Zeitung for a while know that our publication “schedule” has been pretty sporadic, to say the least, over the past couple of years.

For a while, each edition of “The Runoff Area” would include new promises from Yours Truly that I’ll do a better job in the future. (This time for sure, Rocky!) But despite the best of intentions, those commitments never bore fruit. It’s not that I’m a slacker—well, OK, I am a bit of a slacker—but I’ve been mired in a (mostly) single-handed whole-house renovation for quite some time. And, left to my own devices, I tend to prioritize that project to the exclusion of almost everything else—other than my day job, that is—and Zeitung tends to be relegated to the back burner “for another month.” And needless to say, my former hobbies have fallen by the wayside as well.

But my fellow IRPCA mem-bers deserve better. So, rec-ognizing the limitations in my ability to balance priorities of various personal projects, I’ve asked Rich, our incom-ing President, to kick my behind, so to speak. I am certainly willing to put in the time to publish the magazine on our nominally quarterly schedule, but I sometimes need to have my feet held to the proverbial fire. Rich, paragon of organization and planning that he is, is perfectly suited to establish deadlines and crack that whip.

So if you don’t see another Zeitung by early summer, you can blame Rich, not me. (Just kidding, Rich!)

Meanwhile, the IRPCA event season

is officially in full swing! We’ve already had several “cars and coffee” events, the spring social, a couple of tours and autocrosses. And, by the time you read this, our first high-performance driver education event of the season will also be in the history books. And as you might expect, we’ve got photo cover-age of many of those events right here. Check out page 10 for Dennis Man-ning’s awesome autocross photos, and page 8 to relive some of the other events.

Speaking of awesome event photos, I know that a lot more of you are tak-

ing them as well. Why not share them with your fellow IRPCA members? Send them to me for possible publi-cation in a future Zeitung issue (yes, we’ll print more!)—or at the very least, post them to our Facebook group for others to enjoy. Oh, and on the subject of the Facebook group, it recently surpassed 150 members, which is an impressive number but still a fraction of our Region’s size. If you “don’t do” Facebook, I understand, but if you do, be sure to join the IRPCA group and see what you’re missing!

Finally, you’ll probably notice that we’re doing a little bit of “housekeep-

contributeEver wanted to see your name in print?

Zeitung needs your articles and photos! Become a part of the team by contribut-ing your stories, photos and ideas, and make Zeitung your magazine!

Subject matter for contributions can be just about anything—a technical how-to, a story about last summer’s road trip,

an interview, a breathless ode to your new (or old) Porsche, or anything else at least tangentially Porsche-related.

Not a writer? Not to worry! If you have an idea for an article, we can help put it into words, assist with development, pro-vide photographic support if appropriate, and make it all look great in print.

Content and inquiries may be submit-ted to the Zeitung editor at [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is the 10th of the month prior to issue date.

Thanks for helping to make Zeitung one of the best newsletters in PCA!

You’ll probably notice that we’re doing a little bit of “housekeep-ing” in the Region—starting with a refresh of our bylaws, followed by autocross classing.

IRPCA has some great events, and the tech session a few months back at Strong Porsche was fantastic! It was a full morning of excitement. It started with the 918 tech session, followed by the Waffle Truck, and then we had the HPDE introduction session with video and information from Jeff Bogaard and RaceCo! It was a lot of great Porsche activities packed into a morning.

The 918 tech session was very good. Randy and Larry (the great Porsche technicians from Strong Porsche) had a lot of great insights into the 918. I had never heard exactly what the “training” might consist of on a new-model Porsche like this. I had heard rumors of an expensive endeavor to send technicians to be trained, but nothing solid. Randy said they disas-sembled and reassembled a car in their one-week training session! I think that is great, and hopefully the only time they need to totally disas-semble one. They talked about the unique exhaust location, exiting on the top side of the car, and the way it reduced the heat in the engine compartment. They told us about the electric systems that would add over 200 horsepower to the total output. The best part for me was when they started the car. The exhaust note was very cool. As it was running, there in the showroom, I was taken back to

driving the 918 Darrell Troester

the previous summer, at Sears Point Raceway (or Sonoma Raceway, as it is currently known).

