Vincent van Gogh

1853 – 1890

Van Gogh loved art from an early age.

• Vincent

age 13

He did not begin painting until his late twenties.

•  In 1885, he painted his first major work The Potato Eaters.

He moved to Paris and discovered the Impressionists. His work grew brighter in

color.

Vincent developed a unique and highly

recognizable style.

The Yellow House, 1888

• Van Gogh painted many of his famous paintings here to “decorate” his walls.

Bedroom in Arles, 1888

• He made several sketches for the painting he simply titled, The Bedroom.

• There are at least 3 different but similar paintings.

Van Gogh sent sketches to his brother Theo.

Each one is different.

How are these 2 alike? How are these 2 different?

Vincent had a unique way of seeing everyday objects. Here, Vincent has painted a chair from his room.

Here, Vincent has painted a chair from his artist friend Paul Gaugin’s chair.

How are they alike?

How are they different?

Cafe Terrace at Night , 1888

• This café was close to the yellow house.

The Night Café, 1888

Starry Night Over the Rhone, 1888, was also painted at the yellow house.

Still Life: Vase with Twelve Sunflowers,1888

Vincent’s sunflowers are some of his most famous paintings.

The artist Paul Gaugin came to live and paint with Vincent in the little yellow house.

• This is a painting of Vincent painting sunflowers, painted by his friend Paul Gaugin in 1888.

Vincent and Paul did not get along.

One day they had a huge quarrel that ended in Vincent

cutting off the lower part of his ear in frustration and

anger.

In some of his self-portraits you can even see his bandaged ear.

Vincent created dozens of self-

portraits.

Van Gogh's self-portraits

show his face as it appeared in

the mirror.

After his argument with Gaugin, Van Gogh was taken to a mental hospital to recover.

• He was given a room at the hospital to use as his painting studio.

• The Sower, 1888

Some paintings from this time show swirls of color, like The Starry Night , one of his most

famous.

• Vincent painted one of his doctors.

• Portrait of Dr. Gachet, 1890

While in the hospital he painted the gardens around him.

Wheat Field with Crows, is one of his last paintings. Its sad, haunting, feeling often causes

people to believe it was his last painting.

Vincent Van Gogh suffered from severe

mental illness his entire life. On July 27, 1890,at age 37 he took

his own life. This is his last self-

portrait that he gave as

a gift to his mother.

His brother Theo was so upset

losing his brother, he died only 6 months later.

They are buried side by side.

Vincent died almost unknown. By the mid 20th century he was

seen as one of the greatest painters in

history!

Van Gogh's paintings are the world's most expensive paintings ever sold. Several have

sold for over $100 million!
