Converting prognosticated resources to crude reserves and bringing them to
production through intensive exploration and innovative production system will always be the first priority for the Indian hydrocarbon upstream sector.
Deep and ultradeep water combined are becoming the most predominant source of new oil and gas discoveries. However, India does face technological challenges for developing these discoveries.
While there are ample opportunities in the hydrocarbon sector, it also associates
different challenges in terms of technology, knowledge, policies, governance and timelines. From nearly 2 national oil companies engaged in oil and gas exploration in post-independence era, today we have more than 70 E&P companies and about 10 coal bed methane companies operating in India.
Mr S K SrIvaStava Director General, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH)
Along with the need to be energy efficient and to secure imported supply to meet the
energy deficit, it is imperative to meet domestic supply. We have no alternative but to ensure that the Indian hydrocarbon basins are well exploited quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly and discoveries are developed timely to produce these resources.
Mr. SaShI MuKundanRegion President and Head of Country, India, BP Group Companies
Today the whole purpose of developing hydrocarbons is to ensure very reliable
and affordable supply of energy. We have to enlarge the base of energy from hydrocarbons to others. The distinction between various minerals is totally abolished and all of them are seen as sources of energy.
Mr. t n r raoFormer Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Govt. of India
Only about 10 per cent of the world’s deepwater oil and gas fields have been
extensively explored and drilled. Last year saw several new deepwater oil discoveries. This will continue to be the major area of focus to meet India’s energy needs and evolving technologies will help overcome the challenges.
Mr. K venKataraMananCEO & Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro Ltd.
OceanTEX World Expo 2012 has been based on the theme Synergistic

Theme: Synergistic Development of Indian Hydrocarbon OpportunitesEnergy consumption in India has nearly tripled over the past 20 years and as we
move forward, it is expected to double over the next 20 years. India is the 4th
largest consumer of oil & primary energy and 12th largest consumer of gas. It
is an energy deficient country and for a foreseeable future, it will continue to
be increasingly dependent on imports of oil and gas to meet our ever-increasing
demand in energy.
Experts discussed various critical issues concerning the offshore industry, such
as addressing the challenges of deep-water field developments, deep-water
subsea installation, safety of environment and boosting brownfield recovery in
onshore/offshore. They also emphasized on exploring new hydrocarbon portfolio
options and installation of large offshore structures and subsea pipelines.
With increasing challenges in metallurgy, structures, piping & valve technologies the only
way to achieve cost effective, technically viable and operational friendly field development is through cooperation amongst SPS manufacturers, installation contractors and oil companies from early phases of field development.
Mr. ShrIKant KanItKar Deputy Chief Engineer-Subsea, Aker Powergas Subsea Pvt Ltd
Since the onset of NELP regime there has been a surge in deep water activity and over 80 licenses
have been issued. However the numbers of wells drilled so far are lower than the committed numbers.
Mr. S. raMaMurthyGeneral Manager Mumbai, Schlumberger
Mr. rIchard d’SouzaVice President - Granherne Global Operations
The high capital costs, substantial risks and uncertainty inherent in developing deepwater fields
require a phased and structured development planning process. The process of selecting a field development plan involves a complex and iterative interplay between three key elements: subsurface characterization; drilling and completions; surface facilities.
Mr. SanJaya SoodManaging Director (IME), Transocean
In 2011, number of deepwater fields globally grew to 5.5 million barrels, or 6 per cent of global production. By 2020,
deepwater oil will account for 9 per cent, according to IHS CERA. Only about 10 per cent of the world’s deepwater oil and gas fields have been extensively explored and drilled.

Refining and PetrochemicalsInternational Exhibition & Conferences 2012
Theme: Refining and Petrochemicals – Emerging TrendsRecent trends in the refining sector highlight key focus on reducing carbon footprint and integrating refineries with petrochemicals. In the recent past, 80 per cent of the refinery margins have gone down. To add more value, it’s important to have an appropriate product mix basket for refineries and enhance the scale of commercialisation of catalysts. Experts threw light on emerging and technology trends of the refinery industry along with the issues related to integrating petrochemicals with refinery and safety and environment.
The need of the hour is to build ‘Lube Refineries’ wherein lubricants play a pivotal role in contributing
to the refinery margins. Coal-gasification of biomass is another mode that will help address the environmental challenges faced by the industry.
dr. r.K. MalhotraDirector (R&D), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd
Identifying the low value streams in the refining industry and upgrading it instead of disposing it
off as a by-product is another way of enhancing the GRM. Identifying and removing the bottlenecks in the plant, small capital expenditure and payback analysis are some of the ways to increase further refinery capacity.
