What is College Goal Sunday?

• College Goal Sunday SM is a nation-wide outreach initiative, funded by the Lumina Foundation, which seeks to provide information about and access to Federal Financial Aid to students of underserved and underrepresented populations.

College Goal Sunday is Not…

• A Recruitment Effort

• A Marketing Opportunity

• A College Night

College Goal Sunday

• The event is offered free of charge to students & families who need financial aid assistance completing the financial aid paperwork and/or completing the web based application.

History of College Goal Sunday

• College Goal Sunday began in Indiana in 1989 as a joint project of the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association (ISFAA) and the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana (SSACI)

• Funding from Lilly Endowment, Inc.

• The program aided families in

breaking what was perceived as one of the biggest barriers to higher education, the financial aid process.

• College Goal Sunday has since expanded and is now a Nation-wide initiative.

WV College Goal Sunday

• Through previous established relationships within the TRiO Community and a commitment to Financial Aid Access from the WV Higher Education Policy Commission, the work of bringing CGS to West Virginia began in the Spring of 2008.

WV College Goal Sunday

• Initial Meeting with College Access and Financial Aid Professionals

• From this meeting, work began on the multi-phase process of submitting grant applications to obtain funds for the CGS project.

Where are we now?

• College Goal Sunday will launch for the first time on February 21, 2010 at approximately 17 locations throughout West Virginia.

• On College Goal Sunday, financial aid experts along with other partners host CGS at sites throughout the state.

• Each site has a Local Site Coordinator who volunteers to serve as the single point of contact for that site.