I had the great opportunity to drive a demo 918 at that world-famous track. Our friends (and former IRPCA members before moving to Reno, Nevada), Doug and Judy Brown, had ordered a 918, and one of the benefits was that they would have a number of opportunities to drive a 918 prior

to delivery of their own car. One of those opportunities was going to be at Sears Point in June. Doug contact-ed me earlier in the year and asked if I was interested in driving since he could invite a guest to have the experience too! Of course I said “yes”—and as luck would have it,

there was a Pirelli Cup race at Laguna Seca the following weekend, so I could really get a Porsche fix in. Shari and I worked over the calendar and made everything work out so that we turned a race trip into a great vacation and massive Porsche experience.

We already had a plan to go to Laguna Seca the following weekend with Jeff and Loretta Bogaard, so we just had to leave early and tow to So-noma first. The race weekend was in the works before the 918 opportunity, and we were planning for me to tow both race cars while Jeff would tow his trailer to Laguna Seca. We would spend the weekend in their trailer at the campground there and would race and in general have a good time. This additional opportunity was just the icing on the cake!

Of course, the logistics had to have some wrinkles, as we were going to a race on the following weekend. I had loaded up our two-car trailer

with both my car and Jeff’s Spec 944. There was a Pirelli Cup race for GT3 Cup cars and a Porsche Owners’ Club race that weekend at Laguna Seca. Shari and I would tow to Sparks, Ne-vada, spend the night, then tow into Sonoma and spend a couple of days there. After our time in Sonoma, Shari and I would then tow to Laguna Seca and meet Jeff and Loretta. One of those days in Sonoma would be “the day”! Planning a trip with hotel spots that could accommodate our two-car trailer is always interesting, and this trip was no exception. Reno/Sparks was fine; I had called the hotel and used Google Earth to verify parking! Sonoma was going to be a challenge, as there are not many places to park a 44-foot trailer, but it looked like the bed and breakfast in Sonoma would have space. We arrived in Sonoma, and reality hit on the parking. No way was I getting that trailer in the parking lot. The B&B was great, however, as they came out to look at the parking and suggested we just park on the

street across from the B&B. It can be iffy parking a long trailer on the street, but the B&B said no problem. It is good to have locals tell you where it is OK to park something like that!

We had a great dinner that night in Sonoma with Doug and Judy, and we enjoyed the B&B’s wine tasting that was “included.” We made sure we had the plan for the next day, and went to bed. Porsche was very particular about having you get to the track at a specific time so that you could sign the ever-present “waiver,” indicating that you would be driving and that if you did something stupid, you could get hurt or killed. Duh—stu-pid can be painful! We did not want to be late that next morning.

The morning arrived, and we were up and going on time. A quick drive to the track and we were there at the check-in station. It was kind of funny, pulling up to the check-in station in our one-ton Chevy tow vehicle, but hey, you have to do what you have to do. We went into the check-in sta-tion, where they had more waivers and an ID check. Also present was a display 918 for pre-track orienta-tion. The anticipation was killing me!

Finally, it was time to get on the track. Doug, Judy, Shari and I went down to the hot pit for the experi-ence. We selected our helmets prepared for an orientation lap in a new Turbo S. Not a bad ride for a quick orientation ride and drive, I would say! It had been a few years since I had driven Sears Point, but it came back quickly on our ride-along lap. Doug and I were in separate cars with instruc-tors playing some follow-the-leader. Then we came in and were allowed back out in the Turbos, only this time we could drive. This was to make sure that we could actually drive and not crash, I am

sure. Porsche is pretty smart and they have done this before. If someone is going to be a bonehead, better to let them crash a “run-of-the-mill” Turbo, I think! The laps in the Turbo were great. The cars were equipped with the PDK transmission, the crispness of which impressed me versus the Tiptronics that I had driven previously.

Now it was the time! We each climbed into a car with an instruc-tor who would drive first. Those laps were very interesting as they showed us many of the features of the car. Electric-only mode was impressive! The acceleration was very good, and the total silence was almost eerie. Then a quick button-push and into regular hybrid mode—whoa—now some serious acceleration. The car is quite heavy, but it handles much lighter. I understand that they are 3600 pounds, then you add in the driver! This car did not feel like 3600 pounds. Next was the “race mode” and whoa again! It was a big jump again on the acceleration. The car was just amaz-

ing, well-balanced and just a rocket. It did show its weight when stopping, however. Even with the humongous brakes, it did not slow down like my Cup Car. I do think it out-accelerated it, though! I think a few more laps would have been a lot of fun, but again, Porsche knows how we are. I had just enough lap time to really have fun and see the potential, but I did not have enough laps to get com-fortable enough to really press the envelope. Porsche also had a “lead car” to help us stay out of trouble. Very smart of them, I would imagine.

