WELCOMING REMARKS• Welcome to the Northwestern Division.
• We cover 12 States; 1st and 2nd largest river systems in the US: Missouri and Columbia Rivers (1 million mi2 drainage).
•Two regional offices; and 5 districts. Major programs: environmental projects, military operations, and water resources.
• Dams are operated for flood control, power, fish, navigation, recreation, irrigation, water quality, and others.
• 29 major hydropower plants on Columbia, Snake, and Missouri rivers. Total installed capacity of 15,568 MW – 76% of Corps total. Annual power generation: 75 million MWh.
• 82 flood control projects (22 on Columbia, 53 on Missouri). 115 Maf of flood storage (141 km3).
• Inland waterways: 992 mi (Columbia), 735 mi (Missouri). 10 locks (8 on Columbia/Snake).
COLUMBIA RIVER VISITOR PROGRAM• One and ½ day briefing on water management and related subjects. One ½ day visit to typical Lower Columbia River run-of-the-river project -- Bonneville Dam.
• Speakers from Corps, Bonneville Power Administration, National Weather Service, and Port of Portland.
• We have a few water management lessons learned to share:
Columbia River comparable to the Zambezi River (1, 950 km vs. Zambezi’s 2,740 km)
International (there are pluses and minuses)
We have had flooding problems (rain/snow –not tropical cyclones)
Projects operated for flood control, power, fish, navigation and other purposes. Many challenging issues.
