ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
TSU (Pages 23-24)
Bastrop, Louisiana-Two weeks
ago we took one of the most dif-
ficult trips of my life going
home to help bury my brother
(Charlie E. Winston), the Lexus
IS 350 Convertible made the trip
easier. Because the smooth rid-
ing Lexus gave me a good feel-
ing and made me think of the
good times we had during the
near 43 years we spent in
Houston, Texas together. It was
Charlie who gave me a start in
Houston in May of 1970 and for
that we will be forever grateful
to him.
The solid built IS 350C is pow-
ered by a 306 horsepower 3.5
Liter DOHC 24 valve V6 dual
VVT-I engine that produces 277
pounds per foot of torque. Its
mated to a six speed electroni-
cally controlled automatic trans-
mission with intelligence (ECT-
I). Power comes thrusting to the
ground on 17-inch aluminum
Alloy wheels circulating with a
set of all season tires. The front
has P225/45R17 and the rear has
a set of P245/45R 17-inch
wheels. This combination helps
make the handling greater for
this vehicle because the front
tires are more nimble for steer-
ing purposes while the rear will
give the vehicle most thrust and
performance capability. These
are the arrangements that are
normally found one formula one
racing vehicles. Keep in mind
the IS 350C is right up there
with the rest of the world finest
roadsters. Ventilated front and
rear disc brakes help makes
stopping about as say as it can
be when you consider the fact
you know you are going to be
speeding in this vehicle.
Without a doubt the smooth ride
with all that luxury is certainly
going to make you want to go
real fast.
Safety features are at a high pre-
mium on this model and to name
a very is anti-locking brakes
with EBD and Brake Assist as
well as smart stop technology.
This unit is also equipped with
vehicle Dynamic Integrated
Management (VDIM) and has
advanced front air bags (twin
chamber for front passenger.
Yes it also has driver and front
passenger knee airbags, front
seat mounted side impact airbags
and supplemental restraint sys-
tem. An alarm system complete
with in-key Remote Control and
stolen vehicle location and emer-
gency assist button and
enhanced roadside assistance. (1
year trial subscription included).
A tire pressure monitor and tool
kit as well as first aid kits rounds
out the features.
Once inside the luxury appoint-
ments just jump right out at you.
For example a power tractable
aluminum alloy convertible top
easy access front passengers

headrest. This seat is leather
trimmed 10-way power for driv-
er and front passenger with two-
way power lumbar adjustments.
The gauges are racecar like elec-
troluminescent optitron and the
three spoke leather trimmed
steering wheel and puddle lamps
also.

A KING-SIZE VIEWThe 2013 Lexus IS 350C provides some mighty fine touring
It’s been a long time in coming
but the all new 2013 Toyota
Avalon is here. Keep in mind
it's now at a much more afford-
able price range. Our test vehicle
handsomely equipped came in at
just under $34,000. Built at
Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky
plant, the new Avalon is graces
the American street with an all
new look. Favoring more of the
Camry line the new Avalon is
still one of the top luxury vehi-
cles in the world and it just
comes with a much more man-
ageable price range.
Our test vehicle came with a
powerful yet fuel efficient 3.5
Liter 268 horsepower DOHC 24
valve V-6 engine with VVT-I.
This unit is mated to a smooth
shifting fuel saving six-speed
ECT-I automatic transmission
with sequential shift. All this
driving fun strolls to the pave-
ment on 17 inch allow wheels
rounded with P215/55R 17 per-
formance tires wrapped around
them. When you do the math
you get 21 miles per gallon in
the city and 31 miles per gallon
on the highway for a combined
25 miles per gallon. Not bad at
all when you considers the luxu-
ry you have all-around you and
still manage to save a few dol-
lars on today’s high dollar gaso-
line rates. According to Toyota
you could save as much as 850
dollars over the five-year period
when compared to any average
of new vehicle operation.
Safety is highlighted by powered
assisted front solid rear disc
brakes and electric power steer-
ing. Vehicle Stability Control
along with TRAC Control as
well as EBD with brake assist
and smart stop technology
helped make the vehicle safer as
well. Plus you know a full array
of air bags including knee and
seat mounted side air bags both
front and rear seats, throw in a
direct tire pressure monitoring
system, you know you are safe
as can be while in the new
Avalon.
The interior is luxurious to say
the least and something you
expect to find in automobiles
with a much bigger price tag.
Dual zone auto climate control
with air filtration and rear sear
vents help make you comfort-
able as possible.
Sounds are provided by an
AM/FM Six-Disc CD Audio
system with 6.1 inch touch
screen and MP3/WWA eight-
speaker setup complete with
backup camera. The audio capa-
bilities include USB with POD
connection and Bluetooth to
name a few.
Other luxury features include
eight-way driver power seat with
four-way front passenger seat
both with lumber support.
Warranties are 3-year 36,000
mile basic coverage and a five-
year-50,000 miles power train
coverage plus five-year/unlimit-
ed mile corrosion perforation
coverage.
Outside you get a special feeling
just looking at the new sleeker
Avalon and its Quadra beam
headlights with auto On/Off and
daytime running lights with
On/Off switch. These lights turn
in the direction you are turning
to provide clear visibility even
on very dark roads. Heated out-
side mirrors with turn signal
indicator and they also power
fold when you are in tight
spaces.
In closing please allow me to
add the power tilt/slide moon
roof and dual chrome tipped
exhaust closes out a classic
affordable luxury vehicle!
As the years go by, automakers
are simply doing a much better
job of building entry level prod-
uct lines. One such vehicle is
the new Chevrolet Sonic five
door RS scoring several five-star
rating by the NHTSA. First of
all the vehicle gets five-star rat-
ing for both driver and front pas-
sengers in frontal crashes, five
star rating in both front and rear
seat passengers in side crashes
and a four star rating for roll
over all combining for a five-
star overall rating by the
NHTSA. We are talking about a
vehicle that tips the scales at a
standard price of just over
$20,000.
Since when have you seen a unit
base priced under $20,000 with
Thorax side impact seat-mount-
ed side front and rear outboard
seat position with air bags head
curtains and dual stage frontal
driver and front passengers air
bags to name a couple of things?
The new Sonic RS also has front
and rear outboard seating posi-
tions with rollover protection
and yes even knee bags for driv-
er and front passenger.
The Sonic is making good num-
bers with its 1.4 liter ecotec
turbo in-line four-cylinder
engine that produces 138 horse-
power and 148 pounds per foot
of torque. This engine delivers
27 miles per gallon in the city
and 34 on the highway with a
combined mileage average of 30
miles per gallon. This peppy lit-
tle engine is mated to a six-
speed manual transmission with
a close ratio gearing and 4.18
final drive ratio. Keep in mind
we are also talking about a five-
year 100,000 miles power train
limited warranty; see your local
dealer for more details. Our test
vehicle also came with Hill Hold
feature and sport suspension,
lowered with performance-tuned
campers, plus oil lift monitoring
system and driver information
center, cruise control and electric
power steering. Four-wheel disc
anti-locking brakes stops the
Sonic and traction control along
with stabilitrek control keeps it
firm in all sorts of driving
maneuvers.
Just in case you haven’t guessed
it we feel pretty good about the
new Sonic RS and that it’s a
great buy. However a 12.2 fuel
tank reduces the travel distance
somewhat.
Inside you are greeted by a pret-
ty good looking interior layout
with such features as leather
wrapped steering wheel with tilt
and telescopic features. A six-
speaker audio system provides
you with premium sound quality.
Rolling on 17 inch Midnight sil-
ver aluminum wheels wrapped
with a performance tire the new
Sonic is certainly turn a few
heads.
In closing please allow me to
add the rear spoiler and roof
mounted RS specific closes out
a wonderful looking little vehi-
cle!

