Principals Report
Challenging Learning Process
Our school's Quality Teaching and Learning Team have been busy focussing on implementing strategies
to enhance the learning of our student body at UPS. We have, and continue to, develop strategies in
Focus On Reading and we will also be taking part in the Challenging Learning Process. The Challenging
Learning Process is contextualised to our school based on a range of information and selection of
evidence based strategies. It focusses on developing and delivering learning that has high impact on
student learning and building the capacity of all of our staff. Our staff will begin to select themes that
are proven to make differences across schools - we will be looking at feedback and challenge, growth
mindsets, language of learning and student process. This is an exciting time for our school and we look
forward to sharing and reporting on our progress as a school and to provide opportunities to share with
our parents and community. An overview of the process can be found here:

Moderated Writing
We are in the infancy of implementing Moderated Writing across all classrooms in our school but
already we are experiencing many incidents of success. Word has began to spread about the process we
are using to track the progress of our children and we continue to invite parents to ask about the
learning progress of their children. It is hoped that we continue to implement practices that best
demonstrate learning progress to all of our students and is easily understood by all parents.
Uncle Fred Carriage
Our school community was shocked to hear of the passing of Uncle Fred Carriage late last week. Uncle
Fred was certainly a huge advocate and partner for Aboriginal Education and he supported our school
and student's in many ways. Uncle Fred touched us all with his speeches and Welcome to Country at our
assemblies and he was able to share and develop in us all a deeper connection to the local areas on
which we live and gather. We valued his knowledge and his kind hearted gestures and continual
willingness to support our school. Uncle Fred's funeral will be held at the Civic Centre this Wednesday
with many staff members attending. Arrangements for supervision will be made to allow staff to attend.
We thank you for your understanding in this time of mourning, remembering and celebrating the life of
Uncle Fred.
Athon
Last Friday we hosted our successful obstacle course-athon. This is our major fundraiser for the year and
all students were able to participate despite the weather trying to ruin parts of the day. It was fantastic
to see our students all enjoying themselves and we must thank our teachers and parent volunteers who
helped on the day. A huge thank you must go to Mr Horvat for organising the day.
Have a great week,
Trent Burns

UPS Snowboarders through to Nationals
The UPS Div 4 Snowboarding team of Matilda B. (5/6C) and Summer B. (6G) recently travelled to Thredbo to represent UPS at the NSW State Interschool Snowboarding Championships.
Matilda and Summer comfortably qualified through to the National Championships in Snowboard X in
4th place in what was a technically challenging snowboarder-cross course, with some difficult drop offs,
berms and jumps. This is a huge achievement given only the top 6 teams in the State progress through to the National Championships.
Summer also competed individually in the Snowboard GS event. While Summer did not qualify through
to the next stage in this event, she gained some valuable mountain experience in her first GS
competition at the Thredbo resort GS course.
Matilda and Summer now progress through to the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships which will be held in Perisher on 5th September.
1 - Matilda B.
2 - Summer B.
School Play
Tickets are now on sale for the Ulladulla Public School production of "Cinderella, Cellar Dwellar", written and directed by Mr Kevin Richards.
The performance is on Thursday 27 September at 7pm in the school hall.
Tickets are $2 per child, $5 per adult or $10 family.
Stage 2 Social
Stage 2 will be enjoying their annual social dance on Monday 17th September in the school hall. This
year the theme will be “Australiana” and students are encouraged to dress up for the day. Each student
is asked to bring $1 for a drink and snack. Prizes will be given to students who are having fun participating in the dances and who demonstrate lovely manners.
UPS Visits the Town Library
During Book Week this term, a number of classes from kindergarten to year 6 visited the Town Library.
The students had a great time listening to a story, creating a pirate ship and finding out their pirate name!
Forest Feral Membership
Forest Ferals, along with parents and teachers, make up Ulladulla Public School’s Environmental Council.
All students from Years K- 6 enrolled at our school are members of the ‘Forest Ferals’.
All members participate in our competitions, activities, events and excursions etc. as well as voting for future Student Environmental Councillors the SEC at the end of the year (Years 3-6 only).
Students don’t have to purchase a badge to become a member but ‘Forest Ferals’ can purchase a badge,
worn on their hat, as a sign of their commitment to the ‘Ferals’. Money raised goes towards the cost of
the badge and maintaining our environmental programs.
The cost is $3.00.
If you wish to purchase a badge a note has been sent home with the eldest child in the family.
Expression of Interest to Enrol in Kindergarten 2019
Parents/carers seeking to enrol their child in Kindergarten at Ulladulla Public School for 2019 are being
asked to complete an Expression of Interest form. Enrolment is open to children who turn 5 years of age on or before 31 July 2019.
An Expression of Interest form can be downloaded from the school website here, or copies are available