Speaking of the “lead car,” Shari and Judy did manage to score rides in those cars while we were in the 918’s. Porsche does put on a class act. We all had a great time and great memo-ries were made.

In comparison, I have had the great fortune to drive a GT3 RS 4.0 and a Carrera GT on the track and I can tell you, the 918 lives up to the hype! Each of those “supercars” is truly super. They are all similar and different at

the same time. I have loved driving all of them. It is just amazing to me that Porsche can continue to produce street cars with such great performance. I did not find any of those three to be scary, or hard to handle. They all communicated to you that they were ready to go, and you had better be too! All three have a different feel. You can tell the GT3 is rear-engined and is the lightest, I think. The Carrera GT has the mid-engine, but only rear wheel drive with lots of “revs” in the motor. The 918 pulls the hardest. Those horse-power numbers are real, and having the electric motors on the front wheels makes it very well balanced.

The ride time was over much too quickly. It is hard to believe that the 918 is street-legal and not just a dedicated track car. I can tell you that it is just an amazing car.

We need your vote! Each of the local Regions within the

national PCA organization is expected to run according to its own set of bylaws. These bylaws are intended to provide a set of rules and procedures which allow for each club to be run in a predictable and consistent manner. The bylaws govern a wide variety of topics.

While IRPCA has grown in size and participation by our members, we’ve not really kept up in maintain-ing a set of bylaws which will allow us to move forward in the predictable and consistent man-ner expected of an organization of our size today. During 2015, a sub-committee of board mem-bers was formed to update our bylaws. The committee, consist-ing of Zana Anderson, Jeremy Rosenberger, Rich Sanders and most recently Richard Aupperle, completed their recommendation for a new set of bylaws in Febru-ary. The draft recommendation was reviewed and revised at our March board meeting, with a final version ac-cepted by the board. The next step in the process is to hold an approval vote by the IRPCA general membership.

This is where we need you to play your role!

We are going to need your vote to accept or reject the new bylaws. Inside this version of Zeitung, you will find a postcard-sized ballot. We request that you vote, legibly print your name and PCA member ID (if you know it), and drop the card in the mail. As an alternative, you can vote by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. All you need to write in the e-mail is the word “for” or “against”, followed by your name as it appears in your PCA profile, and PCA member ID (again, if you have it). Votes need to be received by May 31, 2016 to be counted. Any ballots for which we

cannot match the member name and/or PCA ID with the PCA membership database will be invalidated.

What’s that? You want to know what you are voting for?

Because of the extensive scope of the updates, we have structured the amendment as a wholesale replace-ment of the original document. The full text of the new bylaws can be found at www.irpca.org. Follow the link on the home page, and it will

open the complete text of the docu-ment. However, for somewhat lighter reading, here is a summary of the most significant changes that will oc-cur by adopting the new bylaws.•The bylaws will re-establish an

election process for key Officers in the club. This will include annual elections for the roles of President, two Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer. Term limits of two years are imposed on the former three positions, while the latter two are not term limited for reasons of continuity.

• IRPCA currently has one Vice President. With the important and expanding role of Web and mul-tiple social media communications methods added to traditional maga-zine and postcard publications, we feel the need for a Vice President of Communications. Similarly, our number of scheduled club events

has grown from mid-teens in prior years to over 30 in 2016, calling for a Vice President of Activities of-fice. The role of this office will be to coordinate planning and timing of the annual calendar proposed by our various committees (track, auto-cross, tours, socials, rally, cars and coffee, etc.).

•The bylaws will also establish a nominating committee for those officer positions including President,

two Vice Presidents, Treasurer and Secretary. The nominating committee will include board and non-board members. The committee will annually present a recommended slate of candi-dates for election that year.•A process is also established for additional nominations from the general membership for the same positions, which can then be contested in a fall election. Dates and timing of this process are established in the bylaws.

•An Executive Council will be cre-ated within the Board of Directors to address decisions deemed critical to the organization or outside the normal course of operations of board committees and sub-com-mittees. The bylaws establish the Executive Council and its gover-nance process. The collective results of your

membership votes will be shared at the July 16th social. In the interim, as-suming approval of the bylaws by the membership, the board will establish a nominating committee for key posi-tions for an election in the fall which will determine our club leadership for 2017.

A special award awaits our PCA Region.

Every year, PCA holds several national contests for its 144 Regional clubs. Two of those awards relate to just how quickly Regions are able to grow their membership. One growth award goes to the Region with the greatest number of new members. The other—drum-roll, please—goes to the Region with the highest percentage of growth over the prior year.