Dallas, Texas-Once again we
made the trip to Big D and this
time we were behind the wheel
of the all-new 2013 Sierra
Denali and what a ride it was.
This super truck is powered a
6.2 Liter V8 with variable valve
timing E85-capable and mated
to a Hydra-Matic 6 L80-six-
speed transmission. Cranking
out 403 horsepower and 417
pounds per foot of torque and

pounds this truck is ready to roll

city and 18 on the highway and
it comes with a 26 gallon fuel

special interior with carlike lay-
out but more spacious. You'll
find room for you to stretch your

read gauges. Plenty of storage
space in the new Sierra with full
console with super space just in
case you are the type that carry a

In the old days, trucks weren’t
very handsome looking at all but
these modern day trucks some-
times rival luxury touring sedans
is styling and simply good looks.
The Sierra Denali comes with a
specific chrome grille and addi-
tional chrome exterior appoint-
ments living up to its classic
name. Another thing that stands
out about the new Denali is the
fact the drive train and suspen-
sion features includes specially
tuned Z60 suspension, yes four
wheel disc brakes and locking
rear differential. There is even
an autotrac electronic transfer
case for AWD models.
The 143.5 inch wheel base
makes for a smooth ride and the
vehicle handles very well mak-
ing you feel like a cowboy on
his favorite horse.
When you start to think about
long trips, you would be happy
to know the vehicle has a145
amp alternator and this allows
you to add all the trailer hitches
power and other traveling acces-
sories that goes with the Rodeo
Cowboys. This baby even has
skid plates for those of you who
still like to play in the mud as
well.
Yes the Sierra has rear vision
camera and the seats are heated
as well as cooled for those hot
summer days.
The Sierra has an optional navi-
gation system with touch screen
with CD player and XM Nav
with first 3 months free. The
vehicle is accented by six inch
tubular chromed assist steps and
power sun roof and a gross vehi-
cle weight of 7,000 pounds.
As far as the makeup goes the
new Sierra had 67% of its parts
from the United States and
Canada while 29% comes from
Mexico and the final assemble
point is Silao, GL Mexico with
the engine also built in Mexico
while the transmission comes
from right here in the good old’
USA.
Good overall safety rating with
four-star over all highlighted by
five-star rating for both front
and rear seat occupants in side
crashes and four-star for driver
and front passenger in frontal
crashes and a foir-star in
rollovers rated by the NHTSA.

GENERAL MOTORS: TAMBERLIN GOLDEN
Our King-Size Mover and
Shaker for the month of January
is Ms. Cynthia Ford. As I inter-
viewed Ms. Ford this month, she
told me that above all else; she
is a “God fearing woman who
has been truly blessed and that
God gets all the glory”.
Currently, Ms. Ford is a leasing
administrator for the Fountains
Apartment on West Tidwell.
Over the years she has been
very instrumental in the leasing
and management of the
Fountains Apartments and its
real estate property. Her prior
experience includes working in
the field of education and a few
years in private industry.
However, when you ask Ms.
Ford where her true passion lies,
she will quickly tell you that she
LOVES working in the church.
At her church she wears many
hats, including the following:
administrative assistant to the
pastor, a talented member of the
choir, financial clerk, president
of the Vacation Bible School,
and assistant program director.
Ms. Ford stated that “she is the
mother of 5 beautiful children
and the grandmother of 5 of best
grand children in the world”.
I asked Ms. Ford what were her
plans for the future and she stat-
ed that “she is going to serve the
Lord for as long as she lives
and help as many people as she
can, for as long as she can”!
Ms. Ford is a dynamic person
and a true Mover and Shaker!!!
A KING-SIZE MOVER AND SHAKER: MS. CYNTHIA FORDBy Dr. Victor Keys

Mover and Shaker Ms. Cynthia FordTamberlin Golden
I travel a lot around Texas, both
for work and pleasure. Recently
my mind wandered to the name
of a couple of towns and I won-
dered how the names were cho-
sen. Houston, for example is
quite obvious. Originally
Allen’s Landing, it was renamed
to honor General Sam Houston
after he defeated General Santa
Anna at the Battle of San
Jacinto.
Dallas is less certain about the
origin of its name. When the
area was settled in the 1840’s
there were several people with
the surname of Dallas which
probably accounts for the name.
Very little other information is
available.
San Antonio was received its
name from a Portuguese
Catholic priest friar and of the
Franciscan Order. Saint
Anthony of Pauda died in 1231
and was the second fastest can-
onized saint in Catholic history.
El Paso is simply the Spanish
words for the passage. This
boarder town was long known as
a gateway across the Rio
Grande. Similarly, Laredo was
named after the town of Laredo,
Cantabria in Spain.
It is very interesting how some
of the smaller towns in our great
state received their names. Some
are obvious like Centerville,
which is almost halfway
between Dallas and Houston.
Baytown and Bay City were
named for their proximity to
their respective bodies of water.
Deer Park received its name
from the large herds of deer in
the area.
In the 1920’s the Griffing
Brothers Nursery contracted to
have several thousand pecan
trees planted in Far East Texas.
The area was named Pecan
Groves and was later changed to
just Groves. When the town
incorporated, it kept the name
Groves. Many of these trees and
their descendants stand today
producing those wonderful
Texas pecans.
Surprisingly, Orange, Texas was
not named after Orange produc-
tion. The town was originally
named Madison but the name
was changed to eliminate confu-
sion with Madisonville. Orange
was known for its 17 lumber
mills which processed lumber
from the Piney Woods of East
Texas.
Katy was named in honor of a
railroad. The Missouri, Kansas
and Texas Railroad laid tracks
through the area between
Houston and San Antonio. The
railroad used the initials MKT to
identify itself and officials nick-
named it the Katy Railroad. The
town adopted the name. (Side
note here. There is a building in
Galveston built in the early
1900’s by the MKT Railroad. It
is called the Katy Building and
was a depot.)
Pearland is another town named
after an agricultural product.
There were many varieties of
fruit grown in the area and the
name Pearland sort of evolved.
The hurricanes that devastated
Galveston in 1900 and 1915
destroyed most of the trees and
they were never replanted. The
name, however, stayed.
Humble was named after
Pleasant Smith Humble who
opened a post office in his home
and later became a Justice of the
Peace. He also operated a fruit
stand. In the early 20th century
oil was located in the area and
the town begat the Humble Oil
Company which is the beginning
of what is now the giant oil
company Exxon Mobil.
In the spring of 1895 a Quaker
named Frank Jacob Brown, who
had been an adventuresome buf-
falo hunter, and a Quaker named
Thomas Hadley Lewis, who was
a college educated man, felt
directed to this area of the Gulf
Coast to establish a community
dedicated to God. Starting
Quaker colonies was a common
practice of the religious sect
called Quakers or Friends, as
they were part of the westward
movement across the nation in
the middle to late 1800s. (The
terms Quaker and Friends are
synonymous and used inter-
changeably.) This is how
Friendswood received its name.
The Woodlands is a master
planned community established
by The Woodlands Corporation.
The word “The” is officially part
of the town’s name. (There are
just three cities in Texas that
have “The” in their name, The
Woodlands, The Colony and The
Grove.) It was developed in the
oil boom days of the 19700’s
making it a very new town by
Texas standards. The tract of
land where The Woodlands is
situated was previously occupied
by the Grogan-Cochran Lumber
Mill. The entire community was
planned to have a balance of res-
idential housing, retail develop-
ment and facilities such as con-
ference centers, hotels and
parks.
Sugarland was developed on
what once was the Oakland
Plantation, a huge sugar planta-
tion. It is the world headquarters
for Imperial Sugar and once
housed one of the largest cane
sugar refineries in the country.
Today, very little sugarcane is
grown in the United States and
in the late days on Imperial’s
production in Texas imported
sugar was refined here. The
Imperial Sugar crown logo is
seen over town and can even be
seen on the overpasses that run
through the area on US 59.
These are just a few of the
towns in Texas that have inter-
esting names and origins. When
you are traveling about give
some thought as to how the
town came to be. Texas is a very
diverse state. We have cities
named for agricultural products,
religious beliefs, railroads and
plantations. It once again shows
how creative Texans can be.
Happy travels!

HOW THE TOWNS GOT THEIR NAMESOut and About
with John Engel
A RAT
By John Engel
The other day I was drivingpast a school zone in the southend of town. A young mother ina nice SUV pulled out of theschool. On the mirror hung aplacard with a gold star and aname, presumably her child thatwas in the vehicle with her.
The young woman was yackingaway on her phone which isillegal in Texas. To make mat-ters worse, she was not wearinga seat belt. Her lovely youngdaughter, no more than eight, was sitting in the front seatbeside her. She also was NOTwearing a seat belt.
I believe in the right of peopleto choose, but the safety of herchild is another matter. Why inthis day would someone notcare enough about their off-spring to allow them to ride inthe front seat of a car with noseat belt in heavy traffic? In mycar, a child as small as herwould not activate the passen-ger air bags so she may betotally unprotected.
My late wife watched one ofher sons die in the car ahead ofher as the result of a head oncollision. This was in the 90’swhen seat belt use was notmandatory. He may have livedif he was properly belted in. Itdoes not matter if it is just ashort ride home or if it is incon-venient to put it on or whateverother excuse. Please buckle upthe kids before moving.

