Thegoalsandobjectives inthe6thgradechoiraretofocusnotonlyonthejoysofsingingbuthowtoread,writeandsingmusic.Wewillexploremusichistoryfromthedarkagestocontemporarymusicaswellashowmusicisapartofotheracademicdisciplines.Musicisawonderfuladventurethatcrossescenturiesoftimeandmanyformsandstyles.It’sajourneythatisapartofourlivesandaffectsthetraditionsandcultureswehavetoday.MyexpectationsforALLSTUDENTSistocompleteassignments,studyforeachtest,practice,andmore than anything – tohave funwhile you learn! BASICMUSICTHEORYANDMUSICTERMS

Inthisquarteryouwilllearnbasicfundamentalmusictheory.Youwillberesponsibleforrecognizingandwritingmusicsymbolsandidentifythembyname.Musictermsgivemeaningtothemusicwesingandplay.YouwillberequiredtoknowthesetermsbytheirItaliannameandtheirEnglishdefinition.

COMPOSERS&MUSICHISTORY

Inthisquarterwewillexplorewell-knowncomposers:Bach,Mozart,Beethoven,aswellascomposersthatrepresenttheAmericanculture.Wewillspendtimelisteningtotheirmusicandstudyingthehistoricalbackgroundofeachtimeperiod.

DuringthecourseofthequarterIwillbeshowingsomeofthefollowingcurriculumbasedvideos.

Althoughnotallperformancesareconcerts;ALLstudentsarerequiredtoperform.ThethirdquarterwillbeaCLASSROOMPERFORMANCEONLY!Thisperformancewilltakeplaceinthechoirroomduringtheregularclasstime.Concertattireisasfollows:Blackpants/jeansforboysandgirls(exceptionswillbemadeforthosestudentswithreligiousrestrictions).Whitelongorshortsleevedshirtsortopsareacceptable.T-shirtsARENOTOPTIONAL!Darkcoloredshoes,nosandals,flip-flopsorheelsover2”.Thesetypesofshoesaresafetyissueswhenstudentsareperformingontherisers.Nogawkyoroversizedjewelry.Ihighlydiscouragecoloredhair(suchasgreen,pink,blue,etc)asitoftenposesadistractionfromtheoverallstageperformanceanduniformityofthechoir.Studentswhohaveawrittenexcusedabsencewillreceiveatheorymake-uppacket,whichmustbecompletedandreturnedinaccordancetoDistrictpolicyformake-upwork.Studentswithunexcusedabsenceswillbegivena“ZERO”forthemissedperformance–NOEXCEPTIONS!

“TheOrchestraSings”Melodyisoneoftheuniversalelementsofmusic.DiscoverhowtheorchestrasingsinthisinteractiveprogramfromCarnegieHallperformedbytheColoradoSpringsPhilharmonicwithhelpfromlocalstudentmusicians.Thecostforticket&busfareis$7perperson.Ihaveslottedspacesfor5chaperones.Thepricesarethesameforadults.Ifyouwouldliketochaperone,Ineedyournamesassoonaspossible.
