WELCOME TO6 TH GRADE CHOIR! The goals and objectives in the 6 th grade choir are to focus not only on the joys of singing but how to read, write and sing music. We will explore music history from the dark ages to contemporary music as well as how music is a part of other academic disciplines. Music is a wonderful adventure that crosses centuries of time and many forms and styles. It’s a journey that is a part of our lives and affects the traditions and cultures we have today. My expectations for ALL STUDENTS is to complete assignments, study for each test, practice, and more than anything – to have fun while you learn! It is my desire and goal to take my singers far beyond music, cultivating discipline, respect, commitment and character as they learn music and performance skills, Instructor: Dr. Harriet Jarmon E-Mail: [email protected] Phone: (719) 495-1149 ext. 4260 Website: www.smschoirnews.wikispaces.com BASIC MUSIC THEORY AND MUSIC TERMS In this quarter you will learn basic fundamental music theory. You will be responsible for recognizing and writing music symbols and identify them by name. Music terms give meaning to the music we sing and play. You will be required to know these terms by their Italian name and their English definition. COMPOSERS & MUSIC HISTORY In this quarter we will explore well-known composers: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, as well as composers that represent the American culture. We will spend time listening to their music and studying the historical background of each time period. VIDEO PRESENTATIONS During the course of the quarter I will be showing some of the following curriculum based videos. “Meet the Musicians” – Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Joplin “From Bach to Rock” “The Music Instinct” – Science & Song “American Roots Music” “Renaissance Music & Art” A portion of the student’s Participation grade will be determined based on bringing the following required materials to class daily. § Pocket Folder and notebook paper § Pencils (2) § Index cards § (1) Box of Kleenex Be on time to class making sure to enter and exit the classroom quietly. No food, gum or drink is allowed in the classroom. Any non-accidental damage to any sheet music will be handled by replacement of music.