The Rosewood Tigers little
league football organization held
their 3rd annual banquet at
Forest Brook Junior High
School on Saturday 2/23/13 .
The Mark Anthony Wilkins
Pavilion had more than 250
inside as the team celebrated
their third year of competition
and their first Super Bowl cham-
pionship for their Varsity squad.
Team President Walter Penrice
Jr. was joined by his assistance
Alvina Reynolds V.P. and Carl
Shields A.D. and Secretary
Shewancia Batiste during the
celebration. “King these people
worked so hard to make this a
reality and we are so proud of
the work the parents, coaches
and kids did this year for our
teams". Penrice went to praise
Mary Brown for allowing them
to use space at their home to
store equipment and Traci
Johnson for her hard work in
decorating the tables and the
stage for their banquet. “ "Many
parents have called me this
morning thanking me for a first
class banquet King, but you
know how we do it; we want to
see to it that all our kids gradu-
ate high school and this is about
more than football as you
know”. Penrice who got his
start with the Studewood Cobras
truly loves his work and has a
full time job but always wants to
help out the community in
which he grew up. “King we
are taking an active role in these
kids’ lives because some of them
need it, so we stress academics
first and our kids are responding
to what we are trying to get
them to do both on and off the
field”. As we talked more with
Walter he wanted to thank
Cynthia Grant for helping him
get hooked up with the North
Forest School District. “She has
been another in a long line of
people who helped me out and
kept things going smoothly for
me and this organization”. In
closing Penrice added he feels
real good about their first three
years and is looking forward to
many more and he helps to
rebuild this community. “It’s
our goal for every kid in this
neighborhood to graduate high
school and go on to lead a pro-
ductive life”.
It’s been some five years since
Walter said he wanted strike out
on his own and now he is living
his dream and we are so happy
for him and we are willing to
help anyway we can to see to it
things continue to go well for
him!

Lakes to only six. “I felt we
had to make up for that and dur-
inghe fourth period we got it
going pretty good (20 points)”.
Stopping short of saying their
big game with Bellaire on
Friday night 2/22/13 took some-
thing out of them, but each of
the girls made it clear they felt
sort of sluggest going into the
game. “Not to make any excuses
but we felt we had a good
chance in the early going but
just didn’t get rolling until late
in the game”. Talking with her
teammates at the end of the
third period Ball told the girls
“Let’s go get this done” and
they did. The net result is a trip
to Austin for the state girls’
Class 5A tournament.

They say the third time is the
charm, that’s the case as the
Lady Chargers of Clear Springs
High School won the girls Class
5A Region III championship.
They beat a hard fighting Seven
Lakes team 55-44 with a 20
point explosion in the fourth
period to earn a trip to Austin
for the state tournament. Head
coach Pamela Crawford is no
stranger to winning basketball
played at Stephen F. Austin and
Louisiana Tech in her playing
days had her girls posed to win
the Region III title this time
around. “We worked so hard
since day one at this school and
to be standing here Region III
champs and going to state, it’s a
wonderful feeling”. Coach
Crawford went on to say she is
extremely proud of the young
ladies for their hard work they
put forth. “We changed our
game plan because we had too,
they were holding Brooke with
Christen (Inman) and her size
was brothering us so we made
the switch and Courtnie
(Latham) was able to get going”.
Defense was the key and every
time the Lady Chargers are in
their second game at the
Campbell Center they shoot
poorly. “I don’t know what it is,
but we turned to defense and
Ryshinique (Ball) woke up and
starting playing her game and
got us rolling”.
The coach went on to say her
team showed a little fatigue
from their showdown with
Houston Bellaire. “We make no
excuses but Bellaire is a great
team and it was a tough game
for us and I think we just kind
of got off to a slow start today,
but I’m proud of the way our
girls came out of it.
Crawford is assisted by John
Homik, Chris Hairfield and
Meagan McCutchen. The team
trainers are Mayra Reed and
Juan Longoria. The Principal at
Clear Springs is Gail Love and
Superintendent of Clear Creek
Schools is Dr. Greg Smith while
the Director of Athletics is Bill
Daws and his assistant is Debbie
Fuchs.

KAYLA WEST – TSU
The Lady Tigers came out with
an impressive win over
Arkansas-Pine Bluff on
Saturday, February 16, 2013. It
was a tough battle from the tip-
off to the end of the game. Both
teams had leads throughout the
game but, when the final sec-
onds ticked off the clock; it was
the TSU Lady Tigers who
walked away with the win (TSU
63 Arkansas-Pine Bluff 59).
Kayla West led the Lady Tigers
with 14 points in the win.
During the game, Coach Cooper
called several time-outs and dur-
ing one time-out she asked her
team “where is your pride”?
She also made some defensive
moves, which allowed the Lady
Tigers to regain their compo-
sure, defend better, and put
Arkansas-Pine Bluff away.
When I asked West, what were
the determining factors that
ensured the win for the Lady
Tigers, she responded “Coach
Cooper is a great basketball
coach, she expects us to give all
we have during a game and
today we left everything on the
floor. This was a great win for
us, I am so proud to be on this
team and to have Coach Cooper
as our coach”.
She added that “Arkansas-Pine
Bluff is a very good team, they
also fought hard and made a few
runs during the game but, we
tightened up our defense, got
several key turnovers and man-
aged to get the win”.
KAYLIN ROHER
CLEAR SPRINGS
Senior guard Kaylin Roher
scored eight of her teams 16
points but a sprained left ankle
hurt her movement in the second
half, but her team held on and
won the Class 5A Region III
championship. “Oh I hurt my
ankle a while back but I’ve been
playing on it and it will NOT
KEEP ME FROM PLAYING
ON FRIDAY AT THE STATE
CHAMPINSHIP TOURNA-
MENT’. Kaylin made light of
the injury as she had it wrapped
in an ice pack, but she was still
in good spirits. “When one of
us can’t score one of the other
girls picks up the slack and I
knew Courtnie would get us
going and she did”. Kaylin was
referring to Tulane signee
Courtnie Latham who scored
with two big treys to open the
fourth period. This happened
during an 8-0 run to seal the win
for the Lady Chargers over a
hard fighting Seven Lakes team.
“We came out sort of flat and
not to make excuses but we
played a very hard game against
Bellaire last night". Winning
80-65 over the Cardinals and
chasing A. J. Alix who had 38
points in the Lady Cards loss
had taken its toll on the
Chargers.
We certainly want to wish
Kaylin a speedy recovery
because her team is going to
need her outside shooting in the
state tournament!

PHILLIP WILLIAMS
B.C. ELMORE
This time around we have an
interesting guy from B.C.
Elmore Elementary School. He’s
the handsome lad Phillip
Williams who directed the
Rosewood Tigers past the
Studewood Cobras for the Super
Bowl Title this past December.
He said with the exception for
one B he made all Straight A on
his report card. In his spare time
he likes to collect things and
also play basketball. But when
we notice his leadership on the
football field you would think
this kid has a future in the sport.
However his goal in life is
become a better person day in
and day out. “I consider myself
a very well talented athlete but
there are some things I have to
work on in life to be a better all
around person. Williams added
The Light House Church has
been a big help in his develop-
ment. “Yes sir it has helped me
a great deal because I know the
preacher teaches us to under-
stand where we went wrong and
learn from our mistakes”.
The talented youngster is the son
of Barbara Phillips and Steve
Williams and is well respected
by his teammates and coaches.
When asked who is his most
driving force in life Phillip said
two people. First his Mom
Barbara and his Nanny (Fallon
Carlin) they made sure I get the
message when I make a mistake
because they will us football to
straighten me out. “If I do any-
thing I don’t get to play foot-
ball”.
On the subject of school changes
Phillip said students who break
the rules should be sent home so
they will know the seriousness
of their actions and the penalties
that comes with it.
First year QB Robert Griffin III
is his favorite football player in
the NFL and Phillip explained.
“You see he is just a rookie but I
like the way he took over the
team and gathered the support of
the veteran players”. He added
that’s the kind of leader he
hopes to become.
When asked what he thought
about Barack Obama becoming
the first African American
President of the United States he
smiled and said; “I like it
because it shows Black people
are somebody and it makes oth-
ers want to work harder to reach
their goals in life.
In closing Williams added win-
ning the Super Bowl over the
Studewood Cobras was a great
thing and he hopes they repeat
as Champs in 2013.
JAIDEN ANDERSON
KEY MIDDLE SCHOOL
As we doubled up this edition
we also have another outstand-
ing honor role student from Key
Middle school. Jaiden is the
mild-mannered handsome son of
Wynnsheka and John Anderson
and is in the 7th grade at Key.
The all around player had some
big games and he also played
both side of the ball and a true
joy for the coaches to work with.
In his spare time he plays in the
band at B.C. Elmore and can
strike a good beat with the
drums as well as make some
good sounds with trombone.
The talented youngster admits
he would like to play profession-
al sports but also has a feel for
electrical engineering as a way
to make a living as an adult. “I
don’t want to be just good I
want to go beyond the call of
duty and get better at whatever it
is I’m involved with”.
Considering his mother as his
most driving force in life Jaiden
says she has always pushed him
to be the best. “She stays on me
and makes sure I get my class
work done and without a doubt
it clear she is in charge.
Arian Foster of the Houston
Texans is Jaiden favorite NFL
player and he says the guy just
works hard and does what needs
to help his team win. “You can
count on him to play hard game
after and he has gotten better
and better as long as he had
been in the NFL now that’s what
who I want to be like”.
We moved on to talk with Jaiden
about school changes if they
made his Principal at Key mid-
dle school. “To be honest with
you our school is ran rather effi-
cient and I don’t think I would
change a thing”.
Barack Obama becoming the
first African American President
is in Jaiden mind is a great
thing. “He is the first and now
blacks feel it can happen again
and this also opens the door for
women to hold the office as
well”.
On Sundays you’ll find the
Anderson family over at Power
House church and Jaiden credit-
ed the church with helping him
build character.”Yes sir I’d say
the church has been a positive
influence in my life”.
We couldn’t help but ask what’s
it like to beat the Studewood
Cobras for the Super bowl title.
“It was awesome, because they
beat us the first time and we
beat them the second time and
then again in the Super Bowl for
the title.