Awards are present-ed each year at PCA’s Porsche Parade. This year’s Parade will be held in Jay Peak, Ver-mont during the last week of June. At the closing ceremonies, IRPCA will be awarded the “Factored Growth National Award” for 2015. The equation for winning is simple on the surface: Get more members in the front door, and then keep them from going out the back door.

The biggest factor in getting new members in the door is clearly the incredible support that we’ve enjoyed from our sponsoring Porsche dealers, who make it a point to recommend PCA membership to most, if not all, first-time Porsche buyers. On the back side of the equation, we have a team of very dedicated and creative volun-

teer committee members who put together a wide variety of fun things to do. This has led to a retention factor in the club not often seen in the past.

Growing PainsOur growth is really showing at club

activities. The motto of PCA is, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” As the

attendee list grows at each activity, it’s easy to observe a geometric increase in the level of social interaction that takes place as people connect for the first time, or re-connect from the past. This is a hidden reward that puts a smile on the face of volunteer organiz-ers. The challenge, though, is for us to keep up with the growth. We are always looking for club members to step up their level of engagement. If you like the club and would like to

give back, there are plenty of opportu-nities to get involved. Here are a few examples of things we are looking for right now:•Socials. We are seeking protégés

to work with Loretta Bogaard and Shari Troester. They plan to lead the social committee through 2017, but we need a couple of new volunteers

to learn the ropes, starting now.•Autocross. Today, Richard Aupperle car-ries the load—both literally and figura-tively. Before and after every autocross, he picks up the club trailer with all the supplies, tows it to the event, packs it up and returns it to storage. I’m sure he would love help on the tow end of things. And as you’ve probably read, we always ask partici-pants to help during autocross, with setup

and teardown as the equipment is reloaded.

•Track Days. Diane Johnstone has taken the lead for at least the last two years in recruiting the neces-sary volunteers at the track to help Kay Koellner with registration and to provide support throughout the day. She has organized free support from students at Salt Lake Commu-nity College for the past two years, but this relationship may not last

Complete set of perfect OZ Alleggrita HLT wheels with nearly new BF Goodrich G-Force R1 tires. Wheel sizes are 18x8 and 18x10 and are Anthracite in color. Tire sizes are P225/40ZR18 and P265/35ZR18. Offset is 50 and 65. The package was used for one DE only on my NB Porsche 993 at MMP. Wheels are perfect, and tires have basically one heat cycle. Bought them at the end of last year planning to do multiple track days this season, but... Cost new was over $3,000, will take $2,500. These are the perfect track wheel/tire package. Very light and strong. Tires are beyond my capabilities. Contact Pete White at [email protected].

forever. So if you are thinking about someday bringing your car out to the track, you should consider step-ping up as a volunteer to get a close-up look at how we run our track days, and to talk to lots of other club members about their experience.

•Tours. Zana Anderson is our tour master. She can always use help with waiver signing and often with “sweeper car” assignments. Let her know as you RSVP for the tour if you are willing to help out!

•Social Media and Web. We are currently seeking a person with experience in Web design using WordPress. In lieu of spending club budget dollars on a redesign of www.irpca.org, we are looking for a person who can volunteer some time and talent, spread over a pe-riod of a couple of months, to bring our Web site into 2016. The intended outcome is to have a site that makes it easier for more of our club leaders to contribute content to the site in a

user-friendly way, and at the same time to keep Debbie Roque, our Webmaster, from carrying 100% of the load for entering and editing content.

•Print Media. Nobody is more com-mitted to the Region’s magazine than Zeitung editor Jeremy Rosen-berger (some would say he needs to be “committed”). In an earnest effort to (re-)establish a regular publication schedule, our editor seeks assistance with managing the business of the magazine. We are looking to install an Advertising Manager to coordinate with existing advertisers and sign up new ones. Zeitung covers 100% of its produc-tion costs through advertising, and we’d like to keep it that way! These are just a few examples of

where and how we could use some extra support. If you are willing and able to dip your toe into any of these waters, just drop a note to [email protected].

A Little Puddle

It’s a Monday morning at 7:30 AM and my phone rings.

“Good morning,” I say.“Good morning,” says the caller.“How may I help you?” I continue.“I just found a little puddle under my

Porsche. Is that bad?”Somehow I just know it’s going to

be a long week.I have to explain to

the caller that there are a number of dif-ferent fluids in his Porsche, and that unless he gives me more information I can’t tell him if it’s harmless or not. I need to know the color, the feel and the location of the fluid before I can start to guess what it is.

