CORSA Chapter #891
January, 2020
Prez Sez,
Wow, let's hope we all survived the holidaze. Did
Santa bring some parts to any (good) Corvairs out
there? Thank goodness for the supply companies
still in business!
Well, it is indeed a new year. Let's see, our compact buzz bombs are a year older (good),
but their insurance is higher (bad). Most replacement parts are still available (good), but
prices keep climbing (bad). Happy new year. Hey, it could be a Hell of a lot worse!
Maybe it is??? Hold up there. I'm rewriting this January column from Dec. 5th. to
Thursday, the 12th. I have to share some grave concerns and don't wish to jot them down
tomorrow, FRIDAY THE 13th!
Here goes. Whilst driving to the meeting yesterday, I came within a few millimeters of a
crash THREE TIMES! Three separate times. That's totally unacceptable. When I arrived
at the IHOP I was truly shaken. This can't go on. Has our Los Angeles style traffic caused
a drop in meeting attendance? Are there some among you who really don't want (can't?)
to drive at night? Commuting time traffic has evolved beyond intimidating in the Las
Vegas valley.
I believe that the location for our monthly gatherings is not as relevant as to the time of
day and day of the week when we gather. Numerous car clubs meet on Sundays. I now
firmly believe that a change to a Sunday schedule will enable this club to survive. Folks, we
only had thirteen people at the Christmas party! Thirteen. And that number included our
three newest members plus my son Jason.
We have to consider some alternative. A Sunday noontime meet up would always mean
daytime driving. Most church services are offered at varying times. Most of our fulltime
workers are off on Sundays. But mainly, the odds of becoming a statistic on I-15, C.C.215,
and/or I-95 are reduced by probably 3,000%! Okay, back to the remainder of my column.
I'm looking forward to the Laps For Charity on January 26th out at
the speedway. I've signed up 25 participants (mostly High Rollers). Our start times are
9:00am and 9:15am for two groups of 12; one group medium speed, and other slower.
Very few people can say that they've driven on a NASCAR race track. Keep this fact in
mind. If you drive around that 1 1/2 mile course at say, 85 mph, understand that the Cup
cars go 100 mph faster!! Sorry dude, but you'd be lapped in a hurry.

Keep in mind that most Vegas Vairs officer positions are open for a changeover in March
of 2020. Nominations and decisions must be finalized by the February meeting. Since I've
(also) been serving as activities coordinator since 2008, I would REALLY like someone else
to take over reviewing the goings on in the valley. Pullleeezzze.
Once again the Sons and Daughters of Erin will sponsor the St. Patrick's Day Parade
down Water Street in neighboring Henderson, Nevada on March 14th, 2020. This event as
proven to be pure fun for participants in the past. We can hook up in the parade with the
High Rollers and join their pizza party afterwards. We have to decide during the January
meeting if this is a go since I have to send a check as soon as possible to have our entry
secured. The cost is still $50.00.
Just a quick reminder that the biggest car show in our area will take place again over the
MLK weekend in January in Mesquite, Nevada. You can participate, or be a spectator.
Either way over 800 classics join Nevadans on average from five neighboring states. And it
ain't beastly hot up there at this time of year. Oh my, so many cars - so little time? No,
plenty of time!
Remember, Porsches are merely high priced Corvairs!

DECEMBER MEETING MINUTES December 11, 2019
In attendance: Harry Ransom, Jason Ransom, Kevin Shambarger, Stephen Hendricks, Mike Wade, John Bussard, Marty Katz, Bertha Katz Bill and Phyllis LeFever, JR “Baby” Johnson, and Jack Wicks and Fusae Wicks. Meeting called to order at 7:12PM. I discussed disappointment in the Christmas turnout. Is the traffic a real turnoff? Should we meet on Sundays? The white elephant exchange was as funny as always. Three raffled items raised $25.00 for the club treasury. Officially adjourned at 8:05PM.

Hello, My name is Jim Pennell. I'm the president of Central Coast Corsa. As I’m sure you know by now, the 2020 CORSA Convention will be held in San Diego. Well, Central Coast Corsa has volunteered to run the registration table. We have a number of our members who have stepped up and volunteered to put in some hours working registration. In order to not have a few people working the vast bulk of the time and not being able to participate in the convention, we are trying to find others to help. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. So, this message is a shout out for help. Can you please get the word to your membership that if they are planning on attending this rare California CORSA Convention, this first since 1999 (technically Lake Tahoe), would they consider volunteering some time staffing the reg. table. Any time would be greatly appreciated. If anyone in your chapter expresses interest, kindly give them my contact info so that we can link-up. Thank you very much, Jim 805-474-1316 almajim@att.net

We could, well, I guess actually I
could, just change the name of this column
to “All about Me” based on the past couple
of months. There’s a teensy part of me that
thinks I should perhaps apologize for that,
but the wiser part of me acknowledges that
I want to share joy! I’m sincerely not
trying to bore you.
Mary, Steve and I had a PERFECT
birthday visit! We didn’t do anything
extraordinary but we had a blast! Mary
finally got to Ethel M’s, we enjoyed fresh
falling snow at Sam’s Town, played the
board game Clue, (Too much backstory for
here…see disclaimer in bold!) worked out
together, did a chorus line, learned why we
were never allowed to be in the same
class—excessive giggling, and so much
more!
CAUTION: PLAY CLUE WITH MY
SISTER AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
She is downright diabolical!
And lest Vixen feel forgotten, Mary
remembered to ask about Vixen’s new
interior, was enthusiastically excited about
all the “glitter” and then went on to
convince us to bundle up and go on a
“topless” ride where she sat in the back and
now will forever be the first person to use a
seat belt in Vixen’s rear seat! Steve just
put them in for me when we did the interior
earlier this year.
Above: It was hard to
say goodbye after a
PERFCT visit!
Right: Mary finally
gets to sit in Steve’s 67
Chevy II!

We woke to a
beautiful lemon cake
before celebrating
with family photos!
Love this pic of our “Awesome Threesome”
I received the following email in case anyone is interested:
I live here in Vegas and want to build a Corvair engine for aviation use. I’ve
located one but it has the transmission which I won’t be needing. What are the
chances of someone needing a transmission that might be willing to give me a
couple $100 for it? I won’t be needing all the engine parts so there would be some
other parts I could just pass on to someone that could use them.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Happy Holidays!
