Key concepts of Open Badges

Open Badges are...• An open technical standard – meaning any organisation

can create, issue and verify them, and any individual can earn, manage and display them across the web.

• A way of building a picture of your learning throughout life.

• Full of information – who issued them, what for and when.

• Totally sharable – users can take them anywhere on the web, showing them off to prospective employers and celebrating achievements with friends.

14

The value of badges?

©The Volunteer centre Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde

Badges allow a person to share their skills and competencies with the world... in

context.

15

What do we mean by context?

©The Volunteer centre Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde

The metadata contained within each badge tells us about the issuer, criteria and

evidence allowing us to see the value.

Focusing on Skills

©The Volunteer centre Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde

Within all the learning that we do whether formal or informal we gain skills and competencies.

With badges we try to break down each piece of learning into smaller achievements to motivate continued participation.

Lets look at an example...

Now its time to think about your organisation and the possibilities for badges in your work with volunteers...

Break into groups

Think about what training you offer to your volunteers What badges could you issue them to recognise their learning? Is there any commonality between organisations?

You have 10 minutes!