Let’s just list the possible fluids (in roughly descending order of volume):

shop talk Pedro Bonilla, Gold Coast Region

1. GasolineThe gas tank holds 13-25 gallons.

You should know how gasoline looks and smells.

The tank is generally lo-cated in front (except for the trucks), but the fuel lines run the length of the car to

the engine, so a leak can occur anywhere under

the car.A gasoline leak is

dangerous and needs to be addressed with urgency.2. Coolant

There are approximately 6 gallons of anti-freeze/coolant in water-cooled Porsches, and not a single drop in the air-cooled ones. Those that use it

could have pink, neon yellow, green or any other color. It’s slippery and smells sweet. It’s also poisonous.

Depending on the particular

Porsche, the expansion tank could be in the rear (Carrera, Cayman and Box-ster) or in the front (Cayenne, Macan,

Panamera). The expansion tank has a pressure cap that can leak with time. There are coolant lines running the length of the sports cars, so a leak can happen any-where. The radiators which cool down the antifreeze are up front and are prone to punctures from road debris. Some leaks are very hard to detect and require a pressure test.

3. Engine OilThere’s anywhere between 6 and

10 quarts on normal street Porsches. When fresh, it’s a dark amber color which quickly turns to dark brown or black with mileage. It’s slippery and has a distinct odor.

An oil leak will generally be under the engine, but could come from the center (intermediate shaft or rear

Page 23: ZEITUNGINTERMOUNTAIN REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF …irpca.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Zeitung201605.pdf · ZEITUNGINTERMOUNTAIN REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA ... Kim and Paul Gardner,

SPRING 2016 n 21

main seal), the sides (spark plug tubes or head gaskets) or from the oil pan itself (bad plug, puncture or gasket).

A small leak is not necessarily an urgent fix.4. Windshield Washer Fluid

Around a gallon or more. It’s a light, watery fluid that can have any color dye such as blue, green, pink, etc.

If the vehicle has a rear window washer, it may have one long line run-ning the length of the car, or it may have a separate tank. Gener-ally, leaks are from the hoses coming from the reservoir or from the small electric pump.5. Transmission Oil

There’s close to one gallon. Depending on whether you have a manual or an automat-ic, the consistency, smell and color will vary. Automatic tranny fluid is a light oil, generally red with a strong petroleum smell—but if overdue for replacement, it’s dark brown in color

and may smell burnt. Manual tranny fluid in Porsches is very viscous—much heavier

than motor oil—and has a deep blue or green color and smells like rotten eggs.

6. Brake/Clutch FluidAbout one liter. A

light amber-col-ored fluid which is corrosive and

will get hot when reacting with water.

The most likely leaks could come from the brake caliper bleed nipples, a cracked hard brake line

or a bad clutch slave cylinder.

Clean any spills and then neutralize with water.7. Battery Acid

There’s about one gallon. A very strong and corrosive acid (sulfuric) which will burn skin. A spill can only come from the battery. Neutralize

with soda.8. Power Steering Fluid

There’s less than one quart. This is a light-weight hy-draulic oil which can be almost clear, a light amber or a light green color.

It could leak from the power steering pump, its lines or from the steering mechanism on the front axle.9. Air Conditioning Com-pressor Oil

About one quart. Also a

light-weight oil with a distinct odor. When a UV

dye is added it will glow under UV light.

Leaks can come from the A/C compressor, and/or its lines when cracked.10. Convertible Top Hy-draulic Oil

About 24 ounces. Light am-ber color, but could also have a green tint.

Only on the 911 Cabriolets, since Boxsters use an all-electric top. Leaks generally appear running down the rear

shocks.Not all

leaks present

the same urgency for repair. Gasoline leaks are

inherently a fire danger; battery acid can burn the

skin and corrode what it touches; brake fluid is corrosive but the urgency is with repair, as this leak

has to do with safety and the abil-ity to stop the vehicle.

The other fluids aren’t as crucial: Power steering leaks will cause the steering to be much heavier but the vehicle will still turn. A/C refrigerant or oil leaks will make the car uncomfortable in hot conditions, and a leaky

These are held in large parking lots (such as fairgrounds or the Maverik Center). They involve navigating a course laid out in the parking lot with traffic cones. Cars are run one at a time, or spaced well apart for safety. The events are timed, with each driver getting 5-6 runs. Speeds are generally low, with emphasis on get-ting through the tight course quickly. The design of the course is always done with safety in mind—generally, the biggest danger to you is hitting one of the cones, leaving your car unharmed, but your ego bruised. Hel-mets with Snell SA or M ratings of 2010 or newer are required, but loaners are available at the event. Participation in the autocross is open to anybody with a driver’s license.