When the game is on the line
you go to your best player right?
That was the case as Courtnie
Latham scored the first eight
points of the fourth period and
13 of her 21 points to lead Clear
Springs to the Region III Class
5A girls title. The senior who
has signed to attend Tulane this
fall hit two treys then drove to
the hoop and was fouled and
made both free throws. “Yes sir
I’d say it help rebuild my confi-
dence and plus our team needed
to get going after we trailed (35-
33) at the end of the third peri-
od”. The talented 5’11” player
went on to say they got off to a
slow start but rallied early in the
fourth period to seal the win.
“Really basketball is a game of
runs and we made the key last
run”.
The win sends the Lady
Chargers to the state tournament
for the first time in school’s his-
tory. It also marks the first time
a Clear Creek school has gone to
state since Clear Creek went in
1994. Latham scored a bucket
to give the Chargers a 49-41
lead with less than two minutes
left in the contest. “We played a
tough game last night (Bellaire)
and we got off to a slow start
today, but our team hung in
there and now we are going to
state”.
Getting a team leading 10
rebounds and dishing out four
assist in addition to her team
leading 21 points Latham and
her teammates are headed to
Austin.
Taking a 38-2 mark to the state
tournament Clear Springs will
face tough competition in
defending state champion
Ducanville but we feel they are
ready for it!

Bastrop, Louisiana-Born Charles
Ellis Winston, in the tiny village
of Mer Rouge, Louisiana on
August 23, 1947 to share crop-
per Francis Winston, more than
65 years later Charlie as we
called him passed away quietly
at Select Specialty Hospital in
Houston on February 7, 2013.
Walking nearly one mile to St.
Matthews Elementary School,
Charlie was an outstanding stu-
dent with one of the best hand
writing skills in the school. Fact
is he wrote poetry and even sent
songs to Music City Song
Crafters but never had the funds
to get them published.
Chopping cotton in the summer
and picking cotton in the fall,
Charlie went about his way lis-
tening to a transistor radio and
kept in touch with what was
going on in the song writing
industry.
While at St. Matthews Charlie
was baptized at Little Jerusalem
Missionary Baptist Church then
under the leadership of the Rev.
F. H. Richardson.
The family moved to Bastrop in
October of 1965 and three years
later Charlie graduated from
Morehouse High School. For
the first year or so he took on
odds jobs and even went to
Florida to pick fruit for nearly a
year.
In 1968 Charlie moved to
Houston and thanks to Bobby
Rhodes he was given a job at
Allright Parking. There he
worked alongside Bastrop
natives Bobby and Carlton
Rhodes for more than 33 years.
Winning several awards and
being voted the Attendant of the
Year on five occasions.
After his parking days Winston
went to work for Securitas as a
security guard and held that spot
until his passing.
Five years after moving to
Houston, Charlie was visiting
back home when his brother
John (Preacher) Prather intro-
duced him to the lovely Vilene
Herron of Oak Ridge, Louisiana.
The couple married in December
of 1973 and three children were
born, Deatrice (Dee Dee)
Winston, Eboni Winston-Watley
and Charles (Maine) Winston Jr.
adding to Cedric Herron giving
them four loving children they
cared for over the years. They
also have three grand children
Brianna Winston, D’Andria
Winston and Kayla Watley.
Known for helping others
throughout his life Charlie
would allow family members to
move in with him and Vilene
until they could find work and
get on their feet. The list goes
on and on and it includes me
and several others who all got
our start in Houston because of
Charlie’s generosity. If there
ever was a guy who would give
you the shirt off their back it
was Charlie.
Finding ways to help keep his
family going Charlie became
one of the largest distributors of
Dyna Glaze-Aero Shield auto
polish and did detail jobs over
the weekends.
Building friendships over the
years Charlie had two that stood
out Thomas Walker and John.
When diabetes began to get the
best of him it was those two
who were always around him.
Fact is when he entered the
Methodist Hospital in Katy on
January 10th Thomas and John
were there. For two and one
half weeks before being moved
to Select Specialty Hospital
where he spent his last week and
a half, John Dry was there with
him all for the entire month. For
those two guys were there night
and day when Charlie needed
them. The Winston family will
be forever grateful to them for
standing by a friend in need.

The homegoing service was
really special as we had people
together for the first time in a
much as 45 years. Thanks to
our niece Carolyn Harris we
were able to use New Mt. Olive
MBC in Bastrop. It was wonder-
ful to see my mother-in-law Ms.
Thelma Atkins and long time
friend Larry “Teddy” Perry in
the crowd and offering words of
encouragements.
Sister Eunice Hawkins guided us
through the program and Rev.
Bernard Jones read the Old and
New Testament. Our first
cousin Rev Freddie L. Smith did
the prayer. Then to a surprise to
some soul and blues Legend
Ernie Johnson sang “Reaching
Out” from his newly released
gospel CD “This Is My Prayer”.
It was a voice that Rev. Freddie
Smith hadn’t heard for 45 years.
Rose Hawkins-Robinson woke
up the crowd with her renditions
of “Walk around Heaven” and “I
Won’t Complain”.
Then Carolyn Harris spoke on
her uncle for a minute. We want
to thank her for all she did in the
preparations for the services.
Up and coming pastor Rev.
Johnny Green did another mar-
velous job of delivering a ser-
mon that hit so close to home
for those who loved Charlie.
Green is the grandson of the late
Eva Mae Green who just hap-
pened to have been the best
friend of the late Francis
Winston-Prather.
The Winston Family wants to
thank all who helped in any kind
of way during these difficult
days and those who sent flowers
and cards also. Frank Reese Jr.
probably said it best when he
said “Charlie was a good man”.
In closing please allow me to
add many thanks the Doctors
and Nurses at the Methodist
Hospital in Katy and to the doc-
tors and nurses at Select
Specialty Hospital in Houston.
Furthermore we want to thank
Frazier-Mitchell Funeral Home
in Houston and Tennant Funeral
Home in Bastrop for their pro-
fessional services. Thanks to
them we will be able to remem-
ber our loved one in a happy
way.

In one of the most exciting girls’
basketball games we’ve seen in
a while the Lady Chargers of
Clear Springs rolled to a 55-44
win over Katy Seven Lakes.
The win sends Clear Springs to
a Friday showdown against
Duncanville the defending state
Class 5A champs at 3:00 PM at
the Frank Erwin Center on the
campus of the University of
Texas. If they win that game
they will face the winner of
Cibolo Steele and Pflugerville
for the title on Saturday night at
8:30 PM. Tailing 35 to 30 late
in the third, Texas signee Brooke
McCary got free for a trey to
close to within 35-33 at the peri-
od’s end. Then senior Courtnie
Latham hit two treys and two
free throws for an 8-0 run and
just like that the Lady Chargers
were on top for good. Brooke
talked about how they got off to
a slow start. “We have several
girls who can score points so
when we started slow we knew
someone would step up and this
time it was Courtnie”.
The game started off slow as
both teams finished with 16
points in the first period. The
second period slowed all the
way down as Clear Springs
scored only eight points and
Seven Lakes netted only six
points. Keep in mind this was
the Lady Spartans first trip to
the regional finals but senior
Christen Inman had 25 points
and 10 boards to lead her team
while teammate Sydney Buchel
added 12 points and nine boards
in the loss. The third period is
when Inman got going and they
took a lead at 35-30. But the trey
by Brooke and the two treys by
Courtnie were just too much to
overcome and the results were
clear. The big 20 points to nine
points edge in scoring clearly
determined the outcome.
In Class 4A Region III action
Georgetown beat Lamar
Consolidated 47-29 and then
Tomball to win the title 41-30
and heads to Austin.

