“The need of the hour for the offshore industry is to develop deep and ultradeep water technologies”, revealed Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva, Chairman & MD, ONGC, while addressing a huge audience of stalwarts from the offshore and refining industry during the inauguration of the OceanTEX 2012 on 8th February 2012. The inaugural function was a grand success that witnessed the participation of major Indian and international players from the offshore and refining industries. Based on the theme Synergistic Development of Indian Hydrocarbon Opportunities, the session focused on the problems and challenges India was facing on the offshore front and how can they be addressed, thereby opening up doors for innovation and newer technologies.

Apart from Mr. Vasudeva, major industrial chieftains such as Mr. S K Srivastava, Director General, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, Mr. Sashi Mukundan, Region President and Head of Country, India, BP Group of Companies and Mr. TNR Rao, Former Secretary, Govt. of India, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, spearheaded the four-day event voicing out the main concerns regarding the offshore industry.

Converting prognosticated resources to crude reserves and bringing them to

production through intensive exploration and innovative production system will always be the first priority for the Indian hydrocarbon upstream sector.

Deep and ultradeep water combined are becoming the most predominant source of new oil and gas discoveries. However, India does face technological challenges for developing these discoveries.

While there are ample opportunities in the hydrocarbon sector, it also associates

different challenges in terms of technology, knowledge, policies, governance and timelines. From nearly 2 national oil companies engaged in oil and gas exploration in post-independence era, today we have more than 70 E&P companies and about 10 coal bed methane companies operating in India.

Along with the need to be energy efficient and to secure imported supply to meet the

Theme: Synergistic Development of Indian Hydrocarbon OpportunitesEnergy consumption in India has nearly tripled over the past 20 years and as we

move forward, it is expected to double over the next 20 years. India is the 4th

largest consumer of oil & primary energy and 12th largest consumer of gas. It

is an energy deficient country and for a foreseeable future, it will continue to

be increasingly dependent on imports of oil and gas to meet our ever-increasing

demand in energy.

Experts discussed various critical issues concerning the offshore industry, such

as addressing the challenges of deep-water field developments, deep-water

subsea installation, safety of environment and boosting brownfield recovery in

onshore/offshore. They also emphasized on exploring new hydrocarbon portfolio

options and installation of large offshore structures and subsea pipelines.

World oil prices will continue to remain high till 2030, while the LNG prices

would remain suppressed. Over 1,600 tcf of gas reserves have been developed and over 2,000 tcf of undeveloped gas reserves are still remaining. Russian, Qatari & Iranian reserves represent the largest gas fields.

OffshOre and energy cOnference & technOlgy expOsitiOn

India is one of the largest growing economies of the world and the energy needs are going to be enormous. Keeping this in view, it becomes imperative for our country to prioritize its actions for the energy security of the nation. Ranging from exploration, production, refining, marketing including subsidy burden- the entire

gamut of oil and gas industry needs a huge investment as energy, especially oil & gas, is closely linked to the growth of our economy.

Addressing various technological and sustainable challenges of the oil and gas sector, the four-day event of OceanTEX 2012 showcased latest products, machinery and equipments for the oil and gas industry, which received tremendous response from the users. The event witnessed the presence of around 73 exhibitors from around 15 countries worldwide.

India has 5th largest electricity generation capacity and 3rd largest transmission and distribution network. Scope of investments in the power sector over the next few years will be above USD 300 billion. Large demand supply gap, renovation and modernization of old thermal and hydro power plants, large untapped hydro power potential and increasing

privatization and distribution networks will drive the growth of power sector in the country.

Focusing on various technological and sustainable issues in the energy sector, the four-day event of EnerTECH 2012 showcased latest products, machinery and equipments for the energy and power industry, which received tremendous response from the users. The event witnessed the presence of around 28 exhibitors from around 15 countries worldwide.