Utah Motorsports Campus also pro-vides an excellent opportunity to learn the potential of your car. The Porsche Club has several Driver Education events there each year. Events are run on the same track in Tooele that professional race series (American Le-Mans, Grand Am Racing, etc.) use. We use either half the track (providing a course about 2.5 miles long with 10-11 turns), or the full 4.5-mile course.

how we rollOur club is blessed by some of the

best facilities and terrain for the car enthusiast. The Intermountain Region Porsche Club of America organizes a variety of activities to help you enjoy your car.

Several Driving Tours are orga-nized each year. These give you a chance to meet with other owners and take a nice drive on our scenic roads. Some are day trips with a stop for lunch, while others are multi-day trips with overnight stops. Stops are made for cultural events and to pho-tograph our cars at scenic points. We seldom have “single point” restaurants or hotels you must stay in, although a “Tour Central” hotel and/or restaurant will be designated to provide a gather-ing place. There is no charge for tours, and you are welcome to join or leave a Tour in progress whenever you wish. These trips are a great excuse to get out and drive those scenic roads that we never seem to find time to enjoy.

If you want to explore the potential of your car, a driving tour isn’t the best place to do it. Fortunately, the Porsche Club offers a couple ways to do that safely. The Region holds Autocross events during the warmer months.

advertising rates per issue

The Driver Education events are a fun and legal way to explore the high-speed dynamics that make Porsches legendary. Although several cars will be on the track, the event is very safe, with passing only in designated areas (never in corners) and only with agreement between both drivers. Each driver will be given about two hours of track time each day. As with autocross, helmets are required, as are long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed shoes. Loaner helmets are generally not available, so you will want to buy one or arrange to borrow one for the day.

If you don’t feel like driving, the club still has a lot to offer. The Region has a great Social calendar, with events planned almost every month. The so-cial schedule generally starts in Janu-ary, and typical events include “date nights” to restaurants, plays and other activities. The social events continue through the year, with summer, fall and holiday activities planned.

Plenty of opportunities exist to get involved, not only as a participant but as a volunteer. If you’d like to help out with event planning, contact any of the Regional leaders on page 2.

A couple of days after the event at Porsche of Albu-querque, event registration opened up for this year’s

Porsche Parade in Jay Peak, Vermont. I know that the majority of Zone 9 members will not be attending Parade this year, but I hope they’ll visit the PCA Web site and Facebook page for regular updates.

And speaking of event registration, be sure to watch for an announce-ment from PCA for when Treffen Lake Tahoe will open up for registration (see page 19). That should happen sometime this month. (Along with changing the name from “Escape” to “Treffen North America,” PCA has doubled the frequency of these events to biannually –Ed)

party, and one of the treats outside (besides the chocolate truffles!) was a line-up of historical 911’s, including a 50th PCA Anniversary Club Coupe. Inside the showroom, we saw a 60th PCA Anniversary Edition 911 GTS

Club Coupe belonging to Roadrunner member Tom Linton. The evening’s guest speaker was Bruce Phillips, “a

911 resident ex-pert.” Bruce gave an interesting talk describing the featured historical 911’s, and then he pointed out the design features of the new 911. I’ve attended some of Bruce’s tech sessions in the past, and I always learn a lot from him.

Hello Zone 9ers,Hard to believe we’re already well

into the second quarter of 2016. As far as PCA is concerned, it’s business as usual—lots of activity going on with all of the Zone 9 Regions. I attended the RMR New Member Social in March, and I was very impressed with the organiza-tion and level of participation by the Region leadership. The party was held at the Man Cave in Westminster, CO, and there were several tables set up with printed material and pictures of the various events. There was also a food drive, where non-perishables and cash were collected. Every-one enjoyed pizza and drinks for lunch and throughout the event, ticket numbers were drawn for door prizes. It was great to see lots of seasoned RMR members, as well as to meet several new members. I’m sure RMR will see many of the new members at their upcoming events.

During the first Saturday in April, Roadrunner Region’s local dealership, Porsche of Albuquer-que, hosted an unveiling of the new 911 Carrera S. It was quite the fancy