Is the Observance of Easter,by the Church or anyone else, authorized by God throughJesus Christ and his Apostles?
We ask this question because, those of us that proclaim to beChristians, have been given acommandment by the words ofthe apostles of our Lord andSavour Jesus Christ; “1Thes5:21 Prove all things; hold fastthat which is good.” But first, bear with us as we be scriptural-ly reminded of the order ofthings, if you will, “The Chainof Command” in the belief ofGOD. Jesus DEFINES those thatare and those that are NOT ofGod, please read; “John 8:47He that is of God hearethGod’s words: ye therefore hearthem not, because ye are not ofGod.” God made it clear in HisWord, that we MUST hear JesusChrist His beloved son, and inverse 8, him ONLY; “Matt.17:4Then answered Peter, and saidunto Jesus, Lord, it is good forus to be here: if thou wilt, let usmake here three tabernacles;one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While heyet spake, behold, a bright cloudovershadowed them: and beholda voice out of the cloud, whichsaid, This is my beloved Son,in whom I am well pleased;hear ye him. 6 And when thedisciples heard it, they fell ontheir face, and were sore afraid.7And Jesus came and touchedthem, and said, Arise, and be notafraid. 8 And when they had lift-ed up their eyes, they saw noman, save Jesus only.” John12:48 He that rejecteth me, andreceiveth not my words, hathone that judgeth him: the wordthat I have spoken, the sameshall judge him in the last day.49 For I have not spoken ofmyself; but the Father whichsent me, he gave me a com-mandment, what I should say,and what I should speak.
Jesus, the only one that God hascommanded us to hear, tells ushow we must believe on him;“John 17:17 Sanctify themthrough thy truth: thy word istruth.18 As thou hast sent meinto the world, even so have Ialso sent them into the world.19And for their sakes I sanctifymyself, that they also might besanctified through the truth.20either pray I for these alone, but for them also which shallbelieve on me through theirword; 21 That they all may beone; as thou, Father, art in me,and I in thee, that they also maybe one in us: that the world maybelieve that thou hast sent me.”
We must believe on Christ onlyin the manner he has stated, through his Apostle’s word, sim-ply because he said so; being thehead of every man; “1 Cor 11:1Be ye followers of me, even as Ialso am of Christ. 2 Now Ipraise you, brethren, that yeremember me in all things, andkeep the ordinances, as I deliv-ered them to you. 3 But I wouldhave you know, that the headof every man is Christ; and thehead of the woman is the man;and the head of Christ is God.”
Before Jesus ascended back intoheaven, he left instructions withhis apostles; “Matt 28:16 Thenthe eleven disciples went awayinto Galilee, into a mountainwhere Jesus had appointed them.17 And when they saw him, theyworshipped him: but somedoubted. 18 And Jesus cameand spake unto them, saying,All power is given unto me inheaven and in earth. 19 Go yetherefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name ofthe Father, and of the Son, andof the Holy Ghost: 20 Teachingthem to observe all thingswhatsoever I have commandedyou: and, lo, I am with youalway, even unto the end of theworld. Amen.” These instruc-tions are for the one church thatJesus is building; “Matt 16:16And Simon Peter answered andsaid, Thou art the Christ, theSon of the living God. 17 AndJesus answered and said untohim, Blessed art thou, SimonBarjona: for flesh and bloodhath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heav-en. 18 And I say also unto thee,That thou art Peter, and uponthis rock I will build mychurch; and the gates of hellshall not prevail against it.”Upon what rock; Christ for he isthe Head of the church? “Eph1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, anddominion, and every name thatis named, not only in this world, but also in that which is tocome: 22 And hath put all thingsunder his feet, and gave him tobe the head over all things tothe church, 23 Which is hisbody, the fulness of him that fil-leth all in all.”(See Eph. 4:14-16, 5:23-24)
Jesus gave instructions to hisApostles, the ones that God gavehim, on how to run HIS church,as they were guided by TheHoly Ghost. No one else wasgiven this authority. Rememberhe told them in verses 16 thru18 of Matt. 28th chapter, thatall power had been given him,by his Father in heaven and inearth. Jesus also told them inverses 19&20 to go and teach
all nations, and to baptize. Healso made it clear by whatnames baptism was to be doneand what things they were toteach to be observed, and thosewere the things Jesus had com-manded them. There were alsothings that he had yet to tell hisapostles, after ascending backinto heaven. According to scrip-ture this was to be done by TheHoly Ghost “The Comforter”,The Spirit of Truth, please read;“John 16:7 Nevertheless I tellyou the truth; It is expedient foryou that I go away: for if I gonot away, the Comforter will notcome unto you; but if I depart, Iwill send him unto you. 8 Andwhen he is come, he willreprove the world of sin, and ofrighteousness, and of judgment:9 Of sin, because they believenot on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, andye see me no more; 11 Of judg-ment, because the prince of thisworld is judged. 12 I have yetmany things to say unto you, butye cannot bear them now. 13Howbeit when he, the Spirit oftruth, is come, he will guideyou into all truth: for he shallnot speak of himself; but what-soever he shall hear, that shall hespeak: and he will shew youthings to come. 14 He shall glo-rify me: for he shall receive ofmine, and shall shew it untoyou. 15 All things that theFather hath are mine: thereforesaid I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
How then MUST we believe andhear Jesus? According to Jesus,it is NOT through some voicethat comes to us, but ratherthrough his APOSTLES wordsas THEY were guided by TheHoly Ghost; the things that areWRITTEN. Please read; “John17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.17 Sanctify them through thytruth: thy word is truth. 18 Asthou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent theminto the world. 19 And for theirsakes I sanctify myself, that theyalso might be sanctified throughthe truth. 20 Neither pray I forthese alone, but for them alsowhich shall believe on methrough their word; 21 Thatthey all may be one; as thou,Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:that the world may believe thatthou hast sent me.“Eph 3:1 Forthis cause I Paul, the prisoner ofJesus Christ for you Gentiles, 2If ye have heard of the dispensa-tion of the grace of God whichis given me to you-ward: 3 Howthat by revelation he madeknown unto me the mystery; (asI wrote afore in few words, 4Whereby, when ye read, ye
may understand my knowl-edge in the mystery of Christ)5 Which in other ages was notmade known unto the sons ofmen, as it is now revealed untohis holy apostles and prophetsby the Spirit;”. “I Jn 4:5 Theyare of the world: therefore speakthey of the world, and the worldheareth them.6 We are of God:he that knoweth God hearethus; he that is not of Godheareth not us. Hereby knowwe the spirit of truth, and thespirit of error.”
We MUST remember theChurch by Christ (see Eph.3:20-21), the one he is building, andis the Head of, has been com-manded not to follow traditionsand commandments of men (seeMatt. 15:8-10; Col.2:8-12; 18-23; Titus1:13-14), but to followthe traditions and command-ments of the apostles which isfound in New Testament scrip-ture (Acts 2:41-42; 1Cor.11:1-2; Philp.4:9; 2Thes.2:13-15;3:6). It is true; Jesus and hisApostles did observed thePassover, before his death. Jesuswas born under the Law(seeGal.4:4), and so was hisApostles. After his cruel deathon the cross; the NewTestament, which was in hisblood (see1Cor.11:25), and afterHis resurrection, we find noscriptural evidence of himobserving such. Neither do wefind any instructions in the apos-tles’ doctrine and or word, forthe Church that Christ is build-ing, (Acts 2:47) to observe such.We believe that we are SAFEand COMPLETE ONLY inChrist Jesus, NOT in Moses,Elias or anyone else, note whatthe apostle Paul admonished theChurch in Colosse to do; “Col2:5 For though I be absent inthe flesh, yet am I with you inthe spirit, joying and beholdingyour order, and the stedfastnessof your faith in Christ. 6 As yehave therefore received ChristJesus the Lord, so walk ye inhim: 7 Rooted and built up inhim, and stablished in the faith,as ye have been taught, abound-ing therein with thanksgiving. 8Beware lest any man spoil youthrough philosophy and vaindeceit, after the tradition ofmen, after the rudiments of theworld, and not after Christ. 9For in him dwelleth all the ful-ness of the Godhead bodily. 10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all princi-pality and power: 11 In whomalso ye are circumcised with thecircumcision made withouthands, in putting off the body ofthe sins of the flesh by the cir-cumcision of Christ: 12 Buriedwith him in baptism, whereinalso ye are risen with him
through the faith of the opera-tion of God, who hath raisedhim from the dead.”
Remember Christ left the apos-tles and only them instructions,and or commands on the thingsthat ARE to be OBSERVED (seeMatt.28:16-20), by the Churchthat he is the head of ; “Col 1:12Giving thanks unto the Father,which hath made us meet to bepartakers of the inheritance ofthe saints in light: 13 Who hathdelivered us from the power ofdarkness, and hath translated usinto the kingdom of his dearSon: 14 In whom we haveredemption through his blood,even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisi-ble God, the firstborn of everycreature: 16 For by him were allthings created, that are in heav-en, and that are in earth, visibleand invisible, whether they bethrones, or dominions, or princi-palities, or powers: all thingswere created by him, and forhim: 17 And he is before allthings, and by him all thingsconsist. 18 And he is the headof the body, the church: who isthe beginning, the firstborn fromthe dead; that in all things hemight have the (1)preeminence.19 For it pleased the Father thatin him should all fulness dwell;
Definition: (1)preeminence-4409 proteuo (prote-yoo’-o);from 4413; to be first, to holdthe first place (in rank or influ-ence): KJV— have the preemi-nence.
We must also remember thatJesus Christ, the only begottenof God was and is perfect, andso is The Holy Spirit. They didnot forget anything, so that evenbefore the deaths of all theapostles, there were offices putin place for the overseeing of theChurch by Christ, the one thathe is building (see Matt.16:16-18; Acts20:16-17, 26-31,Philp.1:1; 1Tim.3:1-12; 5:17;Titus1:5-11; Heb.13:17-18).They, as well as all those thatprofesses to be Christians, mustfollow the traditions and com-mandments of the apostles asthey were guided by the HolySpirit, until The Chief Shepherdshall appear; “1 Pet 5:1 Theelders which are among you Iexhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferingsof Christ, and also a partaker ofthe glory that shall be revealed:2 Feed the flock of God which isamong you, taking the oversightthereof, not by constraint, butwillingly; (1)not for filthylucre, but of a ready mind; 3Neither as being lords overGod’s heritage, but being ensam-ples to the flock.

I hope we are clear on the orderof things (chain of command)according to New Testamentscripture. Now let us begin toanswer the question; “Is theObservance of Easter, by theChurch or anyone else,authorized by God throughJesus Christ and hisApostles?” Let us start with thetwo origins and there traditions.Now let us by scripture, proveEaster #1. Easter, which meansPassover, was given by Mosesfrom God to be OBSERVED bythe children of Israel accordingto the law. It was never given tothe Church by Christ, to beobserved by Christians accord-ing to the Apostle’s doctrine andor word. Christ is the end of theLaw (see John 1:17, Rom.10:1-5). Notice the difference inthe two Easters, the first one wecan find scripture for the cus-toms, traditions and sacrificesthat was set in place. Again thiswas given to Moses by God, forthe Israelites and for a specificreason. The preparation of thefoods that they were to partakeof was specified by God throughMoses, Please read;

of the day on which theirfathers, preparing to depart fromEgypt, were bidden by God toslay and eat a lamb, and tosprinkle their door posts with itsblood, that the destroying angel, seeing the blood, might passover their dwellings; the paschalfeast, the feast of the Passover, extending from the 14th to the20th day of the month Nisan:KJV— Easter, Passover.
Exod 12:1 And the LORDspake unto Moses and Aaronin the land of Egypt, saying, 2This month shall be unto you thebeginning of months: it shall bethe first month of the year toyou. 3 Speak ye unto all thecongregation of Israel, saying,In the tenth day of this monththey shall take to them everyman a lamb, according to thehouse of their fathers, a lamb foran house: 4 And if the house-hold be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour nextunto his house take it accordingto the number of the souls; everyman according to his eating shallmake your count for the lamb. 5Your lamb shall be withoutblemish, a male of the first year:ye shall take it out from thesheep, or from the goats: 6 Andye shall keep it up until the four-teenth day of the same month:and the whole assembly of thecongregation of Israel shall killit in the evening. 7 And theyshall take of the blood, andstrike it on the two side postsand on the upper door post ofthe houses, wherein they shalleat it. 8 And they shall eat theflesh in that night, roast withfire, and unleavened bread; andwith bitter herbs they shall eat it.9 Eat not of it raw, nor soddenat all with water, but roast withfire; his head with his legs, andwith the (1)purtenance thereof.10 And ye shall let nothing of itremain until the morning; andthat which remaineth of it untilthe morning ye shall burn withfire. 11 And thus shall ye eat it;with your loins girded, yourshoes on your feet, and yourstaff in your hand; and ye shalleat it in haste: it is the LORD’spassover. 12 For I will passthrough the land of Egypt thisnight, and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt, bothman and beast; and against allthe gods of Egypt I will executejudgment: I am the LORD. 13And the blood shall be to youfor a token upon the houseswhere ye are: and when I see theblood, I will pass over you, andthe plague shall not be upon youto destroy you, when I smite theland of Egypt. 14 And this dayshall be unto you for a memo-rial; and ye shall keep it a feastto the LORD throughout your
generations; ye shall keep it afeast by an ordinance for ever.15 Seven days shall ye eatunleavened bread; even the firstday ye shall put away leaven outof your houses: for whosoevereateth leavened bread from thefirst day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off fromIsrael.

The first Easter “Passover” wasauthorized by God throughMoses, to Israel and is of thetruth. The instructions of obser-vance and the dates were set, byGod, and it was much earlierthan A.D. 325. If Christians areunder the Old Law “The Law ofMoses”, which we are notaccording to the apostle’s doc-trine, then all of the instructionsof observance including theSACRIFICES and the datesgiven, must be followed circum-spect, to be right “righteous”with God. There were no fables, nor Greek gods or goddesses, init. We must remember ChristiansMUST follow Christ through hisApostles, not Moses. Christ isthe end of the Law (see John1:17, Rom. 10:1-5). Now let usby scripture disprove Easter #2.
EASTER“Bill Petro, your friendly neigh-borhood historianwww.billpetro.com/holidayhisto-ry”
“The most joyous of Christianfestivals, and one of the firstcelebrated by the Christians, commemorates the resurrectionof Jesus Christ, on the firstSunday after the full moon fol-lowing the vernal equinox. TheEnglish word “Easter” corre-sponding to the German “Oster”,reveals the association of manyEaster customs with those ofthe Teutonic tribes of centralEurope. When Christianityreached these people it incorpo-rated many of their heathenrites into the great Christianfeast day. Easter month, corre-sponding to our April, was dedi-cated to Eostre, or Ostara, goddess of the spring. Therewas in common the time ofspring and the triumph of lifeover death. The practice of eat-ing eggs on Easter Sunday andgiving them as gifts to friendsand children probably arosebecause, in the earlier days ofthe church, eggs were forbidden
food during Lent (the 40 daysbefore Easter) and were there-fore always eaten on EasterSunday. But the custom of col-oring eggs goes back to theancient Egyptians andPersians, who practiced thiscustom during their spring festi-val.
The Easter hare, or bunny, comes from antiquity as well. The hare is associated with themoon in the legends of ancientEgypt. It belongs to the nightwhen it comes out to feed. It isborn with its eyes opened and, like the moon, is “the open-eyedwatcher of the skies”. Throughthe fact that the Egyptian wordfor hare, “un”, means also“open” and “period”, the harebecame associated with the ideaof periodicity, both lunar andhuman, and so became a symbolof fertility and of the renewal oflife. As such, the hare becamelinked with the Easter, orpaschal, eggs. In the U.S. theEaster rabbit is fabled to laythe eggs in the nests preparedfor it or to hide them for thechildren to find.
Although Easter was celebratedvery early in the church, its datewas not established until A.D.325 when Constantine convenedthe council at Nicea, where itwas decided that it should beobserved on the first Sundayafter the full moon following thevernal equinox, to be fixed eachyear at Alexandria, then the cen-ter of astronomical science. Thedate is an approximation, andmay vary. This means that itsdate may vary as much as 35days!”Bill Petro, your friendly neigh-borhood historianwww.billpetro.com/holidayhisto-ry
The second Easter has beendisproved simply because, notone scripture was given for theinstructions and dates of obser-vance. Not one of the traditionalobservance given, matched anyof the ones given by God. It isalso stated that “Easter” is aChristian festival, ACCORDINGTO SCRIPTURE this isERROR, which is FALSEDOCTRIE! We must remem-ber “Christian” and“Christianity” are not just words, but are lifestyles! Using theapostle’s doctrine as a reference,as the Church of and by Christhas been commanded to do,Christian and Christianity arethe two MOST misused wordson earth. Christians MUST fol-low Christ through his Apostle’sword (John17:20-23). The truthis, the only Easter/ Passoverauthorized by God was given by
God through Moses, to the chil-dren of Israel “those under theOld Law”. The second one wasgiven to man by man in A.D.325 MUCH too late to be ofGod or Christ for that matter, and it has not one custom or tra-dition given by God, Christ orhis Apostles; thereby it is not ofthe truth. It’s full of customsand traditions of men; men suchas “heathens and Greek goddess-es”. It also consists of Fables, which are lies; such as egg lay-ing rabbits. Not only does rab-bits lay eggs according to the liethat children are told, but theylay hard-boiled, colored ones. This lie is passed on from gener-ation to generation. Childrenshould be taught the truthbecause the scriptures teach thatall liars will have their part, seeRev.21:8. We all may fall shortand lie at some point in ourlives, but to practice, to observeand to look forward to lying, makes us LIARS.
The scriptures teach that Jesus’resurrection was early on thefirst day of the week, at the endof the Sabbath, OT on EasterSunday or Christian Sabbath.“Mark 16:1 And when thesabbath was past, MaryMagdalene, and Mary the moth-er of James, and Salome, hadbought sweet spices, that theymight come and anoint him. 2And very early in the morningthe first day of the week, theycame unto the sepulchre at therising of the sun.” “Mark 16:9Now when Jesus was risen earlythe first day of the week, heappeared first to MaryMagdalene, out of whom he hadcast seven devils.” (seeMatt.28:1; Luke24:1) ChristianSabbath, according to scriptureis a contradiction, in that accord-ing to the apostles’ doctrine thedisciples, which were calledChristians, came together on thefirst day of the week, “Acts11:26 And when he had foundhim, he brought him untoAntioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assem-bled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And thedisciples were called Christiansfirst in Antioch.” “Acts 20:6And we sailed away fromPhilippi after the days ofunleavened bread, and cameunto them to Troas in five days;where we abode seven days. 7And upon the first day of theweek, when the disciples cametogether to (1)break bread, Paulpreached unto them, ready todepart on the morrow; and con-tinued his speech until mid-night.”….Definition: (1)breakbread 2806 klao-to break usedin the New Testament of thebreaking of bread (communion).

Now let us set by NewTestament Scriptures the founda-tion of belief. But first let uslook at the only place the word“Easter” is found in the bibleand it’s of Aramaic origin; itwas used to define the feast ofthe Passover. According to Acts12:1-4, these Jews were not ofthe body, the Church thatChrist was building (Col.1:18-20; Matt.16:17-18), because it
pleased them that king Herodstretched forth his hand to vexcertain of the Church. The scrip-tures then go on to name thoseof the Church that King Herodvexed, killing James, the brotherof John with the sword, and put-ting Peter in prison.
Acts 12:1 Now about that timeHerod the king stretched forthhis hands to vex certain of thechurch. 2 And he killed Jamesthe brother of John with thesword. 3 And because he saw itpleased the Jews, he proceededfurther to take Peter also. (Thenwere the days of unleavenedbread.) 4 And when he hadapprehended him, he put him inprison, and delivered him to fourquaternions of soldiers to keephim; intending after Easter tobring him forth to the people(KJV)
We must remember All FLESHincluding GENERATIONS endsin Christ; we are neither Jew norGreek in Christ, according toscripture we MUST becomeNEW SPIRITUAL creatures,Please read;

2 Cor 5:16 Wherefore hence-forth know we no man after theflesh: yea, though we haveknown Christ after the flesh, yetnow henceforth know we him nomore. 17 Therefore if any manbe in Christ, he is a new crea-ture: old things are passed away;behold, all things are becomenew.(KJV)
Gal 3:27 For as many of you ashave been baptized into Christhave put on Christ. 28 There isneither Jew nor Greek, there isneither bond nor free, there isneither male nor female: for yeare all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if ye be Christ’s, then areye Abraham’s seed, and heirsaccording to the promise.

spirit of your mind; 24 And thatye put on the new man, whichafter God is created in righteous-ness and true holiness. (KJV)

All must believe on Christthrough the apostle’s word, andafter baptism must continuesteadfastly in the Apostle’s doc-trine. This doctrine is found onlyin New Testament scriptures.Those Jews that believedaccording to Christ were his dis-ciples and those that did not,were not of him, Please read;
John 8:31 Then said Jesus tothose Jews which believed onhim, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make youfree. (KJV)
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladlyreceived his word were baptized:and the same day there wereadded unto them about threethousand souls. 42 And theycontinued stedfastly in the apos-tles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and inprayers. see also verses 36-41
Acts 14:1 And it came to passin Iconium, that they went bothtogether into the synagogue ofthe Jews, and so spake, that agreat multitude both of the Jewsand also of the Greeks believed.2 But the unbelieving Jewsstirred up the Gentiles, and madetheir minds evil affected againstthe brethren.(KJV)
Gal 6:15 For in Christ Jesusneither circumcision availethany thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. 16 And asmany as walk according to thisrule, peace be on them, andmercy, and upon the Israel ofGod. (KJV)

We have been looking but, wehave not been able to find in theApostle’s word, Lent, PalmSunday, Good Friday or evenEaster Sunday, which againwould be a CONTRADICTION
and CONFUSION(1 Cor14:33), thereby making themtraditions of men. According toscripture, true followers ofChrist “Christians” cannot,MUST not, be followers of tra-ditions and customs, not author-ized by Christ through hisApostles. Because if we are, then there is a command givenby the apostles, for such ones, please read; II Th 3:3 But theLord is faithful, who shall stab-lish you, and keep you fromevil. 4 And we have confidencein the Lord touching you, that yeboth do and will do the thingswhich we command you. 5And the Lord direct your heartsinto the love of God, and intothe patient waiting for Christ. 6ow we command you, brethren, in the name of ourLord Jesus Christ, that (1)yewithdraw yourselves fromevery brother that (2)walkethdisorderly, and not after the tra-dition which he received of us.

We were able to find Easter“Passover”, not as the Churchobserving it, but the Jews, before being converted to Christ. There is no need for Jews oranyone else to observeEaster/Passover any more.Remember Christ is the end ofthe Law and there is neither Jewnor Greek in Christ Jesus (seeJohn 1:17, Rom.10:1-5). Wemust not frustrate the Grace ofGod, by observing the things ofthe law (seeGal.2:14-21, 3:1-5).We are all one in Christ, if allhear and obey the law of God’sonly begotten Son(seeJames1:22, Rom.3:27,Gal.6:2), to be right with Himaccording to scriptures, pleaseread.

3 For they being ignorant ofGod’s righteousness, and goingabout to establish their ownrighteousness, have not submit-ted themselves unto the right-eousness of God. 4 For Christis the end of the law for right-eousness to every one thatbelieveth. 5 For Moses descri-beth the righteousness which isof the law, That the man whichdoeth those things shall live bythem.(KJV)
Gal 2:20 I am crucified withChrist: nevertheless I live; yetnot I, but Christ liveth in me:and the life which I now live inthe flesh I live by the faith of theSon of God, who loved me, andgave himself for me. 21 I do notfrustrate the grace of God: forif righteousness come by thelaw, then Christ is dead invain.(KJV)
Those that has been baptizedinto the one Body which is theone Church by the one LordJesus Christ, must know andbelieve according to scripture, there is only one Holy Fatherand He is not on earth John17:11-13. The belief and obedi-ence of Eph 4:4-5 would makeall have the one Spirit of the oneFaith striving to be followers ofChrist “Christians”, after the oneBaptism.
Eph 4:4 There is one body, andone Spirit, even as ye are calledin one hope of your calling;5 One Lord, one faith, onebaptism,(KJV)
Col 1:18 And he is the head ofthe body, the church: who isthe beginning, the firstborn fromthe dead; that in all things hemight have the preeminence.19For it pleased the Father that inhim should all fulness dwell; 20And, having made peace through
the blood of his cross, by him toreconcile all things unto himself;by him, I say, whether they bethings in earth, or things inheaven.
John 17:11 And now I am nomore in the world, but these arein the world, and I come tothee. Holy Father, keep throughthine own name those whomthou hast given me, that theymay be one, as we are.(KJV)
1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God,and (1)one mediator betweenGod and men, the man ChristJesus; Definition: (1)onemediator-3316 mesites (mes-ee’-tace);from 3319; a go-between, i.e. (simply) an inter-nunciator, or (by implication) areconciler (intercessor): KJV—mediator.1) one who intervenesbetween two, either in order tomake or restore peace andfriendship, or to form a compact,or for ratifying a covenant 2) amedium of communication, aarbitrator
We hope it is scripturally clearon the One Mediator betweenGod and man. There is no oneelse that man can appeal to as amedium of communication, or tomake or restore peace andfriendship, but Christ, Christ,Christ, Christ, Christ. If there isa mediator, between man andChrist, then that would be twomediators between God andman. According to God, Christand his Apostles, there is onlyONE MEDIATOR. If anythingelse is taught, it is not of thetruth and is false Doctrine!
Now to answer the question thatwas asked at the start of thisstudy. “Is The Observance ofEaster, by the Church or anyoneelse, authorized by God (the oneand only Holy Father which is
in heaven, through Jesus Christ),the one and only mediatorbetween God and man and HisApostles?” The SCRIPTURALanswer is, ABSOLUTELYOT! If anything else is taught,it is not of the truth and is falseDoctrine! Dear reader, remem-ber the purpose of these articlesis to seek the TRUTH accordingto THE WORD, thereby expos-ing ERROR, which is false doc-trine, for the purpose of savingour souls. We believe this isbest done by definitions and thePREPONDERANCE OFSCRIPTURES; which is havingsuperior weight, force, impor-tance, or influence of SCRIP-TURE. Again we believe thisallows SCRIPTURE to INTER-PRET SCRIPTURE, therebyallowing a better understandingon that topic. Thanks again for
your interest in the WORD ofTRUTH; GRACE and SALVA-TION; John 17:17-21; Acts20:29-32; James1:21-25. Afterall it is our MAP to HEAVEN,and away from HELL!
2 Cor 13:5 (1)Examine your-selves, whether ye be in thefaith; prove your own selves.Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be (2)reprobates? 6But I trust that ye shall knowthat we are not reprobates.(KJV)
Definitions: (1)Examine your-selves-3985 peirazo (pi-rad’-zo); from 3984; to test (objec-tively), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize,discipline: KJV— assay, exam-ine, go about, prove. (2)repro-bates-96 adokimos (ad-ok’-ee-mos); unapproved, i.e.
rejected; by implication, worth-less (literally or morally):KJV— castaway, reprobate.
2 Tim 3:13 But evil men andseducers shall wax worse andworse, deceiving, and beingdeceived. 14 But continue thouin the things which thou hastlearned and hast been assured of,knowing of whom thou hastlearned them; 15 And that froma child thou hast known theholy scriptures, which are ableto make thee wise unto salva-tion through faith which is inChrist Jesus. 16 All scriptureis given by inspiration of God,and is profitable for doctrine, forreproof, for correction, forinstruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may beperfect, throughly furnishedunto all good works. PRECIOUS is Time. Therefore while you have
time, use it to learn and do Gods Commandments
for at the end of life is pay time and your pay will
be according as your work has been. You will find
in 2 Corinthians 5:10 the following: “For we must
all appear before the judgement seat of Christ,
that everyone may recive the things done in his
body according to that he hath done, whether it
be good or evil.” You will find in John 15:14. “Ye
are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command
you.” Solomon said in Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man
will hear and will increase learning, and a man of
understanding will attain unto wise counsel.”

Everyone thinks that only in the
New Year, that its out with the
old and in with the new or that
spring cleaning can only be done
in the “spring time”. One should
always take inventory of things
in their life, of what’s working
and what’s not and at that point
start cleaning house.
Spring cleaning can start with
things that are familiar such as
cleaning out closets, drawers,
your car etc. Have a garage sale
with a group of friends; donate
old clothes to friends in need
and organizations that assist peo-
ple. Find creative ways to store
things and recommit to being
organized.
When it comes to mental “spring
cleaning”, that can be something
that often goes cluttered year
after year.
For example, often relationships
can be the most challenging task
to de-clutter.
Don’t be afraid to let people go!
Most people think their biggest
threat to us is losing their friend-
ship. Once we banish that fear it
takes away the only power they
had.
Let people walk away only to
see them saunter
back realizing what an awesome
person they are missing out on,
lose the fear of losing people or
things.
Analyze why a relationship did-
n’t work out and quickly move
on from it. It’s often said the
best revenge is looking and liv-
ing good so, go ahead take that
negative energy and turn it into a
positive, run an extra mile,
dance an extra 15 minutes, then
watch the results come shining
through.
Don’t be held hostage by emo-
tions the quicker you can forgive
and move on, the quicker you
can get back to what’s most
important and that’s being in the
moment and enjoying.
Holding on to what doesn’t fit,
or makes you happy does not
allow your good to come in. By
letting go of the old, worn and
the unproductive you are allow-
ing and making space for the
“new” to come into your life.
So, go ahead throw out those old
shoes, delete phone numbers you
haven’t called in years, and get
ready for the universe to respond
lovingly, and in return it will
give you all the things you’ve
dreamed of and more!

As I entered the M. O. Campbell
Center in the Aldine
Independent School District to
attend the Region II 5A and 4A
Girls Basketball tournament, I
noticed the same sight I’ve
observed for the last twelve-
where were the fans? I kid you
not dear readers; where were the
fans? They were not outside the
arena, nor was there a big crowd
on the freeways going north to
get to the site. Yes there was the
annual rodeo parade for
Saturday 2/’22/13, but that was
completed by noon. There was
plenty of time for fans to load
everyone up in the car, SUV or
truck to make the trip to
Campbell to support these young
athletes. But sadly few did.
I have thought about this issue
for years bit never sat down at
my computer to type a column
about it. This time I had to
because it is painful and an out-
right shame of all of us. These
young ladies work hard, very
hard to play sports. They are not
only competing against each
other but sadly a mindset that
should be out of our minds years
ago.
There seems to a dead idea that
still hangs on that women should
not play sports. Yes I know that
sounds stupid to print this but
yes there are many of us walk-
ing around muttering this idiotic
thought. Some of us won’t sup-
port young women playing
sports even if we are related to
them. I watched talented athletic
young ladies play their hearts
out to have the chance to
advance to Austin Texas to play
for a state championship. Many
have worked for this moment for
years. They just want the sup-
port of family and close friends
to enjoy this special moment. I
sat there in the arena and
watched the joy of League City
Clear Springs celebrating their
2013 Region III basketball title;
they won it and had a blast
doing so. It’s just an outright
shame that they did it with so
few fans in the arena. Katy
Seven Lakes High School, Clear
Springs’ opponent, wasn’t any
better regarding fan attendance. I
understand that we all have a ton
of things to do in 48 hour week-
end. Families are loaded with
children activities, errands and
sometimes (we know ‘some-
times’ always means ‘most
times’) activities that just wears
everyone out and then Sunday is
upon us and it’s time for the 40
hour grind beginning Monday
all over again. I get that. But
can’t we squeeze in a couple of
hours for these young ladies; our
daughters, nieces, cousins and
friends? Don’t we understand
that those little girls sitting in
the stands with those big eyes
are watching those young ladies
on the court and thinking to
themselves that soon very soon
when they reach their teenage
years they too can play basket-
ball? Can we just think of them
sometime?
No I guess not, because the
attendance will continue to be
small and we will always ques-
tion as to why. We have people
wasting gas and attempting to
crash phony alleged stars and
‘their’ parties just to gossip
about who was there at the
event, what they were wearing
and more importantly who they
were seen with. The more times
change, the more things never
seem to change. That’s just the
way I see it!

As the Southwestern Athletic
Conference regular season
comes to a close, the Lady
Tigers of Texas Southern
University are right at the top.
Under the leader ship of first
year coach Cynthia Cooper-
Dyke the Lady Tigers are rolling
right along. It is clearly a case
of good quality coaching
because they are basically the
same team from a year ago.
Kayla West leads the team and
these women have come from
behind to win games all season
long. Plus when they face a
weaker team, they put them
away early Cooper a four-time
WNBA Champ knows the game
very well and has a way of get-
ting the best out of her players.
This is clearly the best thing that
happened to the Lady Tigers
program in many years.
On the other side of the ledger
the Men’s program is doing the
same thing under first year
coach Mike Davis and pretty
much with the same team.
However due to NCAA viola-
tions the Tigers will not be able
the go to the tournament, but
they will certainly be back next
season and look for great things
from Coach Davis and his staff.
